EJ5-40T

The Momentum EJ5-40T turbocharger is the “base” model turbo for the ej20/ej25 powered cars manufactured by Subaru. The smallest turbo we currently carry for the WRX/STi cars, it flows 580CFM and is capable of supporting over 400 crank horsepower. It has our most efficient turbine wheel, paired with our smallest compressor wheel. This combination produces the quickest turbo spool up time, and delivers more than enough power for the EJ-20 and EJ-25 engine.

Unlike competitors turbochargers, the EJ Line of turbos are journal bearing units. This keeps costs down and adds a factor of reliability that most ball bearing turbos simply cannot match. Momentum is confident in the design, performance, and reliability of the journal bearing system, and includes a 1 year 12,000 mile (20,000 KM) warranty for every journal bearing turbo we sell. Ball bearing units don’t offer a warranty like this because they simply are not as durable as journal bearing systems, and most ball bearing turbo cartridge failures are not easily corrected. A majority of ball bearing unit failures require total replacement of the turbo cartridge.

The EJ5-40T turbocharger is a direct replacement turbocharger for the WRX and WRX Sti. For European appliactions, this means the 1997-on series of cars. Any Subaru car that can take the VF series of turbochargers can adapt the ej5-t series. For these cars, no cutting, welding, custom manifolds, or engineering required to install this turbocharger. Take off the old turbocharger, put the EJ5-40T in it’s place, install the oil and water lines, and that’s it. The turbocharger unit is internally wastegated, and comes with the adjustable wastegate actuator.

Of course, with any larger turbocharger, modifications to the factory fuel system are required. These modifications include larger fuel injectors, a higher volume fuel pump, and some sort of fuel control computer. Momentum Turbos does not and can not recommend any brand over another with this turbocharger.

FAQ

* Direct bolt up to EJ20 engine (wrx)
* Comes with water lines, oil return lines, and gasket
* Has 12 month 12,000 mile warranty
* Supports as much HP as vf22 turbo, spools up like vf24 turbo
* Journal bearing, NOT ball bearing turbo
* Turbo flows 580cfm supports 400 crank HP
* The VF22 has a 40mm inducer on the compressor side, the EJ540 has a 48 mm inducer this means the EJ540 can and does flow more air than the vf22

UPDATE!
June 21st, 2005
EJ5-40T test turbo #3 makes 331 HP/336 ft/lbs of Torque with an exhaust leak! Click Here for the dyno chart!

June 16th 2005
EJ5-40T test turbo #3 installed with no problems. EJ20 powered wagon undergoing testing. Turbo has made 304 HP on 91 octane gas @ 18psi. Momentum Power? Momentum POWER!
Thanks to MAC autosport in Parker, Colorado for testing and tuning EJ5-40T test turbo #3. Nick certainly is a UTEC Jedi!
Dyno charts coming SOON!

June 15th 2005
EJ5-40T test turbo #2 installed with a hitch-see "Installation Notes"
EJ5-40 Test turbo installed with too small oil feed banjo bolt on the insistance of Momentum Turbochargers staff. Turbo failed within two dyno runs. Proof positive that turbochargers need oil. Note to dealers-The stock banjo bolt needs a bit of enlargement.

EJ5-40T test turbo #2 (RIP) makes over 300 wheel HP/Torque while dying. Momentum POWER!

June 8th 2005
EJ5-40T test turbo #1 installed without a hitch. Still waiting for test data from test turbo #1. Thanks to Vivid Racing for testing unit #1!

EJ5-40T

It spools up faster than the vf34 but holds power to redline, the VF34 spools up slower and falls off at 5000 RPMs. The VF34 is operating outside of it's optimal boost range when turned above 18psi.

In fact, the vf39 which is VERY similar to the vf34, has shown that it cannot tolerate "overboost" conditions-quite a few vf39 turbine housings have shown cracks around the wastegate flapper because of the heat generated when these series of turbos goes out of it's operating range. The vf34 vs ej540t chart is 20psi vs 20psi.

COBB 2.5 MAPS:

The cobb stage 2.5 map is for a vf34-this turbo, because it is SO MUCH bigger than the vf34, will cause a lean condition above 5000 RPMs if you run high boost on this map.

If you have no way of monitoring your air fuel ratio, DO NOT run the EJ540t past STOCK boost levels on any cobb maps for the VF34.

DYNO INFO:

The dyno results were made with a front mount intercooler. This is VERY VERY important, not because of the location of the intercooler, but the VOLUME of the intercooler. When you take a set volume of air and compress it, you raise the temperature. When you take the same volume of air and expand it, you lower the temperature. Why is this important? Well, the stock WRX top mount intercooler is NOT that large, overall. If you take off the stock td04 turbo and put on the larger EJ540T turbo, the turbo is still moving the same volume of air.

ImportBoost

Because the volume is the same, when you run boost levels higher than stock, you are actually compressing the air, thus raising the temperature. You turn the boost WAY up, and you are radically compressing, thus radically raising the temperature of, the intake air, sometimes to unsafe levels.

If you take off the stock top mount intercooler, and put on a larger one, you are increasing the VOLUME of your air intake sytemI(expanding), which COOLS the air.
