View Full Version : max frustration part eleventy billion...need help!!!
mrsaabaru...pt duex! 08-30-2005, 09:21 AM the engine was bad before i got it. i have a dealership that sells saab and subaru, glassman in southfield, mi, telling me that the engine is basically rusted from the inside out like it came from a car with flood damage or something. maybe it sat out in the rain in a spokane, wa, junkyard or something. on top of that, my old screenname is malfunctioning too, just like my car :(
anyway...i'm coming from an N/A 2.5...I avoided an ej257 swap/build-up because of the trouble involved. now i've spent enough money either way, so i'm stuck with the car anyway. and i'm having trouble even the way this is...so i'm gonna do it this time.
i need to know from those who have been there...what is the cheapest way to get all the parts needed to turbo the new block...and do i need specifically the intercooler right away? I'd need an FMIC, cause i have no hood scoop.
Does anyone have a favorite vendor/friend with used parts for the turbo stuff? I'm gonna bolt on as much of my top end as will fit and upgrade over time. I know where to get the shortblock. with just the shortblock i don't need wiring changes do I? I already pulled the engine by myself before, so i know i can do it again...
thanks for the help
supermoose 08-30-2005, 11:38 AM hey-
you have the most confusing posts ever. what car are you working on? get a hood scoop. they're easy to come by - i have a spare in my garage actually
what the heck are you trying to do?
do you drive a saabaru or som other random subaru.
you crazy.
kinda tough for an aluminiunmininim block to rest eh?
Hurley 2.5 WRS 08-30-2005, 06:46 PM i would imagine so..... SOA yay
so, we need clarification
mrsaabaru...pt duex! 08-30-2005, 07:20 PM cliff's notes: i'm looking for a shopping list for putting an ej257 short block plus a budget(homemade, used or otherwise) turbo kit into basically an '05 n/a impreza, and with it being so new, have no advice to turn to.
yes, i drive a saabaru. 2.5 liter n/a. i took the engine completely out of the car and put it back together with my own two hands, so i saw with my own two eyes that the subaru and the saab are the exact same car except for the headlights and the seat covers. i got a used engine to replace one that was messed up, and put it in myself, working countless hours after work everyday, and i'm no master mechanic so everything took twice as long. the used engine was also bad. i got the auto parts store to refund the money. but i've already invested enough in labor so that i can no longer afford to get rid of the car. i've invested enough in frustration that, since i'm stuck with the car anyway, i might as well get what i want. so i want to do an ej257 swap and turbo kit.
since i have an 05 saab 9-2x, hood scoops and hoods are not everywhere like you suggest. so i must get an FMIC. i would also like to put together a turbo kit myself, but don't know what to do, and since my car is so new, everyone is more interested in the back story than actually helping answer my questions. i have a new car that i haven't driven in a month, despite dozens of hours of labor, thousands of dollars, and countless posts. i'm not even closer to an idea of what to do.

so... you paid for your own labor??
FMIC are expensive. a dealer will have a hood and scoop most likley for less. also, look around in junkyards nationwide. (call/email)
still confused, need periods.
Zephyr 08-31-2005, 05:13 PM Very confusing post.
It is an 05 Saabaru? Didn't the car come with a warranty? Get the car to run properly, trade it in and get something that is turboed from the factory. There is no such thing as a cheap turbo kit and doing a swap on such a new car is totally pointless.
Just my $0.02

I couldn't get the engine i put in working, so i had a dealer check it out. they charged 800 dollars to get the thing taken apart, just to tell me the engine is ruined. Plus the water pump, radiator and thermostat went because of the engine over heating. plus rental of the engine hoist, time missed from work = shorter paycheck, so yes, i did invest too much money. I can't get a hood scoop for this car from a junkyard. i've been looking for a lot of these parts. they all reply the car's too new.

the reason i don't have a warranty to cover this is well documented in previous posts...and i don't see how its directly related to my question anyway...and it's also related to why i'm having trouble getting the car to run properly...And since i have no warranty, and a big hole in my engine bay, and can't find a used engine, and a new one is $7000, i don't see how a swap is such a waste of time.
Look, i understand that there is no 'cheap' way to do what i want. I'm merely asking for advice making it as inexpensive as possible. if some part is $800, but someone knows a used one is just as good for 500, that's the kind of thing i'm asking for. also, since this is the conversion thread, and i'm about to start shopping, yet all i know is uppipe, downpipe, turbo, catback, intercooler, engine management, i figured somebody could help me out.
Generally, around here, some people get all the help they want for being unique. Other people get treated like they're stoopid for asking the same questions as wasting their money and/or time.
Zephyr 08-31-2005, 10:59 PM Like I said before, pick up a used engine that you know is in good shape, install it and get rid of the car as fast as you can.

americanyouth 08-31-2005, 11:47 PM Why did the car stop running in the first place? Why wasnt the car covered under warrenty?
