IMPREZIV
05-29-2001, 09:29 PM
Well about a month and a half ago when I bought my rex, I called the DMV and tried to order a new custom plate. My plans were to go from IMPREZIV to WRXTACY. Since the registration had not yet transfered onto the new car I had to wait, and wait I did, rather impatiently. So today was the day I took my place in phone line to speak to the custom plate division of the New York State DMV. After almost two hours of *****ty hold music, I got a real live person on the phone and told her I am ready for my new plate. One look at what I had on hold and she says "Please hold"......When she gets back on the phone I get this "Sorry sir, but we can not allow that plate in NY. There is too much of a problem currently with the drug called extacy to allow anyone to have that written on their plate." But Miss, I reply, extacy us a frame of mind, a place of comfort and pure happiness, not just a drug. "NOPE, SORRY. Think of something better and call us back... BYE!"
Now I have one more good reason to hate the DMV.
So... any good plate suggestions?!
-Pete

Heh, that reminds me of a story I read about the DMV rejecting a man's application for COKE DLR as a plate. He had to send them a picture of his vehicle before they would ok it... it turned out to be a Coca Cola delivery truck. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

So I have to post this one:

I was out on Sun. night and went to the local hang out to look at the cars and there was a lonely S-2000 off in the distance. I go over to look at it and it had a personal plate: I still cant get over this! It was:

heh
DMV is retarded
i was going to get techpmp as a joke, and they said I couldn't have it because it had the sequence CHP (cali highway patrol) in it, and they wouldn't allow me to impersonate an officer http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

never mind the fact that my dad was using my car for undercover arson investigations, so it had state installed strobes, red lights behind the grill, and a siren.......

The funniest custom plate that I have ever seen said "EXPIRED"

That one really cracked me up.

Now, if I could just fit "Legalize UPDOC" on a license plate.

Then there is the theory that sometimes it is better to have a license plate that is hard for witnesses to remember.

How about 1ST AMNDMNT... I know it won't fit. But that kind of censorship is crap.

How did she know it was ecstasy in the name? Did you pronounce it? Otherwise, you could have said, "I am shocked and apalled you would say that about my grandmother's, mother's, and father's initials. This is a family thing!!!

I can understand limits on plates. Most states don't allow any sort of obscenities. But this just seems like going too far. Did you ask to speak to a superior? Sounds to me like someone just made a judgement call, because I seriously doubt they have any written guidelines about the use of the word ecstacy (or any creative spellings thereof). That said, I think that your state licensing department pretty much has total discretionary power over what they allow or disallow.

the only problem with this is that driving isn't a right. So, yes, the DMV can make pretty much any judgment call they want when it comes to plates.

it sux, but that's life.

I hear a lot of people claim that driving is priviledge, and not a right. If this is true, then the DMV has the power to arbitratily yank your license, for no reason whatsoever. Also court cases have been decided on both sides of the issues. So legally the debate hasn't been settled. While driving hasn't been legally protected like the first and second amendmants, I'm not so quick to call it a priviledge. Granted you need to recieve some form of training to learn to drive. But we recieve training in speach at school, and I believe that the way the second amendmant is written means that some form of training should be recieved. We have the right to move about this country as we like. I'm still not convinced either way yet wether driving is a right or a priviledge.. but I'm leaning more towards a right. And I certainly think that since the DMV is a public owned entity, that censorship would not pass the constitutional test. If it were a private entity, then it could do what it wanted. If the DMV is allowed to censor in this manner, then where is the line drawn? Legally, it's a nightmare. Ok enough rambling http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

How 'bout "WRXTATC"? or "WRXLNT" or "WRXLR8" or "WRXTREM" or "HOMWRXR"

In California there are symbols available, (hand, heart, etc.) as well as numbers and letters. That being said, the Best plate I've seen, "Heart image"2BLKD.

She told the DMV it meant "Love to be liked"

Saw a bit on TV about the DMV. Sombody asked for a licensplate that read "FUQUARI", the DMV thought it was innappropriate, but the driver insisted it was a name of a Florida Indian tribe.

So they issued the plates.

Next thing the DMV knows, they are getting complaints about someone driving around with a custom license plate frame, that reads "Where the". Care to guess where the fuquari went to?

The DMV promptly recalled the plates.

Recently one the states turned down the plate IRISH because it might be offensive to some. Never mind that the owner of the car was Irish. From the Fox News Channel.
