View Full Version : Who says you cant hit 8000+ rpms?

I did is in my MY01RS the other night!

And wow was i scared.

I was going up an onramp for the 14 freeway in socal, and at about redline in 3rd i shifted into what i thought was 4th, but must have been second.

For some reason there was no resistance in teh gear, just slid straight in, and i would have swore on anything it was 4th. But just as i let off the clutch the rpms jumped, not to the limiter, but passed the 8000 rpm mark. Some are going to say im lying, and some are going to think i dont know how to drive, but im tellin you, it went all teh way up there, and WOW was the ganzflow SCREEMING!

needless to say i was scared, pulled off to the side and kinda sat there for a minute thinking i just really screwed something up.

But its been 2 days now, and about 250 miles and nothing out of the ordinary, if anything it seems to be running better!

Now to the questions, why did it not stop at the limiter?

And why did it not lock me outta 2nd Gear?

1. The limiter can not slow your car down. if your car is going fast enough to make the RPMs go that high, it will go that high.

2. maybe u really jammed it in :P

Ive never driven a manual so I'm not sure if what I say is correct or not.

But just so you know becareful with your shifts or else youll end up like this: http://www.nanometer.com/racing/engine_images/dead_engine.htm

thats shifting from 5th to 2nd at 100mph. ive never heard of a car locking you out of gears. also i believe you can only hit the rev limiter while accelerating (this is set by the ECU). when you downshift, the engine has to go into whatever RPM is correct for that gear at the speed you are going (thus the reason for gears-you cant take the car to 50mph in 1st gear because the engine cant handle the RPMs it would take to make the power to get to it). this is why the motor above got toasted. it was probably going at F1 type RPMs (10,000+) and just toasted the engine.

but someone correct me if im wrong which i probably am.

checkout www.howstuffworks.com

i bet if you read the stuff in there about manual transmissions, it will make more sense.

****IMPORTANT**** read above post.
The rev limiter only works for FUEL and AIR when you are accelerating.
When you shift down you are using the transmission to increase the engine RPM's. If you drive and shift from 5th to 2nd and release the clutch it WILL blow up your engine because you have just made a mechanical connection to your tire speed through the gearbox to your engine. A rev limiter will NOT save you.

I did that once in my Swift GT.

Was driving down the highway on the way to Big Bend for a camping vacation and my friend was behind me in his truck.

I got restless and decided to speed up; Went from 5th to 3rd, redlined 3rd, and proceeded to shift into 4th. I hit 2nd by mistake and the engine ZINGED way past redline.

My friend said he saw a black cloud come out of my tailpipe and my car jumped a little. I didn't notice anything odd till we slowed down to stop to eat in the next town (Midland, Tx). When I slowed down I heard a knocking sound from the engine. It performed ok, just knocked when I shifted.

It turned out that there was a Suzuki Dealer in the town so we headed there. We left the car with them and continued the vacation. I called back the next day and found out that I knocked the flywheel loose.

Suzuki replaced it under warranty (I didn't tell them HOW it hapened) and I got my car on the way back from Big Bend the next week.

Needless to say I am have been very careful ever since then when shifting at or near redline.

Yup, revlimiter will only stop you during acceleration, not downshifting.

Yeah, we've all hit 2nd when trying for 4th at some point...

I did it once in my Outback, fortunately during deceleration as I was exiting the highway. 4th would have been maybe 3k RPMs, 2nd was a good solid redline... but I immediately knew I'd done something wrong and clutched back out in half a second. No noticeable damage.

Could be worse. I let my friend drive it once... he got on the highway and proceeded to upshift from 3rd to 4th to 5th... then he went for 6th >_<

Thankfully I saw him reach for the gearshift again... I grabbed his wrist and yelled "I only have FIVE gears!!"

On a related note... I've noticed the "stick grabber thingy" that theoretically prevents you from going into inappropriate gears is a bit wonky in my WRX. I've tried to upshift to 2nd several times and gotten bogged down by it... not at any interesting speed or high revs, either! Twice the stick completely stopped going into gear, and I ended up grinding when I released the clutch! I'm not a happy camper when that happens. Anyone else with such experiences?

This all reminds me of a story I heard from a friend's mom. Seems she was young and was tooling around with her girlfriends when she decided to race some guys in the next car. Well, as she was flying in her automatic she saw the "R" on the shifter. She thought it meant "R" for RACE! And she slammed it home. Needless to say there was some serious damage there and she learned her lesson. Too funny.

I did that on 95 on the way to ocean city maryland. me and about 7 other cars were driving down and my friend with a 01 Rs had a vidio camera, so I lagged behind and when they started to tape I down shifted to third and right when I was next to him I went to slam it to fourth and hit second. it's definately not the best sound in the world. luckly as soon as I fealt the whole car jerk I put the clutch back in and went on my way.

how fast were you going? what year/kind of rx7?
I got a 87 TII, i can go from 5th to 2nd at ~60-70 and still have about 1500 rpm to accelerate, but i shift at 8k :)

I do it all the time. Infact I hit 8300 often. But I have a 200 Celica GTS. According the SCC the WRX has the same head and valvetrain as the Japanese STi so we could raise the fuel cut to 7500rpms safely. Anyone have any ideas on this?>
