Subaru Developing Variable Valve Timing Mechanism for SOHC Engines

Fuji Heavy Industries, in order to improve fuel consumption and reduce exhaust emissions, has decided to equip all of its cars with variable valve timing (AVCS). The valve timing mechanism, which maximizes both engine output at high rpms and daily driving fuel consumption efficiency, will be adopted into use on a full-scale basis, and will also reduce the impact that Subarus have on the environment.

Right now some of the DOHC engines are outfitted with AVCS, but the SOHC engines have not been given the same treatment. Subaru will develop AVCS for its SOHC engines and plans to equip all its cars with the variable valve timing mechanism.

Variable Valve Lift != Variable Valve Timing

Thanks for the link but this article is about valve timing, not lift.

Maybe for MY08 we will see AVCS in SOHC engines? If it's possible to increase the current 2.5L NA's ~170hp to, say ~200hp, while maintaining or improving the fuel consumption, I think that would attract more new customers to Subaru...which in turn would help our chances of getting a 'S' model here :)

I agree, timing and lift are two different matters.

I think it's more important to see 32mpg over 30mpg than to see a jump to 200hp personally. The majority of buyers of the 2.5L N/A engine is more concerned about fuel economy, especially in todays marketplace with fuel costs over performance. Leave that to the performance models.
