View Full Version : Metellic vibration when starting up on STI
hilfiger4you 08-23-2005, 03:12 PM When I start up my 05 STI in the morning or after not driving it for a few hours, I get this like metallic sound coming from the engine. It sounds like a whistling/vibrating sound. However, it is a very light rattling noise. Once it warms up or I get going for a few minutes no more noises.
any ideas?
happasaiyan 08-23-2005, 04:12 PM check your oil. you may be low...and you should fill up before driving any more.
deathinacan 08-23-2005, 10:24 PM anyone own it before you?
hilfiger4you 08-23-2005, 10:48 PM bought it new with 11 miles on it.
maestro 08-24-2005, 12:07 AM could it be uppipe heatshields?
VR62STI 08-24-2005, 04:02 AM Or turbo heatshields, or downpipe heatshields. Seriously - this sh:t drives me nuts with the STI. You also have to get used to various suspension clunking that doesn't exist on other cars.
hilfiger4you 08-24-2005, 07:13 PM but would the sound dissappear after the car is warmed up? And also any of you have this issue?
thanks

you never answered my question. this happened to me on another car...and the culprit was lack of oil.
hwy61 08-24-2005, 09:56 PM Assuming you aren't low on oil, my '05 STI made a sound like a dry lifter or an out of adjustment lifter/tappet when cold or even hot after sitting a while. This would not be the problem on an STI but that is exactly what it sounded like. It disappeared at 30,000 miles when the #2 fuel injector was replaced.
Whistling/vibrating seems totally different from rattling. Heat shields can cause all kinds of racket, none of it desirable. Radar detector cycling
Good luck! hwy61
hilfiger4you 08-25-2005, 12:19 AM no i am not low on oil and in fact i am a little over the full mark. It only sounds whistling like when I accelerate. Sound goes away after 2minutes of driving.
Airborne Guy 08-25-2005, 12:41 AM bad turbo?? never know, what mods have you done?
if none, then TAKE IT TO THE DEALER
super-ru 08-25-2005, 12:54 AM Maybe it's your TGVs?
hilfiger4you 08-25-2005, 12:57 AM TGV? what is that? No I got no mods.
super-ru 08-25-2005, 12:40 PM Search Tumble Generator Valves, it's basically an intake restriction to help cold subies pass emissions testing, it sounds like piston slap if you accelerate very hard when the engine is cold.
cboggess 08-25-2005, 01:13 PM If you've got an aftermarket downpipe with a cut stock heat shield I'm willing to bet that you're hearing the heat shield. Mine does the exact same thing.
hwy61 08-25-2005, 02:07 PM I had to cut the upper heat shield too, to clear the exhaust downpipe. I then tapped on the cool heat shield with my hand. I kept bending it one way or the other or lifting a corner until noting rattled. Only cure I could figure as some of the bolt down tabs were sawn off in the process. hwy61
mkalbarc 08-25-2005, 04:44 PM my lgt has the same sound! I can hear through the pass window while I take off (gone when driving though) but my sound stays even after warm. It's kinda hard to explain... like a metal whirring sound, a high pitch tuning fork... very faint though. Car still drive like a charm though and I'm afraid that if I took it to the dealer they would just say they can't hear/dup it. Owell I'm still happy :)
2fas4u 08-26-2005, 11:18 AM Just noticed it on my 05 the other night after the car sat for a few hours. I do have an aftermarket DP, will have to check the heat shield...
NCWSTI 08-26-2005, 01:43 PM i had that same noise, just a little different description
i would hear it at low speeds but not at faster
ended up being my downpipe heatshield came loose and was rubbing on my front axel/driveshaft
i had to remove it cause it was tore up pretty bad
