Kostamojen 09-02-2005, 12:51 AM http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/search.php?searchid=2553016 chevelle100 09-02-2005, 01:00 AM Thanks, I did a search, but couldnt come up with anything useful. supermoose 09-02-2005, 11:26 AM you should learn to use the search button. and if it dont work the first time u try, try harder. Kostamojen 09-02-2005, 07:10 PM http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/search.php?searchid=2553016 Sorry, I think I copy/pasted something wrong... Anyway, just search for "RWD conversion" in the Transmission forum. chevelle100 09-02-2005, 08:07 PM 15 year old boys should learn to use the search button. and if it dont work the first time u try, try harder. Well, old man, I did in fact use it, I didn't think to use conversion, I simply used rwd. Let me know if you need help crossing the road. supermoose 09-04-2005, 12:14 AM perhaps. perhaps ill ask when i need to cross hte road next time. id ask you to walk me hoem from teh bars, but u cant get in.. chevelle100 09-04-2005, 01:02 AM I have no desire to drink. supermoose 09-04-2005, 05:01 AM you shouldnt. you're 15. end of discussion. chevelle100 09-04-2005, 01:42 PM I mean, I never will drink. My grandfather just died from it, and I don't think that's a direction I'd like to go. How old are you, anyway, since you seem to have an attitude toward me solely because of my age? wrx_driver_2002 09-05-2005, 03:45 AM Can you change these cars to rwd safely and easily? Thanks. Yes, You can safely (well, depending on how you drive) and easily (if you're good with a wrench) convert your Manual transmission subaru to rear wheel drive. Here's some good information about how to weld the center diff. http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27532 Here's what a welded center diff looks like http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/1774/dsc02603medium9pq.jpg http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/7243/dsc02602medium9we.jpg I just got done doing this same conversion to my car. I wanted to know what a RWD Subie felt like, and it's definately different. If I step on the gas at all going around a corner, the rear end comes out... I have no traction through 1st and 2nd gear... I'm going back to AWD in a week or so. Here's my Legacy on the lift while I was rebuilding the transmission... Broken 2nd gear... http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/882/dsc02582medium2se.jpg Engine Side: http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/6084/dsc02595medium0fa.jpg Now with a Rear 3.7 Clutch Type LSD from a 1986 RX: http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/9234/dsc02589medium8tf.jpg supermoose 09-05-2005, 05:38 AM sick. so u figured out how to make the clutch LSD work. roxor. how'd u end up doing it? wrx_driver_2002 09-05-2005, 12:45 PM Well, My transmission was built to have a 4.11 Final Drive. I was using the 1991 Turbo Legacy transfer case, but I picked up a spare WRX transmission, so I used the transfer case off of the WRX. The transfer gears in the wrx are 1.1:1 (WRX's use a 3.54 rear diff, and with the center gears being 1.1:1 it works out to 3.9 for the final drive) instead of 1:1 like every other subaru transmission. So with the 1.1:1 gears in the center and the 3.7 in the rear, that should put me around 4.05 or so for the final drive. How I made the rear diff work was I just bolted the whole thing in the car, changed axles, and changed the flange that the driveshaft bolts to. At least subaru's are like Lego's :) Here's a peak inside that rear diff: http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/2219/dsc02573medium7ys.jpg http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/1452/dsc02572medium4ee.jpg supermoose 09-05-2005, 12:55 PM word. clutch pack diff looks neat. i was pondering that calculations to be about 4.05 or so, its happy with the 4.11? chevelle100 09-05-2005, 01:41 PM How did you blow second? You didn't have any problems with parts not in the rear end not liking 50% more power? wrx_driver_2002 09-05-2005, 02:38 PM I don't know how I blew it. I assume it was from shifting too fast or that time I was playing around in a wet parking lot... Going from all 4 wheels slipping, to having traction tends to break things. The rear stuff seems to be handling it alright. I have no idea what the long tern effects will be, but I guess i'll find out. I've been extremely nice to it. I still have to get used to RWD. if I was running in AWD, the rear diff would have to be a 4.11. Without running the front wheels, the final drive doesn't matter to the transmission. THey only thing it matters to, is the speedo gear which is why I wanted to get as close to a 4.11 as possible (so my speedo would be somewhat accurate). The speedo is ran off of the 3/4 driven gear. The way the center diff is running, it's not sending any power to the front wheels. I've still got the front axles in there and everything. chevelle100 09-05-2005, 06:09 PM So you're changing back? Just because of traction purposes or are there others? Mostly, I went RWD to see how my car would handle it. It handles it fine, although when I'm alone in the car, it looses traction about 5k (and full boost) in first gear, and almost all of second gear (Again, at full boost), and finally catches traction in 3rd. Although I've never dumped the clutch or tried a burnout. I'm going to put a 6 speed in the legacy with a Ver2 DCCD controller. I should have all of that done in a couple of weeks, when I have time to pull the current tranny, and add the 6 speed. I wonder if any other BD legacys are running 6 speeds :D Although, I will say the donuts in the empty parking lot were alot of fun :) chevelle100 09-08-2005, 10:14 PM for being 15, you have really good imagination in insults. quoted from an email with the message title 'idiot" "Stop posting crap you dumb gook, you dont know anything about cars" thats all you have to say eh? with a brilliant approach to a differing opion (and very possibly correct by popular vote), I hope this openminded thought will help you in your aspirations to.... not flunk outa high school by the second year?? perhaps you randomly sent me a hate email because you were frustrated that you hadn't really cleared puberty yet and were wondering why not washing your face enough made it ugly as hell, OR perhaps just other random frustrations. this is a public forums. we talk about cars. perhaps opionated people hang out here and post ideas, but its a public forum. all the people with a specialist title and conversion forum whore experiance are here to HELP you. help you with what is the best for your enjoyment and your wallet. perhaps you dont understand that, perhaps you feel ashamed that other people have strong opions that they feel are justified - go pm uncle scotty calling him some racial slur or other and he'll rip you a new one. if i were actually korean, i'd track you down and beat you. actually i wouldnt, but there are probably those who would. insulting people based on sexual bias, ethnicity, those are not cool things. good luck in the 10th grade. i hope you pass. going to class and studying helps - you could ask all the "gooks" that seem to do well in school and get into ivy league schools why they pass..... The only other R200 Subaru subframe in the world besides mine (to my knowledge) belongs to Kumakubo, who drifts the STi in D1. Here is my car: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/Legacy%20BURNINATION%2003.jpg http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/P1010942.JPG http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/R200%20Subframe%20in%20car%20closeup.JPG -Custom Mr. Anlet R200 subframe (S14 differential) -Moser engineering rear axles -Custom driveshaft -Fused center differential I think WRX_driver and I did our conversions around the same time. I know that I had already broken and replaced 2 axles by october and started working on my R200 frame by mid November of last year. This is the center differential for Phase I 2.5l Legacy differentials: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/Legacy_Center_Diff--top.jpg Notice that it is different from the WRX/2.5RS differentials. I'd be skeptical of the Rocket Rally center diff replacement working properly in a BG/BD Legacy transmission. For RWD in a WRX, the center differential replacement from RR and an R180 subframe ought to cover it. Be prepared to replace your trailing arm bushings though, as the stock bushings make for a herky-jerky ride after being murdered by the torque. wrxdrftr2002 04-16-2006, 09:33 PM ^^^ so thats really it then? i plan on starting to buys the things i need but i want to get everything at once mranlet 04-16-2006, 10:38 PM Well, I don't have much firsthand experience with GD's, but I'd imagine that the more you beat on it the more things you'll break. If you have stock power, you'll probably be ok with an STi rear setup and a RR/welded center diff. Anything more than that and you'll start stripping stepper gears, crushing trailing arm bushings and possibly damaging center bearings and driveshafts. wrxdrftr2002 04-17-2006, 09:58 AM icic... im running up pipe, down pipe, boost controller, fmic, intake, fuel contoller, exedy street sport clutch, and exhaust. is there another way of approaching this then so i wont be blowing things up every weekend? mranlet 04-17-2006, 10:46 AM Is there another way of approaching this then so i wont be blowing things up every weekend? Yeah, the problem areas are most of what I talked about in my previous post, and the solutions -Swap your AWD transmission for a Nissan KA or SR transmission (the input spline pattern is the same for KA, SR and EJ transmissions). This requires custom bellhousing and KA or SR clutch disc sandwiched in your Subaru flywheel and pressure plate. Your existing clutch line might be long enough to relocate the slave to the side of the bellhousing where the Nissan clutches engage, but a custom braided line could be made at Amazon Hose. Starter would have to be messed with, but you could probably use either the Nissan or the Subaru unit with the right modification. I'm working on putting a W58 Toyota transmission in my own car and will keep posted -Get a one piece aluminum driveshaft from www.DirveshaftShop.com and eliminate both the center bearing and the weak Subaru piece. -Get improved/more rigid pitch stop mount, rear trailing arms, transmission and motor mounts. -The Subaru R180 rear end is good up through something like 350 RWHP. I believe that the Nissan R180 is good for a bit more due to the shorter and thicker axles. Anything more will require the man-style R200, for which I could build you a frame. With $2k worth of mods and many hours under the car, you could have a fairly bulletproof RWD setup. Much to the chagrin of the anti-RWD'ers, I'd be happy to help anywhere I can when it comes to RWD Subaru  wrxdrftr2002 04-17-2006, 11:21 PM well im not running more than 350 so i should be good in that area... so basicly the r180 set up should be ok for me? mranlet 04-19-2006, 01:26 PM Should be. It will fit, but it's integrity is not gauranteed in RWD. wrxdrftr2002 04-20-2006, 01:07 AM ^^ very tru.. the drive shaft will not line up tho will it? hypa 04-21-2006, 06:34 PM Wow mramlet, that's a wicked setup! To the original poster, I have a rwd conversion for sale now. It's been tested in my old car and worked well. I'd use it in my STi, but unfortunately the center diff won't fit in the new 6 speed. As for why? Because rwd is a lot of fun in the dry. You can dyno at any 2wd shop. Wagons doing burnouts trip people out. Anyway, drop me a pm if you have any questions. As for the ctr diff, I want $500 and it includes axle stubs for the front. They're not necessary, but I liked removing the front diff from the equation. Plus, axles are bloody expensive and I'd hate for you to hack up yours. cheers! mranlet 04-23-2006, 01:19 AM Thanks on the compliment. I'm debating swapping to a true RWD transmission, but I like the idea of a converted AWD trans. What is your center diff from? mranlet 04-23-2006, 01:20 AM Here's some inspiration: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4BB8ULDU wrxdrftr2002 04-24-2006, 10:15 AM wait..does the drive shaft have to be shortened or lengthened at all to make this work tho? sparco 05-04-2006, 04:28 PM On a side note. If you do do this type of converstion. Check your rear diff. make sure the ring and pinion have the proper spacing (Lash). Mine didn't and my whopping 142 bhp and 150 lbs at the rear wheels ended up ripping all the teeth off my pinion gear. Its my own fault for not checking a ring and pinion that had over a 150k on them. So any progress on the Toyota tranny? I was thinking of pulling my wrx tranny for something that was designed as a RWD unit. I think it would save some weight. I might be able to get a diff and tranny out of a R33 GTS-t, any thoughts or would a S13,14,15 diff and tranny be easier? hope you guys don't mind me picking your brains. Danny FuJi K 05-04-2006, 10:10 PM well...right now I'm RWD. It's really fun. I had a spare center diff so I just welded the side gear that transmits torque to the rear to the diff housing at four points. I have a 4.444 rear diff from an auto 2.5RS. Really fun running through the gears. I'm thinking about putting in the welded diff and attend an autocross. The handling of it is really nice. There's really not anyore of that power understeer. Also at the limit, the car almost wants to come around when off the throttle. Get on it and it wants to come around. With the torque of the engine, there's wheel spin if you're 30mph and turning while in 2nd gear and WOT. I have done a burnout, it's on VID, but....I still have to get that vid. |
