View Full Version : Favorite late night drive around town (Anc)?
IndeSTi 08-28-2005, 06:39 AM Let me know if there is anything you recommend to check out. Here are some of my therapy sessions  . These are paved though...oh and of course be safe and I cruise these late at night so not a lot of traffic.
W. on 3rd ave (start anywhere) to the L st. -> Minnesota wrap to 100th. Left a 4way (Victor), test tires on merry-go-round, up Discover Heights (damn all lots filled no parking...) back on Victor/Klatt to Cst and Minn, take a right to Minn, all the way up O'malley and then I either break right or left depending on time. I also try to com back down O'malley to Old Seward so I can head to Dimond and hit the South Bound Seward highway on-ramp for fun (if no one in front of you of course).
Minnesota-> L st or Spenard to L st is also a fun corner.
Looking for anything maybe on the East Side (besides Stuckagain) or Eagle River, Chugiak.
thanks.
FrostyAK 08-28-2005, 06:46 AM Take New Seward south until you hit Rabit Creek, head up the hill taking a right on Goldenview. Go until you see the large walled community on your right (Spruce Point??), have a look around at the nice dreamable houses and great view of the citay if it is clear. Head out getting back on Goldenview and instead of taking a right, take a left back on to the dirt roads that head higher up. Enjoy.

bert_WRX 08-28-2005, 06:47 AM hmmm leaving anchorage towards potters marsh on the seward hwy if you're just lookin for pure speed
raspberry on to minn?
IndeSTi 08-28-2005, 07:17 AM Looking for whatever, nice to have different drives for:
Mood I'm in
Friends for a drive (corners+speed)
Romantic (views, talks) and I am not thinking of first date/showoff/f***ing drives, I know the way home already. :disco:
Those are some examples, I go for different lenghts of time so that affects some of the routes. I also prefer safe places to enjoy corners mainly and am not a straight line fan really, I respect it but not what I enjoy.
And maybe add a music preference in general or for the drives, some might be used to ephsize what kind of mood I shoud try it in or others taste in tunes. Thanks again.
Hmm new NIN, Game, Foo Fighters and The Blood Hound Gang (orig) is what I am heading out with now. Leaving in a bit and I may just try to head over to Gldenview after O'malley .There is a great sleding hill on 156th(i think that is it, I will check) errr, well it is actually the streets that lead from ther to Old Rabbit Creek road).
AK_2002_WRX 08-28-2005, 07:39 AM potter valley road if you wanna test your handling. international to minnesota on ramp if you wanna get your drift on:devil:
potter valley road too for drifting:devil: it is near a residential area, so watch out for cops sitting at the bottom.
the dimond to new seward on ramp is also fun to slide around on.
maybe i'll see u on the road IndeSTi.. gonna do some late night driving too:D
00Maddog 08-28-2005, 04:02 PM exit glacier road in seward for high speed thrills, 120+ easy, and if you wait until fall road is unmaintained/gated and of course out of city limits so troopers only:) part pavement, part gravel, love this road.
the jeep trail in seward for awd unbelievable action, up mount marathon! must have hacksaw to cut lock off gate;)
nash road in seward for high speed cornering and air in several turns, must do it early morning or night to avoid flashing lights
entrance to trail lake campground for rally-drift action, loose gravel tight corners
Crown point airport runway to pratice e-braking and being out of control at high speed. in the winter you can bounce off the snowberms on the sides with no damage;) have done countless 360's here.
skilak lake road is a gravel lovers dream, and of course it has two entrances too, cooper landing and sterling. hard to see other cars though, so much dust.
portage glacier road is awesome too, simply drive in, drive out, (then you know no cops are around;) ) and then drive in as fast as you want. see vettes out there doing this all the time. its a really fast road though, have to be 100 to 140 to be having fun.
seward and the peninsula with low populations and lots of roads = tons of sweet rally roads and little chances of getting in trouble, even when 100 over the limit on exit:)
since i've been in anchorage (2000) only road I've seen that compared is ekultna lake road, and there is still a ton of houses around there.
anchorage roads suck.
mvm42699 08-28-2005, 11:11 PM I've never thought about this since I'm really not from here but seems like a good idea...
IndeSTi 08-29-2005, 01:49 AM 00maddog, those are some nice spots to check out and thanks for sharing those. I haven't gotten my mind set on my rally drives and with not even being able to wax the car and no flaps I am sticking to the paved roads for now. I will save this thread for reference though =).
I am more of a soul cruiser, so to speak, for now. I am also just driving my car for the 20th day tomorrow and I am still learning the feel, especially during the 4000+RPM's.
If you have some more great, Flattop was mentioned earlier (with a look out) and Skyline in Eagle River (?). Take care and enjoy the drives.
02redwagone 08-29-2005, 03:49 AM - Highland Road (Highland exit before ER, right onto Highland Loop, next right on Highland Road. Ten miles of rollercoaster fun. (similar to Eklutna Lake Road)
-Baxter south from Tudor (A few miles of park land banking upward just before campbell creek canyon into a clusterfunk of suburbia at the base of Near Point Mountain)
- End of Dimond Blv. West ( Some strange houses, a nice hairpin turn in the middle of nowhere, and finally some nice rolling hills bringing you back to Sand Lake Road)
- Knik River Road Or whatever the fuk it's called... (New Glen north to Old Glen,
follow Old Glen until the bridge to Inbreedville, Take the right amid that last curve onto the bridge) Overall It's a boring road, but it facilitates alot of speed.
- Old Glen out of ER (Nice little road...reminds me of the movie Big Fish for some reason.) Very large rotted out boat on the right.(howd it get there?) Switchbacks down into Birchwood or Peters Creek (can't remember) Yes the house on pilings in the marsh must have some kind of code waiver or know someone...
OKRS25 08-29-2005, 07:14 PM - To the airport in a rental car, dropping rental car off, getting on airplane, never seeing Anchorage again..
I keed, I keed. Has it started to get cold yet?
- I always liked Skyline Dr. in Eagle River, nice view from the top.
akryder86 08-29-2005, 11:31 PM Skyline in Eagle River is lots of fun specially during winter  same with the road to eklutna. At about mile 7 on Eklutna road just gun it cause there are some rolling hills that are great :D Any roads up on hill side are great as well.
