View Full Version : Help need computer advice
00Maddog 08-16-2005, 04:24 AM ok so i have this partition with a documents folder that is locked. it is the document folder for win xp on one of the users. that user is not an admin so it cannot change the access of the folder. the admin user on that system (i have a system on each partition, long story) will not launch due to serious system problems. I really need at the contents of this folder. How can I either change the limited account to admin, or add another admin account, without being in the admin user to begin with? if this doesn't make sense, well that's cause it doesn't make sense to me :D

Idahoser 08-16-2005, 04:29 AM Try system restore to clear your problems, have you tried scandisc yet?
00Maddog 08-16-2005, 04:31 AM can you do system restore from a limited account? I will try...
IndeSTi 08-16-2005, 07:48 AM I can get that data PM me.
prometheum 08-16-2005, 09:43 PM you need to be an admin to give anyone admin rights
00Maddog 08-16-2005, 10:06 PM aaargh. my admin account won't load. I can get into every other folder on the c partition too, just the one I need is locked somehow. I prob did it once to "protect" myself, haha it worked. So, I am at a point where I would like to buy a second hard drive, format it, use it for system, and then get dirty with this old drive. I think I would like to buy some good driver/format/partition software, with advanced features like password protection of seperate partitions, and the ability to change partitions without reformating the entire drive. I used to have a program like this for my mac, and I loved it. Someone has to make one for the windows world... or am I just stuck with xp??
If this was my old mac I would not be locked out of my data.....
so I guess I am looking for sugestions for a good hd driver utility or whatever it would be called. Thanks for any help guys. If my computer only had an obdII port... :D
AKLGT 08-16-2005, 10:29 PM If my computer only had an obdII port...
that's great!
we have an 160 GB external hard drive. once i'm working again, i'll be getting a port for it too just like i have on my printer so both mavrik's computer and my laptop can access it. we tried setting up a network, but couldn't get the drivers right... :( maybe i'll bug my dad again to see if he can do it still...

you are looking for partition magic, but back up all your data before you use it
edit: if you just need to copy a few files from a password protected directory to a non-secure directory you can use knoppix, its a distro of linux that boots off a cd, you dont need to install it or anything. when it boots up just drag & drop the file to where you need it http://www.knoppix.org/
00Maddog 08-16-2005, 10:58 PM thanks for the info, the knoppix will require some research, can I just download it and record it onto cd/dvd? thanks again. I will prob get partition magic to format my new drive, then backup onto it to format the old drive. my 80 is split 50/50 with an xp system on each:D one is smooth running, other is a mess... damn worms...
ol'skoolwrx 08-16-2005, 11:18 PM hey jerry i say just get a new computer

5 minutes...seriously. If the drive is working fine and the data is not encrypted I can just carry the tools in my car and you can meet me with the drive, if you have a 2nd drive I can put it on there, change permissions whatever..if it is XP Home then there is the Owner (default admin) account that is "Administrator" but they have a hidden Administrator account...and I can change any Admin password on any windows machine if I have physical access...
I can provide a temp drive if you want a place to store what you want off the whole drive and you can just wipe/reload.
And you can try the easiest XP Home trick, if you can hit f8 after the initial boot screen, choose safe mode and if the "administrator" account icon is not on the welcome screen, press ctrl+alt+del and type "administrator" for the user name and no password (of course if no one has created one which would take some knowledge and then there would still be 2 admin accounts so seems doubtful). The nice thing about this is the missing "security" tab (right click any file/directory -> properties) is here and you can modify users permissions or click on the advanced button and take/change/give ownership (absolute control) of whatever directories needed (don't do that to the whole drive/partition, just do it on the lowest possible folder you do not have the permissions you need). Or you can just copy/cut and paste to an area that you have can change the inherited security permissions on or create a new account with administrator privileges or copy the whole profile to another user/win xp install. Or I can crack it open on the binary level and look for everything that ever has been on that drive...fomatted even (less likely though)..if you have a large drive and never have used all of it and have not defragremented (if you use less than 50% the defrag rarely matters)...and I mean every directory and most likely file name...not all recoverable but I have met many people and done work that I now can not look these people strait in the eye any longer..scary what ppl do at work..true colors way out of control.
And just to sum it up....in less time it took to write this as I would hate to see a 100% chance (presuming all details are accurate in original post) of getting the data go by.

Not trying to hijack this but if one of them remembers a job about 3-4 weeks ago setting up some usb wireless-g adapters and not getting one to work on a win 98 machine (cute girl, not comfortable mentioning business name) shoot me a message. I wanted to chat and learn about the Squad as we highly recommend buying equip from best buy and this is the first time I ever heard anything like this. If not no worries, not a big deal it was my roommates girl and it is working now.

was this done at your house or at best buy itself? There are no female Geek Squad members that go to housecalls.

Not trying to hijack this but if one of them (referring to the above quoted text) remembers a job about 3-4 weeks ago setting up some usb wireless-g adapters and not getting one to work on a win 98 machine (cute girl (client), not comfortable mentioning business name (location)) shoot me a message. I wanted to chat and learn about the Squad as we highly recommend buying equip from best buy and this is the first time I ever heard anything like this. If not no worries, not a big deal it was my roommates girl(client) and it is working now.
Thanks for the reply and sorry it is so generic in detail, it makes it confusing.
It is not really a huge deal if not easily remembered, I was curious if I could get an understanding of what they offer. She (client) was very happy, and said he did put a lot of time into it and for the price it was a great deal with or without that. I was mainly using that as a reference point (icebreaker) and I think it would benefit us both, current clients, and future clients. If not interested or it is something that could not be arranged where they get paid for the time. I am not looking for anyone to go out of there way, but there is no issue that a client has so I can not pay for your time if it factors into paycheck. We have varied hourly rates and any unpaid work is at the bottom, makes it hard to spare time at work when that can cost you money.

It's fun to reminisce :furious: ...
If it fits the clients needs, isn't physically broken and they ask usk to -"make it work", that is what we do. :) / :(
PM me please if any need, gonna un-hijack and hopefully hear how it turned out from 00Maddog.
