Hello all.

My brother just acquired a 99 impreza L and his
EJ22 died after a month of him buying it (180k). We found a
good price on a 2000 EJ25 (I believe its SOHC). Will this be
an easy install for a mechanic to perform. There are no
accessories on the engine that we found (2.5) but they were working
on the broken EJ22 are they all interchangeable?. One mechanic (non subaru specialist I may add) said we needed the ej25 harness and ecu for it to run
smooth but then wiring it would be a major pain am I correct in assuming this?

I read supermooses thread on the conversion but that was into a 93 L which was obd-ii and maybe a whole different animal. Any help on this forum or calling me would be greatly appreciated since he has no transportation besides getting rides from different people to and from work.

Sincerely,
Jay K

if the EJ25 is also from a my99 then iirc what he can do is install the ej25 and plug it right in assuming he can get ahold of a 99 ecu also to controll it which should also plug in. And yes all the parts such as the powersteering/alternator/and ac condersor will be interchangeable.

Hmmm interesting, so I could swap a 99+ RS engine into my 01 L without wiring a damn thing. Just change the ECU. Sounds too good to be true if you ask me

k so all i need to know about the wiring is get the pinout diagram for the 99 2.2 ecu and the 2000 2.5 ecu (which i already have)

Anyone have a 1999 2.2 ecu diagram?

Given that the 2.2 had the same size injectors as the 2.5, it would probably run quite well off the 2.2 ECU. Just reuse all of your sensors and TB, make sure both engines have the same ignition reluctor (the plate behind the crank pulley).
IIWY I'd just unbolt the intake manifold complete and swap only the longblock underneath it.

thats would be my advice, to avoid any complications, just swap in the short block. reusing the ej22 intake manifold and heads should avoid any complications if the pin outs are different, which on a subaru...

^^ No need to swap heads. The cam position sensors are identical, the manifolds swap straight over, and the 2.5 heads flow much better anyway. He can keep all his harnesses stock, so no worries about the pinouts. PnP.
