CHERRY HILL, N.J., August 11, 2005 – Subaru of America, Inc. today reported that the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently concluded an engineering analysis regarding a delayed braking response feel by some owners of manual transmission 2002 and 2003 model year Subaru WRX vehicles. The NHTSA found no consistent or chronic pattern of poor brake performance in the complaint vehicles tested, and is closing this investigation.

However, in the interest of customer satisfaction, Subaru of America, Inc. would like to make a replacement ABS electronic control unit available to those owners who have experienced a “delayed braking response feel.” A letter describing the procedure will be sent to owners later this year.

I am sure they are doing this because we were all imagining the problem, and they needed to spend money on something. Seriously, this is a pleasant surprise considering the half a## NHTSA investigation found nothing wrong. I figured that would be the end of the story. Subaru's R and D staff must feel that the ABS system is not right. I will have to see how this new unit works, but I have to say, I am enjoying my lack of ABS, especially on dirt roads or in the snow. For me, it is instinctive to get off the brakes when you want to steer after locking up the brakes. Smart move by Subaru though, an ounce of prevention.....

Now if they would only voluntarily (read: free) fix my raw fuel leak (you know, that other NHTSA investigation they squashed), I'd be a happier customer.

Neither Subaru (nor my dealer) has ever done anything "Customer Satisfaction" related for me... except bring the WRX to the states :-)
