Hi everyone, I'm looking for some info on Subaru manual transmissions for a car I plan on building.
What I want to know is if it is possible to somehow eliminate the rear output shaft from a Subaru manual transmission, and make it 2WD only.
I am wanting to make a small kit-car like vehicle, and plan to make it mid-engined. The subaru engine would be really nice being a boxer for low center of gravity, but there's that pesky AWD aspect in the way, since the only thing behind the transmission in the car I want would be the rear bumper.
I am looking at using an engine/transmission from one of the mid 80's Subarus, because they are readily available for very little through salvage yards, and aren't too big. I know that Subaru did make FWD cars back then, but they are pretty hard to come by, so I wanted to know if I could convert one of the AWD ones, since they are all over.

I'd recommend a Porsche tranny instead. I'm not sure if you can safely eliminate the driveshaft.

not sure about what sort of engine you plan on having in front of this transmission, but as long as it wasnt a 250-300hp beast, look into getting a 5 speed from an early 90's FWD impreza if you are using an EJ series engine. hooking up the shift linkage might be a little tricky though.

Ya i would recommend the Legacy FWD trans also. Its stronger then the Impreza FWD trans and uses the same size input spline as all AWD subys. Its easier to get a good clutch for it.

cheap engine could be an RS or turbo legacy engine and find any fwd impreza or legacy (preffered as explained above)....
you can make an AWD drive tranny FWD too....shiv did it and explained it in SCC...for the project 2.5RS car...I believe the center diff was welded solid and the driveshaft was disconnected
