Has anyone had their MAF sensor die due to installation of a short ram? Mine is a real cheap piece that I picked up for about $120 from a company called ImportTech or something like that. It's just a 4" mandrel bent tube with a couple fittings for vac lines. I was short on funds at the time and just got excited over the idea of getting an intake. Anyway, I've blown 2 MAFs in the past 6-8 months because of it. It's only happened when I was WOT and nearing redline. Now I limit myself to about 4k RPM for fear of doing it again. Is the OEM MAF sensor so fragile that a cheap intake and velocity stack type filter can flow enough air to break it? I'm baffled really so any insight would be appreciated. Thanks...

i dunno, with my weapon R, i've never blown one, and my car is a 98 L... the '99s are kinda infamous for having MAF issues....but that just seems wacky, have you tried cleaning them at all ?

I've blown a few with my weapon r. 2 were before the recall, and the other one was my own fault. Me and my friend were in the mountains and I was behind him with the salt/water being flung up on my car, it blew and there was crap all over my filter from getting in somehow. Other then that I've been fine.

Even the recall ones are not good. It was still the same design. This is my 3rd one so far. I'm staying with paper filter now. '99s are the SUCK!!!

Lucky you, you probably got a LATE '99. Subaru sometimes does this to some of the cars.

Of course, mine has a MAP but it uses it for the calculations in the ECU. It still measures the air with the MAF.

yup my cali-spec 99 has a MAP too

theres gotta be something you can do to keep it from frying

speaking of which..what DOES a MAP do? right now mine is zip tied next to the filter..i didnt know if actually sticking it IN the tube would help (im not getting CELs tho)

Please explain to me what you're doing when you blow the maf's. What type of intake do you have, and how good is it mounted as in does it giggle around? Do you leave all your vents off all the time? I would like to figure out what's going on for you. Like I've said, I've only had one go on me since the recall and that was my own fault. Same with my friend who has the same set up. His blew because it rained over night when we were in the mountains and he forgot he didn't put his vent on over the intake and after driving for a bit it went.

All mine went when I was on WOT in 3rd gear. The filter was a floss sheet filter; gives good flow into engine. Either the temp changed too fast or dust got on it. Having DUST on it doesn't make it die, but I think sudden change in in temp or it not transferring enough voltage to warm it will make it die or something.

BUT paper filter for me from now on.

hmm...I boutght a weapon R hyper filter wich is a foam filter. I had a paper filter on there before. Sounds like to much dust was collecting on the filter. With the foam filters when you clean them you put the filter oil on it that that kinda catches the dust. Good luck.
