View Full Version : Speedshop for conversion near Michigan?
Steve00RS 08-20-2001, 10:10 AM Well, it looks like im going through with a conversion on my 2000 RS. I am sending payment out this week for a 2.0 turbo with trans, ecu and harness. The thing is, I dont have the time or space to do the conversion myself. Does anyone know of a good shop in or near Michigan that could do a downtown job on the conversion for me? If all else fails I will attempt it myself but Im not looking forward to it. :)
Thanks
Steve
Safir 08-20-2001, 10:35 AM Dan at godspeed could handle this for you (God on the board) most of the michigan guys post around the midwest forum, and someone in there may be able to give you some other suggestions.
Fmdeadrick 08-20-2001, 10:41 AM There is a shop in Warren that works exclusively on imports. They do engine swaps, I believe. The name is AutoWerk Motorsports. The owner's name is Andy Nguyen 810-795-9798. http://www.autowerksmotorsport.com/
Tell him I sent you.

Hondaslayer 08-20-2001, 12:25 PM Garage day anyone?:D (j/k). Is this STI or a wrx drivetrain? Must see when finished.
karl_hungus 08-20-2001, 03:53 PM I'm not sure how close you are to detroit/windsor area but there's a shop here in windsor called speed of sound that might be able to help you out... I'm sure your dollar would go quite a bit farther up here too.
Here's their number
(519)944-3541
Steve00RS 08-20-2001, 05:08 PM Its a WRX engine but it comes with the STI 6-speed trans. I will surely post pics if I ever finish the job. :D
Thanks for the numbers. Ive gotten some response back but I will keep trying til I feel comfy with the solution. A guy I work with has offered his garage and air tools so who knows.....maybe I will do it myself.
Im not looking forward to the exhaust though. No one has mentioned it but I dont understand how I can just "drop" the 2.0 in place.
Steve
Streetman 08-20-2001, 05:19 PM US spec WRX engine? How'd you score a 6 speed? CAn I get that setup? Will I need to refinance my house to pay for it?
Steve00RS 08-20-2001, 05:33 PM No, im sorry for the confusion. Its a j-spec WRX engine. Delivered to my front door with the 6-speed trans.
Steve
Steve00RS 08-20-2001, 05:34 PM Karl,
Thanks for the info but I think I might get hammered trying to ship it over to Windsor. Even if I take it over myself im gonna have to claim it, and then claim the 2.5 when I bring it back. I dont know how it all works but I know it wouldnt be fun. :)
Steve
Hondaslayer 08-20-2001, 08:58 PM Just tell them your using a friend's garage to do an engine swap.
edkwon 08-21-2001, 03:30 PM Steve: just curious, how much is that runing you with the whole setup, not including the price of labor? Thanks
Ed
DuBYARX 08-21-2001, 04:45 PM Hey Now,
I'm sure a few of us Michigan Fellows could Knock this out for you. I can get a hold of the shop again. Safir what do you think up for an Engine swap?
We could make it a Weekend install day. We do work cheap, but we don't leave until it's rite (up & down up & down)
So if you want to Do It Yourself with alot of help from us, I Be up for it.
It can't be any worse then installing a 96 LT1 in a 86 pick up With ECU and Harness and Trans.

shh! haven't you ever heard of murphy? go knock on wood this instant!
Steve00RS 08-21-2001, 05:13 PM Wow, thanks for the offer. Now, assuming that the guy selling me the engine and trans emails me back im golden. However, once I started asking detailed questions about the engine he stopped responding. Im going to be ticked if I got the money together, put my ducks in a row, posted my engine potentially for sale, etc and then he flakes on me.
There would definately be something in it for everyone attending.......I wouldnt want to use your talents and send you home dirty and empty handed. :D
Steve
DuBYARX 08-21-2001, 05:40 PM When you install anything like that you learn to work with murphy, he's all rite until he starts taking and hiding the tools. (Alrite-y enough about Murph I don't want him thinking I 'm getting Cocky about workin with him again.) :)
Steve Just keep me informed. My only worry is it a ECU harness, is it a swap or is it tying it in to the one that is already there.
trboCIVIC&WRX 08-21-2001, 05:57 PM If you want to pay somebody to do it, you might try
tom @ payn technologies, or god, like somebody posted earlier. :)
payn tech.

Or, you just make a garage day of it.:D
Maximum 08-21-2001, 06:30 PM It's probably far from you, but Rallispec has done several JDM conversions; they really know their stuff and are very easy to deal with.
Steve00RS 08-22-2001, 10:37 AM DuBYARX,
The engine harness and ECU are included in the purchase so im not too worried about that. I finally got another email from the seller so things are back on track. :)
I will look into rallispec first and then if that doesnt pan out im gonna set up a garage day and cross my fingers. I will just have it shipped directly to my friends house and then set up a date and see if I have any volunteers from the i-club. :D
Thanks for all of your help so far!
Steve
Safir 08-22-2001, 10:37 AM I'm totally up for performing the swap ourselves, you know that ;) I just figured it sounded like he didnt want to try and tackle it.
i can use the lift to throw my shifter bushings in too as long as we're there:D...
Just let me know the date and time and i'll show up
(except the weekend of the 8th.. i'll be up running POR then.
Steve00RS 08-22-2001, 10:38 AM OH oh oh. And he even told me that if I have issues with the rear diff and front axles he will supply those too. I might just ask for those up front.
Thanks again
Steve
Hondaslayer 08-24-2001, 02:31 PM I am so down for a engine swap!!!1 let me know when
I can come and add unhelpful advice and stand around. :p
JC
Safir 08-24-2001, 02:59 PM speaking of JC being unhelpful - when you coming back boy?
Hondaslayer 08-24-2001, 03:01 PM I believe he's back on the 31st. You going to redline tonight?
Steve00RS 08-24-2001, 03:49 PM Ok, im gonna continue this thread over in the Midwest forum where there is already a thread started. :)
