View Full Version : Stiffer front sway bars - GC8 & WRX

I had been using a Whiteline 18-22 bar for a few autoXs, but didn't like how the car handled. The car would roll alot, and it would swap ends too late during the turn. The rest of the car was totally stock and I was super broke at the time, so springs or struts were out of the question. After watching some video of my car at the autoXs, I noticed a gross amount of body roll, even with the rear bar set at 20mm. So I crossed my fingers and ordered a Whiteline 19mm front bar. To my supreme delight, the car has more overall traction, better turn-in, and ...get this, it spins out easier! (with both bars installed, rear @20mm)

You're confused, here's why. Whiteline bars are stiffer than FHI at any given diameter, and by alot. I've tested a bunch of sway bars buy both manufacturers, and the difference is noticible even when just puttering around town. So the jist is that Whiteline's 19mm front bar is stiffer than the stock GC8 20mm front bar, and the car will handle better with the smaller Whiteline bar!

I posted this because I've heard people say "stiffer front bars are bad, they make the car understeer" too many times. It can be true that a larger front bar will cause more understeer, but take it from someone like KC from NESIC, with a 22mm front bar on his WRX running in G-stock, the car turns in faster which means faster runs!

This is a discussion regarding this from a while back, good suspension speak stuff here: http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=81469

This is a recent thread that eventually becomes a product review of a 22mm front bar on a WRX wagon: http://i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17949

I hope this helps someone with limited funds be more competitive or enjoy a better handling Impreza.

Ok here come the questions:
What is the size of the stock front bar on the WRX?
If I change the front bar should I change the rear to an adjustable one?
(Front ) What size 20mm or 22 mm?
Does the front bar contain most of the body roll?

Thanx

Does the front bar contain most of the body roll? From experiance with my RS, I'd say the front bar has more leverage to controll body roll, than does the rear bar.
