View Full Version : Tuner coming up to AK

Anyone interested? He works mainly on rx7's but has experience with other cars as well. I mention the utec to him and he's interested on how to use it. I sent him a few guides so he can learn up on it. Dunno how much he'll charge to tune yet.

If he isn't familair with the UTEC, I would think you would be wasting your and his time and money.
OrionAK 08-17-2005, 04:23 PM I was thinking the same thing--why couldn't we learn up on it, too and save the money. He's a tuner already so maybe has some sort of understanding, but I wouldn't think that alone would be worth the price.
Of course, he may very well be worth it...
00Maddog 08-18-2005, 05:12 AM I say we all mob the alcan and tune somewhere on a dyno.
OrionAK 08-18-2005, 11:56 PM Has he given a price yet, Psy?

Nope I havent talk to him about pricing. Ill keep an eye out on akmotorsports on updates...
fc6666 08-19-2005, 03:24 AM Too bad my FC is in FL.

OKRS25 08-19-2005, 01:29 PM If he can tune a 7 with a Power FC he can more than tune a UTEC in a WRX. And I would trust him more to tune a piston car than most piston tuners out there because there is no margin for error what so ever when tuning an RX-7. Detonate once = Apex Seals fuxxored.
00Maddog 08-19-2005, 05:31 PM this is true, rx-7's are the hardest friggen things to work on ever. I have invested a lot of time into one, and learned just enough to stay away from them from now on. I would say his largest hardship will be dealing with our gas. he is prob used to tuning with 93+.

That's like saying a french chef would stand a chance at a BBQ contest.
If one has the UTEC, I would suggest they get the tuning equipment (TXS TUner or equivalent) and learn what the changes do.
Psylas: Have you had any experience with the UTEC? other than reading a manual? I have no knowledge of tuning RX-7's. Just seems like if you have the UTEC and knew how it worked = end of story! Paying someone to read you the manual seems like a waste of money.

Ummm... All tuning is the same, what your trying to achieve is an ideal operating conditions for an automobile. UTEC is no different than any other tuning computer and if people trust this guy to tune rotaries I would have no problem what so ever trusting him with my piston engine.
In fact for the UTEC being fairly new in the tuning market I have seen units that have been out since the mid 90's that are easier to tune and have better interfaces and datalogging.

I don't know if he is a relative or something, trying to get free passage to alaska, but don't see the benefits of him over doing it yourself with the appropriate equipment. When he's gone ... you're back to the status quo as one adds/deletes go fast bits to the car.
Are these road tunes or is there a dyno secret for our AWD vehicles? What's the difference between him switching parameters in the maps while here or telling you which ones to switch his chair in the lower 48? Just seems that you need to data log to learn what's going on. You'll need more logs to change the maps. One can do the same thing, post maps at WRXhackers, WRXfanatics, NASIOC, etc and someone would help you out.
But if you insist on paying money for a perceived benefit ... at the end, you'll become much wiser!
Edit:
Sparky and Tribal = low 13's on the stock turbo.
I haven't seen their logs for knock but I think they are doing pretty good!

Just the 2weeks ive had it on the car. I'm starting to get the hang of reading the maps and what each function does...just need more time with it I guess. It would be cool to learn off this guy was my main thing vs just getting a tune and not knowing how it was done.
OKRS25 08-22-2005, 05:07 PM I personally would rather pay someone some money for a strong base tune to my mods and then worry about making adjustments myself when I bolted on new parts.
And you would be suprised how many people in Alaska running a UTEC are running a poor tune and could unleash more power on what you have available, unless something has changed in the year that I have been gone. It just seems to me the piece of mind would be worth a little money.

Key word.

Hehe, true, but if your going to spend that much on a fully programmable engine computer you should budget for a proper tune.
Luckily the boxer's are a very forgivable engine.
OrionAK 08-22-2005, 10:39 PM True. I don't have a grasp on what tuners cost, though...numbers like $200/hr are running through my head--a few hours of that and you've doubled the price of the Comp! May be pretty reasonable, though.
OKRS25 08-23-2005, 01:08 PM Not sure how much alot of tuners are going to cost. Steve Kan, the main player in tuning RX-7's and probably one of the most expensive tuners, does a $300 flat fee for a tune. But what your talking about is unlocking anywhere from 25 to 75 RWHP, which a $300 bolt on part wouldn't do for you.
Thats been my crutch so far since I didn't go with a programable unit, I am sitting between 300 and 325 rwhp and I should be able to get a safe 350 with my mods not to mention alot better power band down low with anew unit so I have been trying to source one out like mad.
