View Full Version : We need a new server!

I am tired of seeing this message:

The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later.

Anyone else agree??

Streetman

Never, ever seen that.

Perhaps it's coming from your ISP, not this site's server. I've surfed this site for a while now on a 56K line, then DSL, and finally, I've gone with cable. No problems on any of them.

what more do you want???

Hmm...interesting. I do get this message fairly often at work. I know this place is free but the messages can get frustrating sometimes. Anyone else ever seen this message?

I saw it about ten times trying to read this thread. How's that for irony.

I bet it's people searching all open forums.

You want irony?

I just posted again after this, and got it for the first time EVER. What the hell? I hope this doesn't continue. If it does, I'd say get a new server, and charge $10 a year to access this site. Isn't there like 1000 members? Figure 600 or so would stick around. You'd have $6000 to pay for bandwidth.

Just a thought. Let's just hope this is just a glitch for today.

Or it could be the 370+ users currently connected.

Donations!

I'd gladly donate for the site, as I'm sure many users would.

Just my $0.02, but I wouldn't require registration... just offer incentive for registration! Something cute and silly, like the ability to modify your tagline, include a short signature, etc...

A $10 donation would be more than worth it to me.

Nick was probably just running a query in the background and took a few processes from the board. No biggie, just be patient. :)

Yeah, I get the server busy message pretty often. I'd be willing to donate, but I think requiring it would really kill the site...

I have never seen any error messages since the upgrade, and I am surfing with a 1200k connection. Yes, slower than a 14.4k modem, the connection at my office is literally the slowest connection on EARTH!

We just got a new server not long ago. Granted, many new people have joined after that time, but I vividly remember sending my donation. Be patient, there were a lot of people here today.

For the record, there are nearly 10,000 members, not 1,000. We just got a new server too- of course, that was in the 3 and 4 thousand member days....

So what line do we go to return the old server and exchange it for a new higher capacity one? Anyone remember the recipt?

Last I heard (and correct me if wrong, I don't want to be disseminating bad information), the goal was to eventually earn(through donations or sales from the store) enough to purchase a second server, so SQL could run on one, and the web interface on the other.

Is this correct? I was trying to get Nick a deal on some 15K Cheetah's, unfortunately, Compucom's corporate office is run by monkeys, so I couldn't get it together. That's what I thought he wanted them for.

Well if anyone wants to just donate 10K for a server I'd gladdly take it... hehe... ;)

The truth of the matter is... the number of people we have online is croaking the server during the day. The search function still hurts the server. And a good reason for that is because the minimum search word length is 3 instead of 4 letters. This makes such a large impact difference on the machine I didn't want to do it. It was hard to justify not doing it for searches like WRX, STi, and others...

So the server still needs some tweaking as far as the software and such... but it's not something that happens overnight.

Just bear with us... in case anyone didn't notice we have indeed doubled our members in just about 4 months. There aren't many sites that get the amount of constant traffic we do on a daily basis. The only other ones that I know about have some serious backing and some serious computing power behind the site.

I have a few options in the works for us upgrading equipment. I will let you know what happens as I always has... as things change.

I get that message sometimes, but it doesn't really bother me. I mean, it's a small price to pay for such a great site! :D

Nick!

Limit the cross-forum searching before limiting the search terms to 4 words or more... Take it from a web-application developer...

Cross-forum searches aren't very valuable IMHO. Being able to search for "STI", however... That's valuable.

The last version of the server automatically set the forum to search in according to whatever forum you were in when you clicked "Search". I imagine that would minimize things as well.

If you need any help with the CF search functions let me know. I work for Verity, Im sure one of our consultants wouldn't mind throwing a few performance tips your way.

This is probably one of the larger forum sites on the net, certainly has an insane amount of traffic.

Quitcherbitchin!

They'll take care of it, but the imprezidents also have real life jobs... they don't make money off this.

Thanks for the offers of code help guys...

The forum software is actually quite optimized. The searches are on a word list in the database now so it's not like the old days. Whether the search is on one forum or 20 forums it takes just about the same amount of time.

The only tweaking we need at this point is with MySQL. I don't know that much about tuning it... and from all I've read it's more of an art than a science.

So before I change any PHP code (vBulletin's language) the server needs to be squeezed for it's performance.

I'm a little up in the air about any more donations. We had a few people bitching the last time because we now have the sponsership from TireRack and stuff... not like that does anything but "help" pay for the server expenses! I wish we were collecting some serious cash and Alex and I could do this fulltime.

Anyway... if anyone out there has some actual MySQL tuning experience any help would be greatly appreciated.

has FAR more traffic than this site. however, as nick mentioned, it has a ton of backing, and a significant revenue stream from advertising. apples and oranges.

I would get the SIPP together and go to SOA.

Get some kind of backing from them.

I-club and its enthuisatic memebers are probably 90% of Subaru's nitch performance market.

Its plain to see that the discussions and promotion of our beloved Subarus are driving us to make our next car purchase a Subaru.

I wonder how they would respond to this.

Is it safe to say that I-Club is the #1 highest traffic Subaru site in the world? ScoobyNet doesn't have our member count. I don't know about traffic though.

We already are selling ad banner space on the site. It's at the top of the few forums that we are selling ads in ... like the Turbo, and NA forums.

As far as vwvortex getting more traffic than us... I don't completely believe that. I know they have a lot more users in the list they we do... but I know we have a lot more active users (users that have post counts and aren't just ghosts) and a much greater # of users online at any one given time. I just checked... they have about 200 people online... we have about 400.

Not to be rude... but we also have real content here... I've visited vwvortex quite a few times, and I've never found it as useful at this site. There is a lot of good conversation over there... but it tends to get ruined with all the bitching and moaning and yelling at people.

Chances are what's gonna happen is we were going to have to seperate the web and database server into two physical machines. Right now they are one... problem is we're gonna need something quite hefty to be the new webserver while the existing machine will just do database. But we're talking at least 2-3K.

I like the idea of asking for some support from SOA. Get some of their bigwigs to monitor the site for a few days and theyll see how much interest and continued support the site gives Subaru. The kinda money you mentioned above should be small potatoes for them. Just dont sell out guys. Theyre gonna try to seduce you with FREE b4s and the likeand try to take over the site. You must resist. ;)

Hey, don't drag me into this! I will say I have educated the local dealers' young "internet salesman" though. Getting the "post-sale" walk-through....

"And this lever opens the gas cap, but I sure you already knew that. Actually, you know more about every aspect of this car than I do."

And he was no dummy!!

Nick

Trust me... SOA keeps a very close eye on this board.

Why do you think they published the service bulletin about the CE lights on the new car?

Anyway... we don't want anything from SOA... it complicates things to much. When you form a partnership with someone like that... you need to protect their image. That's not what this board is about. If something sucks... I want to know about it.

We will get by... we just need to be frugal with our stuff... I just wish the poor server could keep up better with the growth of the site... but that's asking alot of the poor little server that could.

There's no "support the i-club fund" or anything else? I'd happily chip in some money through paypal. I've gotten more use out of this site than most things I've paid for.

What happens if I "overpay" for my i-club stickers?

maybe a friendly regional competition? Even if there isn't a need for cash now - it'll be much easier to raise it while everything is running smoothly. we could think of it as i-club insurance.

How about just putting a link to "DONATIONS" on the home page. It would be there anytime someone decided to throw a little extra $$ down.
