Is engine swapping a common thing in these cars? Can you drop an ej20tt into a car with a 1.8? Thanks.

Run a search on the conversions forum. Yes, what you mentioned is possible and has been done before. This is the wrong forum for this question.

Sorry, figured that was for other things. My mistake.

That particular swap is a bad idea, the twin turbo setup will take a lot of work to fit in a LHD car, but if you check out the stickies in the conversion forums you can learn a lot about the number swaps available for your car. Lots of options with any Impreza/Subaru.

you can basically swap any EJ series engine into an RS....so it all depends on time and $

you got lots of $ and a bit of time? go for the entire USDM STi drivetrain.....a decent amount of $ and some time ? version 7 drivetrain....and so forth all the way down to a 2.2 swap

Does the impreza have to be an rs? Most of the ones ive seen say l or ls.

No it doesn't have to be a RS...

Another good option if you don't have huge funds is the EJ22T motor with 2.5 heads and a different turbo. That should get you going for awhile...
