Pipercub: I PM'd recently, but never got a response...

(sorry to pull thread OT)

What were you pulling the weights for? Any noticeable differences? I also second the notion for the lightweight bumper beams, if you are looking to shed some real weight.

Carbon Fiber Hood. Hmm, rip out the back seat. Remove all the soundproofing as well.

youd be surpised, but those back seats are somewhat hefty. they are basically foam, but thats a good place to start when your rippin' out interior.

Did you put yourself on a diet too? There are several infomercials claiming incredible weight savings!! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

j/k, of course...

What fix a flat did you get? Are there any that work for 17" tires?

Hey there!

I am in the process of building a cage in a '96 coupe for a customer.

I have removed 30lbs of sound deadening material alone. Everything inside is gone except for the dash shell...there is a lot of weight that can be removed if you have the time/patience.

and by the way, the interior pieces are for sale, including air bags...

How did you go about removing the material? It seems pretty well glued in. Is there a trick to it? I would be interested in removing the stuff in the trunk and under the rear seat.

I peeled off the fake carbon dash pieces and removed the center rear seat belt. It's a start.

I tried several methods and only one works good enough for me to not get TOTALLY BORED of sound deadening material removal.

First I used a heat gun to soften the material and then pull it up slowly...didn't work!

Then I used a putty knife and tried to scrap it off...didn't work!

The best and only solution in my opinion is to cool the material down (with ice or leave the car outside in 25 deg weather for several hours...) and go like mad with a good sharp chisel! The stuff flakes off pretty easy if you are aggressive with the chisel but be careful because its sharp and cuts flesh with no reservations. Clean up is easy this way...big hard chunks compared to sticky wads of soft goo.

Good luck!

I'd recommend the the light weight parts as well, such as hood/bumpers/trunk lid/seats etc... however such stuff is mucho dinero http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif

The light weight bumper beams make a big difference however, and aern't TOO expensive...

however, on the spare - a buddy of mine got a flat this weekend, and the fix-a-flat was no good (sidewall damage).

It was nice to have the spare tire handy.

I went throught and pulled the extra weight I could.

Crossmember weight
Glovebox weight
Spare, jack, wrench replaced with fixaflat
trunk lining, mat and floor
rubber mat behind rear seat
a few unused brackets under the hood.

I plan to do some more looking this weekend and see what metal brackets can be replaced with nylon ties. Anyone know of any other weight savers? I also plan to go to a lightweight battery in the trunk.

Ditch both airbags and install the lightweight bumper reinforcement. (aka tinfoil)

Then pray you never collide with anything.

I hope you make sure your front seat passengers ALWAYS wear their seatbelts. That "weight" in the glove box lid is to keep their knees from going through the dash.

But if you don't care about that stuff, pull the one out from under the steering wheel. I took mine out because I wanted to mount some more electronics under there.

Cool info guys, I too have put my RS on a summer Track diet.

I have 2 questions:

Pipercub - Exactly where is this crossmember weight? Pix?

Horatio102 – Where under the steering wheel is there a weight?

Hey,

You guys forgot the lightweight dry cell battery! I'm getting a Dynabatt which is 13.5 lbs. as opposed to the 40something that ours weighs.
