View Full Version : so how much damage did i do to my engine this time?
i was on my way home and it was 3 in the morning. and decided i wanted to get home before breakfast. so i decided to do 100-110 all the way home from san fransico. this translates into driving for 3.5 hours @ 4k rpm. is it bad to have it be revving that high for that long?
and if you have a comment on how fast i was going i dont care to hear it. there was basically no traffic except for trucks in the slow lane.

4k doesn't really count as high revving.
You were only at 4k at 110??
well 110 was about 5k because i had to be on the gas a fair amount to keep it there. 100 wasnt too bad on the throttle. its a 4speed btw so the gears are different than you normal people with manuals
shemoves 08-28-2005, 04:10 PM Assuming your oil is in good condition, you should be fine. That is why many airplanes use Subaru engines, they are happy to sit at a decent rpm level for extended periods of time...well built, and the its the nature of a balanced, boxer design.
As far as your speed, be careful. Regardless of weather you want to hear it, you still need to...you are not the only one on the road.
Pat L.I. 08-28-2005, 04:50 PM is your car exhibiting some new symptoms that make you think something is wrong?
yes im bragging about a 140hp 4eat impreza L....im just wondering if this does any harm to the engine. if i hadnt explained why i had the rpm so high someone would have said "why didnt you upshift". the car seems fine. although ive only driven to taco bell and back since then.
cbr600f3 08-28-2005, 05:16 PM My XT turns over at 3500 rpms at 80 mph.
You are fine other than speeding you 3fast3furious3333333 you

lol... sorry i was a little harsh on my response, my apologies i edited it before you responded but i guess you had already seen it and were typing.
just keep an eye on it!
rabbitnutz 08-28-2005, 08:32 PM i've done it before with no problems, just make sure you're oil is in good condition and you're all set..
and BTW: 112 (top speed) is 4100 RPMs (go 4EAT!!)

oil was changed ~4000 miles ago. and before that like 6000. and you sure about that rpm @ 112 mph? i hit 5k when i pushed 110. although my tires arent stock size...
White 2.5rs 08-28-2005, 10:35 PM ha
my 3speed GL rolls at 5500 rpms or so at about 85
i drove the whole way to tacoma from yakima ~170 miles like this...that was 30k ago
StopSweatinMe 08-28-2005, 10:35 PM youre OK as long as you dont hit the rev limiter.
;)
kgb4187 08-28-2005, 10:39 PM Good thing we didnt hang out. You woulda had to go like 160 to make it back for breakfast.

i would have needed an srt-4 so i could teleport to IHOP
Guru Imakuni 08-28-2005, 10:55 PM svek. you need a new engine...something with vtec so you won't worry.

83Rabbit 08-30-2005, 03:09 PM 100-110 sustained on a public road. Wow, thats not too cool. But Im not gonna jack your thread and flame it.
4k isnt bad at all.
Try sustained 5-5500k when your doing upwards of 100 in a 2.08v Rabbit with a 4k tranny in it, damn the short gears lol. I never had a problem in VWs using the 4k and 2h short trannys. Id assume sustained 4k is nothing for a suby.
imprezkid 08-30-2005, 03:32 PM I tell u in my case at that kinda speed sittin on some 18's, thats about all she got captain.
Unless its a downhill :p

Matt Monson 08-30-2005, 08:23 PM So tell me what route you took that took you 3.5 hours from SF to Sacto at those speeds? Did you go through Fresno? I used to make freaking Sugar Bowl from Berkeley in less than 3 hours!!!
Not to worry, you did zero damage if your oil is good. I've driven my car that hard for 10-12 hours at a stretch before with no adverse effects...

i was driving from sf to AMADOR, not sac. my friend had to work the next morning so i had to drive him home. (we both used to live in amador, i moved out <1 week ago).
edit: i drove south on 4 for about half an hour instead of north so that put me out for an extra hour
Flip C 09-10-2005, 02:47 PM Well first I have to say F! off to all the flames about the speed.
Stupid A$$ American mentality. No common sense 9the flammers)
If there was no one on the road *** diff does it make?
I drive an average 90-100 every day to work/home on the interstate unless for some reason there is congestion. Even then the speed limit is 70. My car at 95 crusies quite nicely. I dont drive in the left hand lane. I use my single and I do my best not to pass on the right. Even though stupid people like these flamers drive at or under the speed limit in the left hand lane.
The bottom line truth is that accidents are cuased by people who arent paying attention. Be it cellphones , food, or just daydreaming. Now if he were intoxicated Flame away by all means. Note on that. The British DOT (what ever they are called) did a study to see whether or not they should add being stonded in the definition of "being under the influence". 1000 people were tested. A diverse group consisting of people who had never done the drug to those who were common smokers. The result was that EVERY person, while under the influence, actually drove BETTER. Why? Becuase they knew and concentratedon driving!
Fastest wreck I ever had - 164 MPH. Walked away bruised and batterd.
Worst wreck I ever been in - pulling into my driveway (10 mph?)- brakes locked up and I was thrown and slid 13 on face. Both were on motorcycles BTW.
You (the flammers) make this country weak.
BTSubject.
Shouldnt be any harm to your engine ever if you do regular maintainence.
Oil and Tranny Fluid (since your 4EAT) are the big ones. Coolant and diffrential fluid after that. Suspension and brakes after that.
limestoner 09-10-2005, 04:22 PM  be sure to call me when you're speeding 100 miles an hour while "stonded" you flammer!!!1
moogoob 09-10-2005, 06:07 PM i think the point is that person not paying attention pulls out in frint of you... while you going to fast.
I think people goping obscenely fast makes only you weak. Maybe ytou can walk away from a wreck, but how bout the others that are involved.
drive safely. :)

Hawk296 09-10-2005, 06:15 PM My imprezawith its outback tranny runs at 4k at normal highway speeds, really sucks for mileage, blazing through Utah i had to throttle back to keep is from hitting that stupid rev limiter in 5th. Wish i had a normal 5th gear...
2003Baja 09-10-2005, 10:14 PM damn the 4k limiter in a 4 eat
My 4-eat does 115 mph @ 4,100 RPM personally. I drove it like that for an hour to and from a friends house ONCE. I would be hitting 130 mph at 5,000 RPM on a down hill from time to time. (had a lil fun with an RX8). Just like a previous poster said....boxer engines are used in airplanes for there long time steady RPM state. All is good (cept now my tranny is blown from a defective planatery gear).
ballitch 09-10-2005, 10:44 PM i have to agree with flip C, speed up or get in the right lane you self-righteous sons a bitzes, why do you think the autobahn works so good, because people get the F**K out of your way when you come up on them doing 150 mph, and you have to be 18 to drive there, not to mention it costs like $1500 and like 45 hours of drive time before you get licensed. but back to topic.
no you didnt do any damage to your engine, unless you had a oil leak or bad bearings to begin with, but i would change my oil and tranny fluid and front/rear diff gear oil also while your at it, your car needs it anyway.
~Josh~
Davenow 09-11-2005, 12:48 AM  Why on gods greeen earth would you think that would hurt your car?
Cruise control set at 89mph for 4+ hours straight yesterday, no stops, only occasional slowdowns to @70mph I drove 10 and a half hours yesterday, I did 90% of that at 89 or higher.
That is the ONLY thing I liked about driving across Arkansas. Its long, straight, flat and almost everyone moves over when they see someone behind them.
cjfike 09-11-2005, 08:20 PM cell 13! great picture!
 Why on gods greeen earth would you think that would hurt your car?
 why on gods greeen earth are people still posting in this thread?
johnyungkim 09-12-2005, 02:18 AM I only drive that fast when im doing those long interstate drives that take like 5 hours.
completely deserted flat road in a straight. Especially at night, theres no cars 'cept those big rigs and since its a flat straight you can see traffic up ahead from MILES away... Every time I take those trips I drive roughly 100mph even. One trip I even did a sustained 130+ mph in my car for about 50 miles straight on and off. This bored porshe cayenne turbo suv kept lining up to me trying to race.
I remember I drove my friends newer Celica GTS at a constant 100mph on the same route. Upon coming to our destination, the engine didn't seem like it was doing so well. Whereas the wrx, even with driving excess of 100mph felt perfectly fine, just like the day I got her. Very solid feeling car at those speeds, imo.
00Maddog 09-12-2005, 03:01 AM whats cool about driving fast for a long time is how slow the speed limit feels when you slow down...:D
cjfike 09-12-2005, 12:06 PM  why on gods greeen earth are people still posting in this thread?
or they really don't have a life unless there is a wrench, steering wheel, or keyboard attached to it?
poormansporsche 10-04-2005, 07:52 PM I drove from stockton to LA in 3 hours and 20 minutes once (few years ago). Car was fine. I wasn't tho. You get super stressed when driving that fast. Especially down I-5. People pulling out in front of you and semi trucks everywhere. I'd never do it again.
I'd just changed the oil.
cheers
garrett
Handsdown 10-04-2005, 10:10 PM svek eats babies. i vote this thread be moved to OT.
