View Full Version : Stromung dual-tip
Poppa smurf 08-19-2001, 03:46 AM I just installed my Stromung dual-tip midpipe and Borla Gen3 headers and woohoo does it make a difference. I went to my girlfriend’s house too pick here up and she got in the car and I started it and she was said I thought that was a mustang that just went by. Nope little old me in my Impreza. I love the deep throaty sound gets constant looks from everybody who hear’s it. Its really not too annoying cruising on the highway but I have some dynamat layed down in the back so that may take away from the rumble. Kronkiler and bugbomb installed them in about 1.5 hours in there drive way (I really appreciate it) and fitting didn’t seem go much of and issue. Highly recommended if you don’t want the ricey sound and they looks. Wish my random technologies cat were here in time though. Oh well new project for next weekend I guess.
ThinkTank 08-19-2001, 04:19 AM What does the random technologies cat cost? Where do you get it?
I wonder if this combination from engine to tail is a bolt -on for 2002 RS2.5?
Poppa smurf 08-19-2001, 11:26 AM What does the random technologies cat cost? Where do you get it?
this is where (http://www.racesearch.com/CGImp/mhp?man=2141;sort=PART%23;sub_cat=0;engtype=0;Try% 20Again=Try%20Again;mode=sbpn;cat=607;pn=;page=4) i got the Cat. it cost alot but if you going to do it you might as well do it right.
gasser 08-19-2001, 06:51 PM It's never going to get here.:(
ThinkTank 08-20-2001, 05:34 AM I get a page list of parts with many different prices?
Poppa smurf 08-20-2001, 12:10 PM Sorry the part number is Part number 822504.
DanzBorin 08-20-2001, 01:22 PM The page doesn't have 822504 and if you hit next, you definately don't get it. I'll try a search.
Rob
Poppa smurf 08-20-2001, 01:28 PM sort by part number and its on page 5 second one down

DanzBorin 08-20-2001, 02:19 PM Will that work on 2 1/4" exhaust?
STiShawn 08-20-2001, 06:37 PM Agreed Stromung and Borla header make a fabulous sound! Now If I can get a new motor I can hear it again.....sniff sniff....thrown rods suck....
Xybermage 09-06-2001, 09:40 PM I too just put on my Stromung dual tip. It's great. I love the way the dual tips fill up the cut out on the bumper. E-mail me if you want to hear a sound clip.
Yeoman 09-10-2001, 03:37 PM I hope you guys got the stainless exhausts. I didn't and now its completely fugged. All corroded and theres a crack in the part right between the tips (less than a year!). I called where I got it and they said they know about this problem which is why they don't carry it anymore. I lose again!
ImprezaRS dot com 09-11-2001, 03:24 AM Gordon, Glad you like the setup. Thanks for buying from me!
I like the Stromung combined with Borla Headers much better than the Borla catback. And, yes, he did get the stainless, which ships a lot quicker than the mild steel anyways.
I'd be happy to help anyone else considering this combination of parts, which I sell off my site.

asusimpreza 09-16-2001, 01:37 AM Crap!! I got the mild steel Stromung. Yes...I should kick myself for not getting the SS...but I was low on cash. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from rusting??!! Maybe if I sprayed it with WD-40 every morning before school?
Ben T.
ImprezaRS dot com 09-16-2001, 03:01 AM The WD-40 trick might work. Or call your GF and ask her to give up the vaseline

PS: Did I just say that out loud?
WHTWRX 07-10-2002, 01:33 PM Took delivery of my car with the Stromung Turbo/Cat back and dual tip exhaust. I don't even listen to my radio anymore cuz I like to just to the car as I drive! It sings at 6000rpm!

Does anyone else have any reviews of this exhaust on the 2002-03 wrx?
I'm highly considering this for my sedan. I want a clean rumbly sound without being too loud. Sound quality is important. I like the prodrive, just I'd rather go dual tip stock look.
If anyone has sound clips, that would be a mega-bonus, as I can't seem to find any.
Thanks. :D
Aerosim Research Ltd 02-03-2004, 09:12 PM Scott at Stromung said they haven't made a mild steel exhaust in over a year. They've gone with stainless steel now.

Uncle Scotty 02-04-2004, 04:53 AM Yep....all SS now....I love my 3" with single tip(tip is 3.5")....
Everybody that hears it either wants one or gets one:D
peterex 02-05-2004, 11:58 PM I've had my dual-tip Stromung axleback for almost a year now. It looks great and is the perfect muffler for the practical person. The sound is fabulous - the perfect mixture of sedateness and excitement. Quiet when you want it to be, yet rumbly when you get on it. Plus, the quality of the stainless muffler is quite good. I purchased my axleback second-hand, so it is probably almost two years old, yet it looks like new after a car wash. Great product.
any pics of it installed?

ive had my stromung catback 2.5" dual tip for about 3 months now and i can honestly say that i dont think there is another catback out there with the same awesome combination of quality, fit, look, sound, and price. although id like to try the scoobysport.... anyway....
it looks stock, but slightly bigger and its stainless. its tucked right up against the bumper, but not too high and out. perfect fit. better fit than the stock exhaust. and the sound, geez! i had an sti guy tell me how much he loved the way my car sounded! i was like, dude your car sounds the best w t f you talking about. and thats all ive done engine-wise. the sound is unmatched! kinda burbles at low rpm and does not drone on the highway. with the windows down you could really hear it, but with the windows up you barely notice, its just a slight rumble. not even close to being *loud*.
makes me want to get the 3" downpipe with div wg. :D
thanks to AEROSIM RESEARCH in Costa Mesa for hooking me up. they had a Stromung group buy, i missed it  but i dont know if its still going on. call kym.
jcwrx 02-11-2004, 01:01 AM YinUCSD,
Are you running OEM uppipe and down pipe? This really peaks my interest in the Stromung system. I am thinking of going Stromung TBE with the new Stromung DP. Thank for any more information.
JC
YinUCSD 02-11-2004, 02:31 AM i am running oem up-pipe and downpipe. i have yet to change them. i am waiting for a gutted oem uppipe to arrive and im going to purchase the 3" downpipe from stromung with divorced wastegate. im wondering if that one piece alone (downpipe) will increase the noise that much more since the 2nd cat is going to be gone... oh i am going to be keeping my 3rd cat on there. i just dont see myself going catless ever. its the hippy in me. ;)
jcwrx 02-11-2004, 03:59 PM Yin,
The system will be louder w/o cat 1 & 2. The question remains, how much louder? I am trying to go stealth with this system. I'm not 19 anymore and trying to turn heads. I want a system that sounds like a boxer without drawing the attention of everyone on the street, and I do not want the system to drone on the highway.
Is there anyone else out there only running one cat in their Stromung set up? What are your sound levels like? Wagon or sedan?
JC
Uncle Scotty 02-11-2004, 05:49 PM If you go 2 1/2" with one cat you will be just about right.
I have a catted Perrin DP and 3" out the back with a single tip and THAT may be a bit loud for you at WOT, but with the smaller pipe I think it would suite you. Mine NEVER drones, and intake and tire noise is louder on the road at 75mph.
jcwrx 02-11-2004, 06:15 PM Scott,
You are running the Stromung 3" single tip catback off off your Perrin DP?
Thanks for the advice. For some reason part of me still wants to go 3". I just can't get that out of my head. Like I said before I have no intentions of a larger aftermarket turbo. Maybe 3" exhaust just comes off the lips better, I don't know!

Uncle Scotty 02-11-2004, 07:04 PM Yes I have the 3" single tip and I get nothing but compliments on the way my car sounds, and I'm a bit older and I wanted to make sure I got the 'no fartcan' sound....I got exactly what I wanted and if I elect to install the new Stromung divorced wastegate DP that I have....I think it will sound just pure evil:devil: The hunduha boiz will run for cover, between that and the noise of the P&P TD05:eek:
 Do it....just do it.....3 inch...mmmm....
jcwrx 02-11-2004, 10:45 PM :D :)
Oh wow, that post it to funny. How loud is your system? Is there anyway you could e-mail me a sound clip? I am by no means opposed to the rumble of the boxer4, but I heard the new Perrin TBE last weekend and it is freakin' loud. I mean it sounds sweet, but there is now way in hell I could put up with that on a road trip, or everyday driving. Thanks for the reply Scott.

Uncle Scotty 02-12-2004, 03:58 AM You can't even hear mine in the car on the highway, unless you go WOT, and then it isn't loud enough to be remarkable...unless you are in a tunnel.
Under 4k rpm....it is just a nice burble and over 4k it gets progressively louder.
There is a site with clips on it that I'll look for....
OK...register at wrxfanatics.com and in the 'engine/drivetrain' forum there are soundclips.....the Cobb is made by Stromung...it is a pretty good clip, although the low 'bup-bup-bup-bup' is kinda hard to duplicate....sounds a lot like mine, really...even the little 'pop' as it comes back past 1500 or so.....
jcwrx 02-12-2004, 12:40 PM Tx Scott I'll check it out.
JC
Found the thread on WRXfanatics, the Stromung sounds good. Interior sound is quite low, and exterior sound is angry.
Scott, do you know if that is a catless system or not? It didn't say in the thread.
You know I really like the vishnu TBE, and have for a long time, but the cost just kills me.
JC
Uncle Scotty 02-12-2004, 04:37 PM One of my redneck friends said my car sounded like "a real angry (VW) bug"....
This much quieter than the Vishnu...that clip was with the door of the car open, I think.
I'm sure you would be happy with it...

jcwrx 02-14-2004, 03:28 AM Damn Sexy! :)
Kym,
Can I get a nice sound clip? I am really, really torn between the Stromung TBE, or the Borla catback with Stromung DP. The Borla is a nice value, and keeps the system quiet, which is what I'm looking for, but that Stromung exhaust is nice :disco: :disco: .
Uncle Scotty has posted many times that his Stromung system is not loud, but I listened to a short sound clip of the Cobb catback and it had a pretty aggresive sound, possibly more than what I am looking for. I really want an exhaust that will have good tone(showing off the boxer rumble and uniqueness) without increasing the volume of the system more than say 100 dbl's. Is this at all possible, or am I dreaming.
I will be running only the 3rd cat. I'm thinking of going 2.5" becasue I do not plan on going any aftermarket turbos. The most I would do turbo wise is a deadbolt monster TDO4 w/ P&P. Any insight will be helpful. I really want this new exhaust, but I won't purchase it until I am sure of the exhaust I want. I only want to purchase an exhaust once and be happy with it. Thanks in advance.
JC
Uncle Scotty 02-14-2004, 04:30 AM I think that clip was catless on an STi... it was louder than on my car....the comparison of the sound is the same...not the volume of it...

Hm... I might have one. Shoot me an e-mail and remind me, and I'll attach it to my reply.

It's not loud. It has a really nice low idle rumble.
Simple rule: Plan on going to 300hp or more? 3".

jcwrx 02-14-2004, 03:54 PM Kym- you've got e-mail.
Scott- thanks for the clarification. I noticed the file name was sti...but wasn't sure what that ment.
I'm leaning towards the Stromung system. Still can't decide if I want to go 2.5" or 3".

jcwrx 03-08-2004, 09:54 PM This quote says it best. I just installed my stromung dual tip catback. I am running a 2.5" sytem, and the sound is perfect for me. Low rumble at low RPMS, but an aggressive snarl at WOT. Great product......Now for the Stromung down pipe:devil:

Alizarin 04-03-2004, 07:24 PM Installed the stainless catback w/ dual tip today plus 3rd cat eliminator pipe (all 2.5" piping). Holy cow! The car sounds so mean now. Who needs a stereo anymore when you got that lovely music behind you?
Its definately a quality product, and the fitment was spot on. Definately worth the cash. Installation really helps if you have somebody else to help. My dad kept saying to have it professionally done, but we did the whole install in about 2.5 hours if you don't include our lunch break.
Edit action: I got some of the pics off my digicam in case some of you want to see it installed:

Suby1128 05-19-2005, 04:28 PM bump for an old thread! I have a Helix Uppipe, Stromung shorty DP, and have left the stock midpipe with third cat. Have the STi 2.5" Catback on my car, but am really interested in the Stromung axleback. How is the Stromung going to compare to the STi catback? I'm looking for something a little bit louder but not too loud, and I like the stock look.
Thanks,
Craig
i have a stromung axle back. about the same level of noise as the SPT exhaust my friand has. similar sound but i like mine better. my other friend has a stock STi. my car is noticeably louder than his. mine sounds much more aggressive and meaner than his. doesn't sound like a honda or anything like that. i love it.

thats funny. i went from the stromung catback to the stock sti catback. i think you will like the stromung if a bit louder and stock looking is what you are looking for. i like the sti exhaust because it is quiet, and still pretty free flowing. but imo the stromung flows better. i miss the look of the stromung, but it was a tad too loud for me. its borderline but yeah.
