So.....I just put on an Injen STI red cai on my fxt...and I need some help in quieting this thing down.
I dig the intake. I re-set the ECU with the install..and I have definitely picked up some throttle response and mid range pull. I also previously installed a TXS TMIC and a perrin inlet.....but the car felt pretty much stock with those mods.
(These mods and others to come will support a 20G install in a few weeks)
So anyway.....of course I now have the intake noise and I'm not diggin that.
Can you guys tell me if the turbo surge and blow off sound I'm hearing is comming from the intake inlet/cone filter(down in the fender) ? Or is the noise just resonating through the thin aluminum tube of the intake itself ?
If it's comming from the inlet......then I'm thinking that I can reasonably build an enclosure to put into the fender that would house and sound insulate the filter/inlet. I would then have this enclosure air rammed from a modified fog light opening.
I know that it's not apples to apples by any means...but if the intake "feels" good on a TD04....then it should add something to the 20G setup.....since it will be tuned for it. So that's why I want to keep it.....as long as I can find a way to tone it way down.
Any suggestions or experience with making a CAI not sound like one ?

I think you will be stuck with that sound unless you go with a k&n panel filter or short ram intake.

Nope....it's too much for my conservative taste. I have to take business associates out to lunch...etc. And those folks as well as the "lady friends" are simply going to be asking "what's that noise"...and why would you modify something to sound like that !!
I have a borla hush on it's way......and will be doing as much as I can to keep the part throttle charachter as stock as possible. A little rumble from the exhaust won't be nearly as noticable as this intake noise is.
I could be in a no win battle hear. I'll throw the stock box back on and let the tune fall where it may if that's what's needed.

Well it was a half a joke - I love the sound, but COMPLETELY understand what your dealing with - Im over 300whp and my car looks/sounds stock. I have the stock catback - borla hush unless you have a bigger turbo wont add ANYTHING really. I was going to add the greddy evo2 before my protune, even the tuner said unless your going bigger turbo within the next year (i dont have the funds) then don't worry about a catback - it won't do anything but just add noise. Even though the hush is quiet it won't add anything that you will notice, except more sound, which you don't want. If you put my car next to a stock sti (im running san invidia v2 dp- CATLESS) it is a TOUCH deeper in tone, but if I said to you hey my car is stock and you heard it idle/ drove in it.. you wouldn't notice, untill i went about 3500 rpm and it threw you back in your seat ;) then you would know that isnt stock!
Hope this helps, and if you can return the exhaust i WOULD. My tuner saved me the 575 bux for the evo2 and thats a lower end cost of a catback for the STI. However, if you want more sound then by all means youll love it. But if you want the stock look / stock sound do what i did.. If you want modified look but stock sound, get just an axleback (just tailpipe piece). The STI STOCK exhaust is 3"...

I thought a short ram would only be louder that this one ? I could easily convert this Injen setup to a short ram "of sorts"
I could live with anything that at least was quiet under part throttle. This thing makes noise on the highway at crusing speed. The stereo covers it up of course.......but without that on....it does not sound too civilized.

Not sure how the Injen mounts, but from the experimentation that I have done on the FXT: if the pipe is is not well isolated from both the inner and outer body panels it will resonate like crazy throughout the cabin, and generally sound like the source of the noise is from the driver's side of the car (god forbid if it's touching the inside of the fender!) It's almost as if the sound travels across the front bumper cavity and into the left side wheel well...make sure that this is not the case...

im not sure, but the injen may max out the oem MAF with a 20G.
what's the inner dia @ the maf union?
aps has a 65mm (oem-ish) dia c.a.i. that works very well, and also they previously did a 70mm inatke for more flow (bigger blowers).
that would be my biggest concern,as it surely is gonna need a retune regardless (watch out for running too lean before tuning)

yeah, a short ram will also be loud. I've never had a cai but I mistakingly assumed it was louder than a short ram intake. I can hear my perrin big maf intake but it's not as loud as a txs shorty I used to have.

The STI STOCK exhaust is 3"...
No, it definitely is not. The tip of the stock muffler is not the size of the whole exhaust. But, I do agree that the STi stock catback is not a restriction while still using the stock turbo. If you don't plan on swapping hair dryers and don't want more loudness, then don't waste your money on a catback.

hey there. i had the typhoon and it was loud. i just moved over to the APS cai. i dont know the design of the injen but i assume since it is a cai it sits in the fender wall... what about spraying road kill in the fender? or doing some dynamat? both are sound deadening.. one is a spray one is a type of metal. not sure if that is what you are looking for. before you do that i think you need to grasp where the noise is coming from. if it is from the fender wall... well the sound proofing stuff would work nicely. you could also add sound proofing where your tip of exhaust is to quiet that down...
