Heard it yesterday for the very first time (might be because I always have the stereo on). Anyways, I bought my STI last year in October... so the noise is kinda weird... its not really a rattle (as I know thats "normal")... but its more of like an air noise, kinda like someone blowing a whistle improperly so instead of the normal whistle noise what you hear is like air with a peculiar tone. Seems to be coming from the dashboard or somewhere from the front... anyone else has this problem? Damn my car is breakin apart...

Were you going rather fast? Might be your side mirrors (I seem to remember reading this before).

How fast were you driving? Were the windows ALL the way closed? It might have been the classic high speed mirror howl.

on my '04 wrx, the mirror howl got pretty bad at times. I thought Subaru fixed this though??? even if the windows are closed it still happened, you just couldn't hear it as well. It only seemed to happen on the driver side mirror...

I know this is stupid, but are you sure it's not just the turbo spooling? If it only does it when you accelerate, that might be it. If you already know what that sounds like and that's not it, you also might check any vacuum lines for leaks. Good luck finding the source of the sound.

Check your intercooler hoses and connections to and from the intercooler...

Windows up. Not going that fast. And NO... its not the turbo. It sounds like a very weird rattle (not the usual rattle). Sounds like the car is old and stuff... sigh. Damn Subaru built quality.

I forgot to mention that the noise is like a very peculiar squeak... I can't even identify from what part of the car its coming from. Can usually hear this noise when the road is bumpy... any ideas? Suspension? Something loose?

I once had a dash bolt loosen up and made a squeaky rattle/hum noise. Dealer tightened it for free.

Another low whine noise can come from the roof rails if you have em. Some Suby mirrors can make a whine.

Sounds like cowl shake to me, like was said above, get the dealer to check the dash anchor bolts.

It could also be coming from the windshield. DOes it sound like someone is blowing on a reed or piece of grass? Try taping off the molding along the A pillar down the windshield, making sure you cover the windshield and the molding. (Use masking tape, easier to remove) If the noise goes away, take it to the dealer and tell them to fix it under warranty (assuming you are under 36K miles)

I have run across alot of these lately, and sealing the windshield works. No one has come back since

Taping it from the inside or outside? Sorry I'm a noob... hehehehe.

I'll also get the dashboard bolts checked as well.

Tape it along the outside of the A pillar down the windshield. (Tape it from the roof to the hood) You will see a molding that lays on top of the windshield going down the A pillar. You want to cover that molding and the windshield. Wind gets under the molding and causes the vibration noise you may be hearing.

THis noise will also make it seem like the dash is vibrating.
