I've found out through unabomber's faq that the 03+ trannies have RA sized gears in them. . so I've decided to go ahead and buy an 03 tranny. The seller had it rebuilt and shortly after, he busted 2nd gear. I've noticed that a lot of people are still breaking trannies shortly after having them rebuilt. Could it be that the quality of the rebuild has something to do with these trannies breaking? I've been cobb stage 2.5ed for about 20k now and still no problems with my 02 tranny which has a total of 46k miles on it. I'm afraid it's gonna go, so therefore i bought an 03 tranny for back up reasons. I'm having this tranny rebuilt at Rallispec, so hopefully i'll have a quality rebuild. . but i'm just afraid that it's going to go. . .I baby my car everywhere, only time i consistently push my car is on the on-ramp and a little street racing here and there (shhhh!!). Anybody have any input on this?

From what I understand and from my experience your ok unless you abuse it. I know some people who drag and also people who autox. The 2 drag racers I know have both blown 2nd gear completly. The autox-ers tranny's are still kicking with no signs of damage.

If you roll onto the throttle and avoid slamming it into gear you will be fine. Also...avoid synthetic gear oil.

Measure those gears, 5 dollars says they arent RA sized. The jury is still out on that rumor, I have heard from reliable sources both ways.

Generally speaking, it's not the builder, it's the end user. Yes, there are a lot of bad builds out there, but Rallispec has built a billion and I'm confident they will build it right. After that, it's all on you. RA width gears are "better", but just remember they are an upgrade, not a bullet proof option.

I also concur about the measurements. See if they will micrometer 1-5 gears in your 02 and 1-5 gears in the 03 box to be 100% sure.

I have seen it with my own eyes they are bigger........ I don't know why SOA will not admit to it or why they only did 3-4 and not 1-4....that would have made way too much sence!!!!!

Just to answer the original posters question. I am @ 99k miles on my 02 5spd with the cobb 2.5 package. Used not abused is my motto. I have fun on a daily basis. I use the fluid from Subaru that was used years ago in the justys that were grinding gears. My dealer seperates it into to my own containers (quart). As it comes in 5 gals or 55 gal containers. Good luck. If I ever find a good price on an 03 tranny, I would put it away for a later time, if needed
