i'm currently under geico and paying way to damn much after buying the wrx :(

i've been with them since january 27th of this year (when i bought my first car the toyota celica) have no tickets, no accidents, clean driving record.

i went to progressive.com to get a quote from them to see what htey could offer me. online they told me i could get it for $200 less every month and i'd be a retard to not go over to progressive. well...after giving them a call i was very disheartened when they quoted me for the same price telling me something about alaska :shakes fist: and having 2 consecutive years of prior insurance with less than a 31 day lapse within those 2 years. I HAVENT OWNED OR DRIVEN A CAR IN 1 1/2 YEARS i mean ***bbq? seriously what kind of stupid law is this? i mean the difference in the price is absurd 200 bucks a month, i could get like eleventy billion points on my license and not have the price raise that much! i pretty much have a squeaky clean driving record, and the $200 a month just boggles my mind. is this just an alaskan law or do other states have it too? and *** is the point of this law?

Might try USAA, although they raped the hell out of me when I moved here. AIG also touts low insurance rates. The WRX is just really expensive to insure at your age, good driving record or not.

I currently have Geico and minimal coverage on my WRX, as it's about to be sold, and I still think I pay too much.

but still how am i a higher risk just because i didnt have insurance for 31 consecutive days in the past 2 years? i mean its not like i've been driving arround w/o insurance for the past 2 years, I DIDNT OWN OR DRIVE A CAR FOR OVER A YEAR and i'm being penalized for that? she said it was a law, which sounds like bs to me the more i think about it

edit: why am i being penalized for not owning a car for over 31 consecutive days?

Even if I had a lapse in insurance, I always told the insurance company I had no lapse. If you really want to know more, call them and ask.

Sometimes it's good to tell the ins. company you've been quoted $xx.00 lower per month at (insert company name here) to switch. It will make them recalculate the figures to see if they can save you some bucks.

Might get online quotes for insurance, if you haven't already done it.

Shoulda bought my car........

sorry, but if you lie to the insurance company about a lapse they will find out. they have to confirm the info with your previous insurance co. my mom worked for all state for 8 years. trust me, if you lie, they will find out and you will be sr22 (high risk) and NO big company will insure you so you'll be stuck with crappy expensive insurance! :( but with your age and starting over again, you're in a high risk category regardless. it sucks, but that's how it works. sorry.

Has anyone had luck with online quotes?

My insurance went up when I got the new car, I have Allstate. Also, with my old car, my insurance went up for no reason. I got online quotes from Geico and Progressive, with equal or better coverage, for about 200 less for a 6 month span for my new car. Can I expect these quotes to stand in the real world, since I specified Alaska online?

I can understand insurance rising when you get a new car. But by this logic, your rates should also go down as time goes by.

I would recommend checking out USAA since you are military, they have good rates and they take good care of you. I have been very pleased with them. I know they were cheaper than Geico or Allstate when I switched over, but I am sure it varies from person to person.

Good luck, insurance sucks when you are younger. I remember paying $350.00/month for liability on my 1986 Civic DX, and that was a LONG time ago.

I think its Alaska, in 2001 I was paying $370 per month for a 87 RX-7 Turbo, pip and liability, minimum coverage, with a Florida policy through Geico(11 pts on licence). Last year I was paying $160 per month for a 87 RX-7 and a 02 WRX, full coverage on both through USAA, Kansas policy, now its $300 per month(just the WRX), USAA Alaska policy, 22 yr old single male, no points, w/ CDL A,w/ a $500 comp & collision deductable. It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

online quote for me was way higher than through geico

Tell USAA you don't need pip, its not required in Alaska or something, or get your comp and collision deductible raised (just have money for an emergency)
Try a by phone quote its usually lower than online, 1-800-531-8111, or call progressive "we will give you two quotes of our leading competitors" thing.

I'm not trying to pitch USAA or anything, but they have always helped me out, and in the long run they have paid out more money than I've paid to them.

will having a speeding ticket (5mph over) raise my insurance really high? i got something in the mail that i need to sign so the DMV will release my records to Allstate.

Usually tickets have to be 10mph or over to go on your record.

USAA has always had the best rates when I checked around, even when lived in Alaska. On top of that after you have been a member for a year you get checks back at certain points, I got a check last year for around $200 from the right at Christmas.

They also have kickass financing rates. Interest rate on my '99 Miata was just under 10% at a local bank, interest on my '94 RX-7 (Which most banks wouldn't trust anyways) is 4.9% and I have less than stellar credit.

They also fought for me when my wife hit one of the base buses on Elmendorf, I proved to them that there was no way she could have done as much damage as Legal was trying to get them to pay by pointing out some things that were misquoted on some witness statements and they sent in a claims specialist and got it dropped.

Okay, I am done preaching how great USAA is. Well, one more plug. USAA is the best benefit I have gotten from the Military.

whats generally the best if you're not in the military? I have state farm with all their discounts and perfect record and I am still paying $175/month for my mustang.

fc6666
08-24-2005, 04:11 AM
I think $175 is relatively good, full coverage right?

cooparu

PeterK, how old are you?

175 wouldn't be too bad if you were, say 19.

AKLGT
08-24-2005, 04:07 PM
USAA is about the best there is. not only do they have the best rates, you also get an annual dividend at the end of the year for what you paid in premiums. if you are trying to keep your costs down as much as possible, i recommend having $500/$500 deductibles for both comp/collision. that's the highest allowed by AK state law I believe.

and yes, ANY speeding or traffic violation ticket will cause your insurance to go up. :( it will go off your record after 3 yrs. when i got my speeding ticket in 2000, my rates went up but only by about $5/month with USAA.

$175/mo isn't bad for a single under 25 full coverage in a WRX. lol. it is more money on the WRX than the LGT for me.

is that with GEICO you said? I would call USAA and have them quote you on the phone like someone else has already suggested. once you are a member, you are for life. if you are not active duty military or a direct family member, you cannot qualify for USAA. once you are out, you can't ever get back onboard, unless you qualify again under those previously mentioned reasons.

USAA full coverage, $250/$100 coverage, both LGT and Vibe, Renters insurance, electronics insurance = $212/month. :) when i called the other places, they wanted about $50-100/month MORE!

You can still qualify for USAA insurance if you were active duty at one time and honorably discharged as well.

I have State Farm and because my mother has been with them and co-signed on my first vehicle I got her long-time and good driving record discounts even after I got my own account established. I also reduced my total monthly payment by adding renters insurance (25k) because the multiple policy discount was more than the additional charge. Different ways to work it..uhhh get the most appropriate coverage at the best cost.

AKLGT

some insurance co's will let you combine renters insurance with the auto. unfortunately USAA doesn't. :( but we did get a multi-car discount. not until we get home owners insurance can i get an umbrella policy...

Yes, you have to either be in the military, have been in, or be a dependent of a USAA member.

I have statefarm, ben with them for ... well, I guess since startign driving. Clean record, over 25, multi-line (renters and car) and soem sort of other discount on it. I pay ~107/mo for my car. granted I get charged $3 for writing a check.

From my limited experience, mainly from relatives, the rates are higher here because it is alaska (as is everything else, "Oooo, Alaska, lets screw them over" ) Also, from my understanding progressive or Geico, forgot which, but my bro had them up here and moved back home, when he returned he was considered "high risk" because he choose to save money instead of the arm&leg payment with statefarm back then.

Allstate gave me a quote for $3947 every 6 months I laughed at the rep and left.
I went to Geico and my insurance is about 1/4 of that every 6 months. Granted I'm only 19 and no speeding tickets-yet

Well back in canada when I lived there, I was paying $125 a month CAD for full coverages... clean record and everything... you even get a break if you take driving school which I did also... Anything like that up here for the rest of you?

What are you paying now?

Driving school used to take off on the price...a decent percent, at least back when I did it in the early 90's. They had all sorts of things--straight A's in school dropped it, more than one car/policy with the company dropped it, etc, etc.

I'm sub $100 now, for the WRX (I think I said $96 earlier, but it keeps going down--I think it's like $92 now...). No tickets in last 5 years (I think that's all they look for, right?), no accidents, etc.

with both cars fully insured plus renters insurance, it's about $210/mo. i won't go into all the exact amounts, but with my job they have to be pretty high for the car, and for the folks to give me the antique furniture, renters had to be high too. oh well. i was paying about $120/mo for the vibe gt and i think i pay about $90 for the LGT with multi car discount. i think mav's vibe is about $100/mo?? and the renters is about $20

and most insurance co will give a good student discount and also a drivers ed discount, but only if you are 21 and under.

In new york, insurance companies had defensive driver courses you could take, and you'd get a discount on your insurance that lasted for 2 years. The course was like 40 bucks (8 hours maybe?), but that was covered after about 2 months of feeling the discount.

It sure helped when I was a young single male.

Geico gave me a discount because I'm a government employee. Works for me.

I pay $700 for 6months (~118/mo) for a 2000 chev p.u. and the wrx (geico). But, my wife and I are 2x as old as most of you (22yr olds) ;) ... And I've been lucky on tickets for the past 5 yrs or so, knock on wood. This is one isolated example of where being old is OK. Of course those rates can all change in a hearbeat, with an accident or a couple of tickets.
