View Full Version : New GTO
Spitfyre02 08-13-2005, 11:08 AM Hey wanna watch a 4 min bash of the GTO
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/VideosMakeModelIndex/make=Subaru/model=Impreza%20WRX%20STi#1
Reminds me of an artical Hot Rod Magazine did. They compared the STi to the Mustang Cobra. Even Hot Rod, the V8 bible magazine said that the STi was a better car in every catagory from Price to gas milage to quarter mile times. When I read the artical it sounded like Hot Rod didnt even want to admit that the STi was a better car but was forced to by looking at the shear numbers.
Samirr76 08-13-2005, 11:56 AM Even with a 100hp disadvantage it amazing how much pure technology will make up for it. The STi was only 1/10 of a second behind the GTO in the 1/4 mile and completely destroyed the GTO in handling.
Turk84 08-13-2005, 12:18 PM I wanna make my wagon a GTO eater. You know any dip***** that gets that car will think he's king of the road. It's an embarrassment to call that thing a GTO.
~Turk
00Maddog 08-13-2005, 03:31 PM just imagine if both cars had standard "buyer representitive type" mods. example most gto guys will add exhaust/power mods, compounding the handling shortcomings. most sti guys will add power mods too, but I see a lot more handling/suspension mods first too. so a year down the road the comparison will be worse...
they really didn't make a point of how much better looking the sti is...
AK_2002_WRX 08-13-2005, 04:38 PM haha. i almost traded my STi in for a 05 GTO.

This is GM were talking about. No shame in badging.
Spitfyre02 08-13-2005, 07:12 PM Yeah the GTO really is ugly. There is some dude that live down the way from me who has one. There is just nothing that stands out about that car. At 100 yards it could really be anything.
AK-Boost 08-13-2005, 07:35 PM Mmmm, I'd have liked to see the Evo MR put up against that GTO.
Nothing against the STi, but last I saw the MR was quicker.
Anyone seen the BMI of IX?
SparkysJDMSpeedWagon 08-13-2005, 11:18 PM Still waiting on an American-market Spec C...that would embarass the GTO even more than the MR. It's amazing that the GTO is doing so well in the Formula D (the professional US drift competition), because a stock GTO doesn't handle anything like that.
AK_2002_WRX 08-14-2005, 12:56 AM maybe cause Rhys millen has mad tyte skill:banana: i think the one they showed tonite was a rerun. and he lost.
jetfan2207 08-14-2005, 01:20 AM This is GM were talking about. No shame in badging.
Yeah, these are the same people who made the Impalla, Monte Carlo, and Malibu FWD grandma cars.
OrionAK 08-14-2005, 01:35 AM 14.1?
monaroCountry 08-14-2005, 09:28 PM The latest episode of Top Gear (Season 6:Episode 11) had the DWong Drifters drop in from Japan to do their thang with the Vauxhaul VXR Monaro.
Also check out Top Gear's Vauxhall VXR (Vauxhalls 6L GTO) track test. Some might be surprised of its time. Given a proper driver the GTO/monaro is lethal.

Honda Civic Type R - 1.36.5
AK_2002_WRX 08-14-2005, 09:45 PM i just drove an 04 GTO this weekend. i think its almost more fun to drive than my car:eek: the power is great, but i think i like the handling in my car better!
blackdout 08-15-2005, 06:20 AM they might be fast but they are expensive for what you get and on top of that I dont care how fast it is, it looks like a f-in b***h car. Its an embarassment to call that the new GTO. GM just needs to scrap the pontiac line.
AK-Boost 08-15-2005, 06:23 AM Haha, I drove an 05 GTO and "accidentally" did a 1 - 2 burnout in the bitch. It's pretty quick for damn sure. But for driveability reasons up here in AK, the STi would be a better choice. or....an Evo

33K for the gto is a damn good value. What you get as standard item in the GTO you get as extras in other cars. You have a world renowned machine with 400hp, a great steerer, great drifter, with equally great interior and quality.
Tell me of another car which equals the GTO as an overall package. Defeniately not the mustang.
blackdout 08-17-2005, 08:00 AM First off we are in a place called Alaska. We get screwed on everything we buy. the only thing that is good is that we dont have sales tax but even without that we still get screwed. As far as purchasing a car us alaskans probably would not get 33,000 for that car (havnt personally checked myself) I work at a chevy dealership and the only two cars that are not employee priced to my knowledge are the gto and the vette. We mark up a vette $7000 and people still buy it. So on a car like that, alaskans pay the price. To answer your question about what is a better value let me just say the obvious which is an STI and an EVO to start off with. better suspension, more reliable, safer and it hands down looks better. And if you dont think it looks better your preaching to the wrong crowd. Oh yah I forgot those gto guys wont get to drive in the winter like us suby drivers and that is are time to shine in the drifting scene. A gto does have one thing is that it looks better in the interior but two years down the line the gm leather looks like a damn ball sac. And to top it off when you get out the car looks like it belongs to a girl that just got her licence. Good effort from pontiac on making a fast car I would admit, but it is not rugged and intimidating like it should be but instead it gets comments like "hey thats a cute car."
OrionAK 08-17-2005, 04:32 PM I respect the new GTO--have nothing against it. I thought it was a pretty nice car for folks that would want something like that--"American Muscle" with more emphasis on power than overall performance. But I don't know if the NEW GTO is world-renowned, is it? Perhaps it's been around longer elsewhere, but like the Charger, it's currently name only and is going to have to speak for itself--not ride on the coat tails of the original GTO.

It was known as the Holden Monaro down there. That's where it's originally from. But I'd say the new GTO and the old GTO is world reknown.

The monaro (which is the new GTO) has a very rich racing history, stretching back from the 60's. It has won numerous Bathurst titles (arguably the toughest track in the world), takes part in targa Tasmania (against Skylines, porsches etc) and has won several 24hr races against lambos, porsches, ferraris and moslers.
Currently the monaro takes part in drifting comps both here (in aust) and in america, rally events, GT events in aust america and europe.

monaroCountry 08-18-2005, 08:22 AM The GTO (or monaro) is highly regarded in europe and has been regarded as a hero car.......watch Top Gear!!!!
WRXnFX 08-18-2005, 01:27 PM Top Gear didn't say much. The just liked it because it can go sideways. I think they said more about the Monaro in the CTS-V eps.
Didn't Rhys Millen have problems getting that car together and kept losing to the D1 japanese drifters?
Winslow
RWD 33k dollar car, I'd just get a used Vette.
RallyX13 08-18-2005, 02:24 PM I drove a GTO earlier this year when there is still a little slick stuff on the side roads, and discovered exactly why I would not have one. Even with the traction control, studs, and me taking off as lightly as possible, I still got stuck on a very small hill. Luckily there was no one behind me and I was able to back out and go around a different way. Other than that it had pretty good acceleration when it hooked up, but I would not want to drive one in winter here.
zachary.berrier 08-18-2005, 02:43 PM but we're comparing cars in race programs th stock gto isnt anything like rhys millens. It would be just like any other high torque rwd american car (spinnin at the line)
SQUAD_907 08-18-2005, 02:50 PM maybe cause Rhys millen has mad tyte skill:banana: i think the one they showed tonite was a rerun. and he lost.
he sucks...

Are you watching the most recent one?....................Hammon (?) tested the car, this was followed by a jap drifter, then showed how the monaro broke Mr Clarksons back, Stig then drove the car (with no sign of under or oversteer, except for the last 2 turns). They even showed Clarkson kiss the car (at the end), trust me you dont see that very often.
Didn't Rhys Millen have problems getting that car together and kept losing to the D1 japanese drifters?
How many american drifters made it to that stage?, who was the last american drifter?, how recent is the GTO at drifting? finally when did the japanese begin drifting?

Its high torque makes it the perfect weapon for drifting!!!!!

Hey, sweet, thanks for the info. A part of me was guessing that it's worn different disguises in the past, but I hadn't heard for sure!
If we're talking about Australian/American cars, I'd still get me one of the last of the V8 Interceptors over the GTO. :D
00Maddog 08-19-2005, 02:21 AM http://www.speedarena.com/news/uploads/sportscar/001_086.jpg
Have to admit I like this one. :disco:
blackdout 08-19-2005, 02:24 AM I think we are offending someone by bashing the GTO
monaroCountry 08-19-2005, 08:04 PM I think we are offending someone by bashing the GTO
Nah im not too thin skinned. Hey its better than doing my work :):):), working 9 to 5 without a little forum surfing gets me very :(.
It's cool. I'd be all over a Monaro if we could get them in the states, that's a badass car. I don't know what GM was thinking with the GTO though, they need to take some cues from Holden. ;)
monaroCountry 08-21-2005, 07:03 AM Ill take the holden coupe 4 thanks :):):).

Funny but GTO is a step forward from the F4ST3R Grand Am, and incredibly looking Grand Prix.
00Maddog 08-28-2005, 04:05 PM incredibly lame looking maybe
"I've got louvers, scoops, stripes, flares, and oil leaks"

The GTO the same thing. It's built in Australia. By Holden. On the Monaro platform.

It actually does handle alot like that. I've had hours of fun in the GTO :)
I got really defensive when I saw this thread trashing the GTO.. It's not an AWD Rally car. It's not built to be--- But vs. anything RWD on the market right now it blows it out of the water. ... There are very few stock corvettes on the road that can keep up with the GTO. The 05's are faster, by 4 tenths to 60--- the Z06's are faster, and the ZR-1's are faster... There's a few others thrown in for good measure of course... But the GTO can eat most anything on the road.
I'll be the first to admit though, I wish they had a more GTO-like design.
IndeSTi 08-29-2005, 08:15 AM Hey Garmin....
Are the Docs ready?
Nice to see you and sorry to hijack this. I will add I have come to appreciate some cars while waiting for my STi to get fixed. Without the opportunity to drive a rental car, I fear I would have remained biased, I have seen things I never have seen before...
From behind the 350Z the car actually looks nice.
An Altima is rather comfortable..fell asleep at the wheel many times.
Hmmm...I seem to be forgetting the others..long drive today. Lotsa sexy cars on both sides..I remember that at one point...but the rest of cars were just all blurrs.
Seriously though, glad I was able to remember your user name when I saw it. The rest is in jest. ;)

That's pretty bold and quite general. I'm sure I can think of at least ten that are faster than a GTO. Your key words, "anything RWD on the market." That leaves your comment open to almost anything in any price range.
Winslow
garmin 08-29-2005, 07:34 PM Almost anything less than $50k :)
lol indie, haven't thought about docs in a long time--- took me a second to get it :) Kinda want to go back to work for UPS again, decided finally that I need to get through school, and they'd help pay for it so that'd work.. See you at one of the meets sometime

I know, that's what the ;) was for. I was just giving the Monaro guy a hard time.
