View Full Version : Got some new morettes now a got a few questions.
crank0r 08-20-2005, 12:32 PM so got a set of used morettes and installed them yesterday see pics below. my questions are, first off Im pretty sure I want to paint them, but i havent seem them on black wrx's very often, and dont recall if people usually paint the entire thing, or the angry style. which do you think looks better, and if you have links to pics of both styles on a black car id highly appreciate them. my other question is the light output on the low beam isnt that great, so i was wondering about getting a nice set of piaa H7 bulbs or even the H7 HID kits you can buy on ebay for 200. They are supposedly 8500k and look likea very nice bright blue pattern, are they worth the money or are those cheap HID kits just CHEAP. pics are below and any comments and suggestions are appreciated, tia ...

Mulder 08-20-2005, 12:49 PM For pics I suggest you look in the Members Car Gallery section, with some searching you should find what you're looking for. IMO on a black car you are probably best off painting the entire cover body color, the "raccoon" style won't really show up well since it will be flat black on gloss black.
As for the light output, the first thing you should do is make sure they are properly aimed, this is very important on E-code lights due to the sharp cutoff. If they aren't aimed properly you won't be getting maximum lighting performance. You can refer to Daniel Stern's aiming instructions, here-
http://danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html
If you do decide to upgrade the bulbs I wouldn't bother with PIAA, they are overpriced and may not last that long. A set of Osram Silverstars in H7 will make a noticeable difference in the light output, and they aren't that expensive. You can get them from Daniel Stern and some other online vendors, they aren't available in stores.
Also avoid the cheap HID kits. Aside from being illegal to sell which means that only the shady vendors still do so, the quality of such kits is questionable. 8500K is too high a color temperature for good usable light, there will be too much blue light and glare. The optimum temp for HIDs is 4100-4300K, which is the color of all OEM HIDs.
With the Morettes and other H7-based lights you have the option of using OEM HID components without having to buy someone's crappy kit, because the H7 housings can accept D2S bulbs. This will give the best possible results for an HID conversion, however the lighting won't be as effective as true OEM HIDs since the projectors are designed for halogens. You can read more about this and other HID-related things in the HID FAQ thread up at the top of this forum.
Finally, a very strong suggestion about protecting the lenses. You should get some protective film for them NOW, before you end up with a broken light that costs $100 and takes forever to order from France through a Morette dealer. There are several inexpensive options available for the film and they all work very well. I have the Xpel on mine, for $15 you can get a 1-sq-ft. raw sheet of the stuff and cut out some 4" circles to apply to the lights. Their site is www.xpel.com
crank0r 08-20-2005, 01:16 PM thanks for the advice, I guess ill just goto to local shop and get some 30-40 bulbs and see if they help till i can afford hte D2S HID kit. And they came with the stonegaurd on them. And is there anyway to get matching paint in a spray can ? I assume not since the pearl cant be matched in single stage. Maybe ill shoot them gloss black till i can afford a shop to spray them and the side moldings. thanks again...and ill look around for the pics...
Mulder 08-20-2005, 02:11 PM Good deal on the Stongard. At least they are protected so you won't be posting one of the all-too-common "My Morette lens broke, what do I do?" threads.
The point I was making about the HIDs is that you don't need any "kit". On my Morettes I have OEM type Philips D2S bulbs ($60/pair on Ebay brand new) with Hella/Philips OEM type ballasts, also available on Ebay. Advantages of using OEM stuff is that it's the best possible quality, German made vs. the Asian junk used in some of the aftermarket setups, and it's also readily available. Replacement bulbs will always be easy to find, unlike the non-standard "rebased" ones used in the kits. Same for the ballasts.
crank0r 08-21-2005, 08:45 PM so your suggesting buying something like this instead...

Mulder 08-21-2005, 08:52 PM Yes on the bulbs, no on the ballasts. You'd want this type-

Also these adapters so the bulbs are properly mounted and centered-

crank0r 08-22-2005, 06:33 PM u have any pics of yours on at night ?
All I have to say about HID is to check out the HIDPlanet University before you buy ANYTHING...

Take the time to register and ask those pros about your lighting needs!
crank0r 08-24-2005, 06:58 PM well i ended up just paiting them gloss black, look ok if not in direct sunlight. Anyone know how much it costs to have these color matched ?

file_id 08-26-2005, 05:10 AM I'm guessing $60-100 if you have a body shop do it. Or you could do it yourself by getting the paint at paintscratch.com
I would also suggest getting some stoneguard for your morettes. Worth the investment. As for HIDs I got my phillips ballast + bulbs at Xenonfactory.com. Their kit has a relay for each ballast and the bulbs+ballasts come with a 3 year warranty.
Hank3 08-26-2005, 10:12 AM I would also suggest getting some stoneguard for your morettes. Worth the investment.
According to him, the StonGard came with the lights ;)
crank0r 08-27-2005, 01:39 AM yeah came with stonegaurd, and i dunno about painting it by myself cuz its a 3 stage paint i believe and seems like to much work :( plus i dont have a paint gun and i dont think it can be done with spra cans...but thanks for the advice
fuss310 08-27-2005, 03:20 PM you might want to blur out your license plates in the top pics also :)
