HOT off the press, Hot-Subaru is proud to announce the addition of smoked taillight kits for the new 06 Impreza WRX and STi sedans! Good news, due to a smoother taillight they are MUCH easier to install than our 04/05 Impreza smoked taillight kits!

As some of you may already know, we launched our clear headlight covers for the new 06’s last week. More good news, due to a much smoother design from Subaru for the headlight surface our covers are MUCH easier to install than the 04/05 Impreza’s. Saturday we installed some of the smoked headlight kits on the new 06 Impreza’s out in the lot.

Any pics of the smoke versus dark smoke versus stock taillights with the various lights on (taillights, brake, reverse)? I'm curious as to how dark these will make the lights (and if I'll get pulled over for having the covers on).

Subaru of Plano
09-26-2005, 04:55 PM
Thanks, the smoked tails on the black 05 are the standard smoke. It was a very bright day so they camera makes them look a bit brighter than they are. In the shade or less harsh light they do look a bit deeper.

The 05's are one of the harder installs - mainly due to the turn-signal wart. Our kit in a one piece kit (one of our competitors uses a three piece headlight) which may make it a bit harder to install but it looks way better when it it done. Due to this we include very detailed kit specific directions with both the headlights and taillights on the 04/05's

The 06's are much easier to install - both for the headlights and for the taillights. The headlights are even easier then the bug eyes!

There should be a HID Blue on White somewhere but I can't locate which thread it might be in at the moment, sorry.

Any chance of making red overlays for '06s?

Been asked this one lots of times. No red film available. You've seen red on thin window tint film and the like, but this is durable 17 mil stuff and they do not make it in red. Sorry.

that's odd...the thing also is that the 05 WRX fogs are so tiny so that's a bit steep for shipping. :( the box mine came in was surpisingly (sp?) large...i was like, what the heck did I order and then the 3m lens covers were in there, sort of rolled on the edges, but not really...

You'll find all shapes/sizes/colors/models HERE (http://hotsubarus.com/index.asp?PageAction=MFGSEARCH&ManfID=11&SetPageSize=25&Page=1)

Installation instructions included. 04/05 tails one of the harder ones to do because of the round protrusion but definitely doable as the pix will attest.

Just a quick reminder. All the kits listed on our site are sold as PAIRS. The last few emails we have had are customers asking about whether they need to buy two items (tails) in order to do their car. 1 kit = one for each side.

From the first page

The headlights are on the firs page too.

The smoked headlight kits will have the same effect on night vision as putting 30% window tint on the entire front windshield.

As we said, the standard smoke covers will have the same effect as putting 30% window tint on your entire front windshield. It is aimed at the track car / show car market.

Here are a couple from the archives. Both have smoke on the drivers side and nothing on the pass side. LGT also has GT Yellow fogs.

can you post a pic of the light smoke tails on a silver 06 wrx sedan please.

WRX_JUNKi

How do these hold up to freezing snow and carwashes? Since I go through a lot of both over here in NY. Don't mind spending money to protect them but wouldn't want them peeling after a couple of washes.

Subaru of Plano
02-18-2006, 02:11 PM
As the material is designed to protect first and look cool second they stand up just fine to both cold and car washes. You can wash the car 3 days after you install them - either by had or at an automated one. Obviously if you are using one of those blast a hold in you foot high pressure wands you don't want to aim it at the edge from an inch away...

Not sure about the 06 tails on silver, one of our customers might be able to help you out as we have had them available since Aug '05. On an earlier page there is a shot of a gray wagon with smoked tails and HID Blue headlights. Should give you the idea.

Let us know if you have any questions.

I tried to install the blue covers on my 2006, and had alot of difficulty. I followed the instructions, but just couldnt get the cover to fit over the bulge of the light. I will try again when it is a little warmer out, as it is about 55 today. I know the instructions say 60-90 degrees, but I couldnt wait.

Do you have any tips for getting the cover to fit over the bulge? Maybe a little warmer ambient temp is all I need. I just put the cover back onto the backing and will try again later.

Subaru of Plano
02-27-2006, 12:07 PM
Sorry to hear you had some troubles, 55 is a bit chilly but I can understand your excitement! You will need to warm the material with a hair dryer if it is chilly out. The material should be warm and floppy. We are not talking so hot you can't hold it, just warm and floppy. You might also try hot water in the spray bottle in addition to the hair dryer. Firm pressure with the squeegee and warm material and they go on quite nicely. Good Luck!

Well I got my full kit the other day. It was headlights, tail lights, fogs, and reflectors for an 02 wagon. I thought these were going to be more like covers or molded film or something, but they are just pieces of cut vinyl rolled up. They were completely flat so they take a bit of stretching to fit around big curves. Also, when I got them the way they had been rolled caused the paper and vinyl to seperate in a couple places. I don't know that it was a problem because of they way they were wrapped in plastic, but be careful that you don't set the rolled up pieces on the ground or something, they could get dusty.

I put on the fogs and reflectors with out too much difficulty, figured I'd start easy. The reflectors were cut a little off, I tried flipping and heating/stretching them but in the end it wasn't really enough. I finally got them set alright, but there was still a little orange on either the bottom or top corner, and got them pushed down pretty well. Fogs were cake and didn't matter as much since they were so far down. Next I did the tails. I mixed the slip solution just like they said to, but the cut was pretty far off and with the slip solution on its hard to get both sides to sit flat without one side peeling back up. I know they said they cut them a little big so you can trim it up but it seems like it was cut quite a bit too big on one part then small on another. After trying to move it around a bit with the solution I got it more or less how I wanted it and let the solution dry a little so it would stick. Even after an hour the top had lost too much adhesive and wouldn't stick. I realize this is probably all my own fault, but just a fair warning that this isn't that easy. I ended up just peeling off the fogs and reflectors since the tail light one was ruined and I really didn't feel like ordering another or driving around with 4/8 lights smoked. They do look really cool, and are apparently doable seeing all the pics and responses, but I'm going to try to find another way to do it. It seems like just ordering a sheet of vinyl would be about the same since you have to trim it anyways and this way you could make it fit perfectly before trimming. They also cost as much as a new intake for a full set.

Oh and just in case any one was wondering, I was in a heated garage with absolutely 0 wind. It was the most ideal conditions possible, and I read and followed the instructions to a T.

Subaru of Plano
02-27-2006, 06:19 PM
The 02/03 reflectors are harder than you might first think because you are covering 5 sides of a rounded cube with something flat. The initial alignment is critical given the small size.

The recommended 'slip solution' is just warm water.

The 02/03 taillights have a strong compound curve. At the middle of the taillight the top is a few inches in compared to the bottom of the light. If you simply lined up the starting point and laid the rest of the kit down then yes they are going to look off. The kit needs to be worked around the compound curve in small steps, pulling and prodding as necessary to maintain alignment. This is done to distribute the material along both the top and bottom edge. This allows the flat material to conform to the complex curve of the taillight. Gentle warming with a hair dryer helps things along if it is cool out.

Given the nature of the material and the wide variety of installation abilities (These are a DIY project after-all) some minor trimming is to be expected on some kits depending on installation alignment. Some kits do have a wider design tolerance than others. If the kit takes a lot of patience and was designed to very tight mm tolerances then almost everybody would feel they are too hard to align, so we give you some wiggle room.

If you do have the need for a 'do over' side we do work with you to get you covered so to speak.

Both the two smoked versions (along with all the colors really) are harder to photograph than one might expect. Both will look darker or lighter depending on the overall environmental lighting conditions. If you look at them in the bright afternoon sun on a cloudless day they will seem lighter. If you look at them in a lower light condition or a gray overcast day they are going to look a lot darker.

phoenix_wrx, what you are seeing in left over amounts of trace water from the application process. (Mainly a result of not using enough squeegee pressure while applying). It will evaporate over time as it cures. How long it will take will depend on the weather where you are. Hot, dry and sunny - the process goes quicker. Cold, damp and dreary - the process takes longer.

Just went through this thread... all I can say is that these things look great! I'm thinking about getting the yellow covers for my fogs and the standard smoke for my tails.

My only concern is legality in California. I see smoked lights on *tons* of cars out here, but after a brief search here and on Google, I couldn't find anything that said for sure either way. If someone could let me know about the legality of the smoked coverings on the tails, I'd appreciate it. If it's all good, I'm ordering 'em -- thanks!

Thanks ryde666 we aim to please. Thanks for posting the photo!

ghibli99 can't give a definitive comment on the ultimate legality, but I can say we send a lot to CA. Usually the easiest place to look is under the vehicle inspection criteria for your particular area.

Good Luck!

GioGdf the current website has one 'item' for headlights and one for 'taillights'. Each have list the starting price when looking at the product thumbnail. Once you open the item and select your particular vehicle from the drop down the price changes based on the application. Some are more or less than others. Hope that helps.

Select your model and year from the drop down and you will be good to go. The bug eyes all use the same headlight kit no matter the market.

Vypurr, I would be sure to read the directions and not try to install them like a sticker. ;)

Our material and application process does not involve soap of any kind. We have comprehensive instructions included with each kit, and each order that needs a squeegee includes a professional grade squeegee at N/C.

Good Luck with the installs and let us know if you have any additional questions.

PM sent.

And for those doing your weekend installs.

FYI. Installing these with the lights not installed on the car can double the difficulty level. I have done a few off vehicle displays, and they do take more effort and patience. It is important that the surface and surround areas be squeaky clean, so the adhesive has a good surface to grab. It is important to keep in mind that you are installing something that starts out the day flat onto a surface with a compound curve. As you get to the edges you are going to have 'fingers' of material that are lifted up due to the curvature of the lens, this in normal. It is important to bend the squeegee to match the bend of the light and press and hold firmly until it stays down. Gentle warming (and drying the edge) with a hair dryer can help speed things along. You can also wrap the squeegee with a lint free detail cloth to help wick moisture away. I installed the same clear kit on one of our service writers WRX this spring (cold for TX). Being that it was chilly it did take a bit more patience holding pressure on the edges. Patience and pressure on the squeegee are your friend.

Good Luck with your installs!

Subaru of Plano
07-24-2006, 11:26 AM
Glad to hear you got them on! Given that you installed 95% then removed and then re-installed you may have some disturbances in the adhesive. These tend to diminish over time as the adhesive sets and the water evaporates.

I would love to purchase these but the justification doesn't seem to be there. You guys have these on sale for 50 bux + shipping. But they retail at almost 90 bux. For 90 bux i can have my taillights shipped to someone to have them spray on tinted and cleared. The thing about the spray on tint is if they get scratched, its just like paint, you can buff it out, well hopefully. With these, it seems if they get scratched or torn you will have to buy a new set because i'm sure you won't just ship 1.

How prone are they to peeling? I'm scimming thru the thread so i probably missed it.

Subaru of Plano
08-21-2006, 01:11 AM
Yes paint is an option when it comes to smoking your tails. Prices can range from a little for some paint and what ever you think your weekend is worth to paying big bucks for a quasi powder coat. It is a relatively perm solution and one that tends to block more light and is MORE prone to damage. Scratch a painted lend and it tends to flake and the repair is a re-paint. Plus if at some point down the road you decide you want to sell your car and the next guy doesn't like your paint job you can't just peel it off and be done with it.

As for singles, yes we do offer them to our customers on a special basis. Anything from an install issue to sliding into a tree doing your best Petter slide.

We use a tough material and I can't imagine how it would ever get torn in every day driving. These are not ebay specials made from tissue paper thin sign vinyl :D

Hope that helps. There are lots of options out there, go with the solution that best suites your needs and desires.

Good Luck with your wagon!

Thanks for the reply. I understand the easy to remove part if i need to and thats convenient. I don't plan on and my wife won't let me getting rid of the WRX, I had to get rid of a car that i loved for this one and i had good reason too. 2 kids and a 2 door golf R32 don't mix well, but the WRX has made it an easy transition and i couldn't be happier.

I'll weigh my options but i'll probably go ahead and purchase these just to see how they are. Do you have any type of coverage for these things if they just start peeling with in the first couple of months to a year?

Do you want some pics from after the install? I'll be decently modded in a few weeks and they should tie everything in nicely with what i'm doing.

The film doesn't have a warranty on it, because there are so many variables as far as the installation of the film. For example, if you use soapy water to install the film, it wont adhere to the light or if you don't clean your hands and the headlights well before applying the film it wont stick correctly. It is with these things in mind that we don't offer a warranty. As long as you follow the directions completely you shouldn't have any problems.

The smoke headlight film will diminish the output of the headlights, because essentially you are tinting them. The HID Blue versions shine bright white, while our GT Racing Yellow will shine bright yellow. Let me know if you have any questions.

Select the color you would like from the color drop down box.
Select "(ROUND NOT COVERED) Impreza RS / WRX / Sti SEDAN 2004-2005" in the model drop down box and you are good to go!

These are significantly easier than our full coverage 04/05 taillights as the hardest part of the install (going over the round) has been eliminated.

The headlights, taillights, and fog lights are built single items (one item for all colored headlights), the site calc's the price based on the year and model selected. Sorry for any confusion.

I went through all of the pages and some of the tinted tails you can see through and some are completely dark, even the ones that say stealth smoke some are see through and throughout the whole thread about three of em are completely dark, is there somethin they're doin differently to get em darker?

The one with the round not covered is done in the dark Stealth Smoke. The 06-07's are more chrome like while the 04-05's are bight red, so what the same material looks like on each gen will look different as they are transparent. Also the colors / tint level is highly dependant on overall lighting, the angle of the light, its strength, and the location of the camera. On a gray depressing winter day they are going to look darker than on a bright sunny summer day with the sun shining right on them, no matter the application. Hope that explains it. Let me know if you have other q's

So for an '06 model, the price would be $49.95 + shipping? Why is the shipping so high when I do a quote? Is there a lot to this kit that makes it large or heavy? Sorry for all the questions, but shipping just seems kind of steep for just two films. Thanks.
