Whats the difference between the short throw shifters that the dealers sell, and the ones like from cobb and kartboy? The kartboy one is $175 and the dealers one is over $300, what exactly is the difference and what is actually needed to put a short throw in your car?

The name? The shifters in all of 7 cars I've owned worked fine, I never found a use for a shorter throw. My .02

To check out a Kartboy install, go to www.scoobymods.com (http://www.scoobymods.com)

It's all personal preference. When you get your new car, drive it and see how you like the shifter. My new RS is not too bad, if anything I may get some Kartboy bushings to get rid of some slop. But it's nothing like the 2 foot pole I had in my old 97 Outback Sport. Okay, not that long, but when I put the Kartboy in it, it was a major difference.

i think the kartboy is much lower than the STi shifter IIRC

Ok thanks guys I've read up on a lot of those links, from what I've seen, if you look at http://www.subaru.com/shop/accessories.jsp?year=2005&model=IMPREZA&trim=25_RS_SEDAN&category=PERFORMANCE there seems to be more parts in the picture of the short throw, then the kartboy. Is that shifter on that link the same shifter as the one's in STI cars?

kartboy owns all. the factory SS raises the shifter a little higher and it looks like a bus shifter. the factory SS is the entire shift linkage while the KB is just a shift lever.

so if I were to buy a new impreza, you would recommend just buying it with the normal shifter, then putting a kb in it?

Good=tall bus shifter? Most aftermarket short shifters are only made for WRX's without the factory short shifter, and they're a lot shorter throw, plus they're lower, so the shifter is more out-of-the-way.

I read all the reviews that said "like driving a new car" and crap like that. I gave it a shot--one of the local guys hooked me up with an extra one he had, plus bushings. When I first put it in, I noticed the difference when I really thought about it, but now that it's been awhile, I don't really notice it.

I wasn't expecting what the reviews said (new car, etc) but I was expecting more than I got. I'm not disapointed because I could tell the difference, but it surely wasn't drastic or amazing. I'm sure if I were to now drive a stock WRX, I could tell, but I don't think I'd sit there and go "DAMN" at the difference.

When did Kartboy go to $175? When I bought, the company wanted like $125 and I got an even better deal here.

Maybe he's talking about one of the packages deals - knob, shifter, bushings. For a start, you only really need the shifter.

But, come to a meet and test other cars out and see how the different setups work.

The kartboy both shortens the shift distance, and the lever length. The latter makes the shift knob further away (down). On top of this, because the pivot point of the shifter is changed, it takes a little more effort to get from gear to gear (even though it's a shorter distance). So, there's debate as to whether it makes shifting "better", again, it's all preference.

With my old car it got rid of the long sloppy bus shifter effect, so I liked it. Again, i'm not sure if I feel it necessary with the new RS. I put a Kartboy knob on it, and that alone lowered the shifter a bit. It's not high on my mod to-do list.

I think the Kartboy is one of the best cheap mods you can do to your Subie.
