View Full Version : Drove them all...made my decision
Jazz95 08-20-2001, 11:11 PM OK,
I have now driven all of the major subies. I own an L, I've test driven an RS, my best friend has a WRX, and Mike2000GT let me tool around in his car. At first, I thought there was no comparison, the WRX would win overall, but now...
I'm going with the Legacy. That's what I want, thats what I'm getting.
Sure, the WRX was fast (very), the RS was eye catching and stylish (ricer envy), but the Legacy's overall ride, handling, comfort, and look made me go with the larger body.
I'm a tall guy, so I like comfort. The WRX's seats were just too...I don't know, race like. I know that's what were supposed to be after, but they hurt my back. The L, we're not even going to talk about. The RS was nice, but a little small.
Mike has a few upgrades on his car (tires, short shifter, and sway bar) that gave his car an advantage in handling, but I don't need the speed of the WRX, or the flashiness of the RS. I think I'd get in trouble too much, thinking I was the man all the time.
All in all, gotta have the Legacy. Some people are just different I guess. Just don't call me a troll or anything.

Dolphin Overton 08-20-2001, 11:16 PM I think legacies kick A$$. As long as you get the manual it should be a really fun car. I think they are the best looking subies around when they're modified or in STI trim. Good choice.
Jazz95 08-20-2001, 11:20 PM dolphin,
I'll definitely be gettin' the manual...wouldn't have anything else, cause I fall asleep when I drive autos.
:o
Jazz95
subysouth 08-20-2001, 11:29 PM the Legacy wagon is my favorite. Its hard to find one with a manual. My L wagon has got the 5 speed. I love it.
FuJi K 08-21-2001, 12:27 AM which MODEL YEAR ya getting???
Seeing StaRS 08-21-2001, 03:08 AM Good choice Jazz, sounds like you really made an effort to make a informed decision. I must say the Legacy is a great car-its what started my love affair with Subaru. I want an RS really bad, but the thought of parting with my Legacy is kinda sad. The car rides like butter, is comfortable and is a hoot to toss around on the gravel. In fact its rally heritage shines right on through. I think the latest Legacy's look more expensive than they really are. Good luck finding your car and hope to see you and your ride at the next Mid-A meet.
BTW- Give AutoTrader.com (http://www.autotrader.com) a try if you haven't already
Kostamojen 08-21-2001, 04:48 AM Do you mean 2000+ Legacy or the older models?
ivbdn 08-21-2001, 06:38 AM A Sube's a Sube no matter which one you choose :D ! That's all that matters.
Jazz95 08-22-2001, 10:18 PM Well,
I'll most likely be getting at least a 2000+ model. I just love the way the new body style looks. I wish I could get a B4 Blitzen, for all you GTA3 players out there.
Right now I'm just working on getting the rims, because they are the best looking stock rims from the factory (in my opinion).
Hey StaRS, trade ya!! :D
Jazz95
anotherB4 08-22-2001, 10:32 PM Good process you went through! The more you know, the better informed the decision.
Good work!:D
And that's not just coz you got a Legacy!!;)
Enjoy!
Jazz95 08-23-2001, 01:36 AM Don't have it yet. But believe me, I'm looking. I'm in the process of trying to sell a car I just bought. I might just keep it for a while until I can form a plan to get my Legacy.
when I do finally get it, I'm going to concentrate on making it look like a Blitzen. even if it is wishful thinking. :p

GeAtReddY 08-23-2001, 01:44 AM hey good choice man, I love the style of a legacy wagon. Is bad ass. :)
bill harvey 08-23-2001, 10:46 AM I would wait till next year hopefully they wil put the h6 in the legacy gt with a 5spd. that would be a really badass car
bluesubie 08-23-2001, 10:54 AM Any Sube is a good choice.
Yeah, the Legacy will definately be getting more power in a little while. Since you're tall, make sure you're comfortable with the seats. Some people have complained the seat bottom doesn't give enough thigh support.
IMO, my OBS seats are slightly more comfortable on long trips than my wife's OB. It could be my Impreza bias though. :D
Good luck,
Dennis
Rebellion 08-23-2001, 10:57 AM yeah .. my plan is to get a WRX and in 4-5 years or so get a B4 (hopefully). I always thought the Legacy's had the sexiest back ends... and 02 rear ends are bland and previous look like camrys from the back...
hmmm.. I'm a rear-end kinda guy I guess =P~
WRX4Lex 08-23-2001, 12:56 PM I may end up with the GT wagon myself! I love the WRX, and would still love to get one, but the Legacy is bigger and would be more comfortable as a daily driver and for long trips. (My dog would like the extra room, too.) Still, I may go for the WRX. I have a few months to decide since I'm going to use the IMBA deal to get invoice and am waiting out the 6 months requirement.
Whatever you decide, I think you'll be happy...
subymamma 08-23-2001, 11:05 PM My 26 year old son bought a white 2000 Legacy the same day I bought my 2002 OBS, last April. I was really surprised he didn't go for the Rally Sport but was pleased he didn't because he can be a wild enough driver.
His car has been mistaken for a BMW and Lexus because people are so impressed and not familiar with Subarus...
NICE car!!!
Mike2000GT 08-24-2001, 03:55 PM Jazz,
Nice post man. Glad the GT was able to sway you. It definatly helps to be educated when making such a big decision. (he he, no more 1.8L FWD mistakes eh?)
When I bought the GT, I was first interested in the OBS, but needed something more than the 124hp that the Saturn had. The 143 put out by the 2.2L was 'okay' but I wanted more. So I was shown the RS. (I liked the RS, but it felt a little tight and 'spartan' to put it best.) I asked for something bigger. Ta da! GT!
I was shown the GT and lent it for a day. The car sold itself. The ride was awesome, seats were comfy, controls were great, the car handled unbelievablely (even on the RE92s, but compared to the SL2, the car tracked like a seeking missle!)
If you're really looking to buy, now is the best time. When 2001s are on the way out and 2002s are inbound. Dealers drop prices and push low financing like crazy to get the 'old' stock off the lot. I made the mistake of not being patient enough. Had I waited, I probably could have gotten a better deal... *shrug*
I'm happy with the car, just saving my money for the turbo. :D
EDIT: As a side note. I am totally against the import of the H6 to the GT. By far a 2.5L turbo or 2.0L Twin turbo (read B4) would be the ultimate upgrade. more than likely the H6 can be stroked to 230 in a GT application, but its just the beginning with a 2.5L turbo. Besides, turbos are more fun, to feel the power 'kick in'. With the H6, its too linear... too low key. Turbos are much sexier cars to drive... the sound the feel...
As a money making standpoint, sure all the typical Legacy buyers would take an H6... in automatic. *wince* But I digress. The intent of the Legacy is not the same as that of an RS or WRX.
But thats my 0.02$

Retsyn 08-24-2001, 04:31 PM I had a '98 Legacy and I loved it, but it developed some tranny problems (Due to a dealership that will remain nameless  ) and I had to get rid of it. I could have gotten another Legacy but the 2001's have the same HP as my 98 but are substantially heavier.
Given that, I went with a 2001 RS which has the same horsepower but is lighter. I could have bought the WRX but *damn* that thing is ugly (Just my opinion, don't get bent).
In an ideal universe I'd have bought a B4. The RS looks mean and evil and to a certain extent I like that, but the B4 is just SLICK! The new body of the Legacy is great. Especially with a wing.
The only thing that could stop me from turboing my RS at this point would be something B4-esque. If Subaru brings decent power (around 250HP) to the Legacy I'll be on that so fast it'll make your head spin. Hell, I'll give you my deposit now Subaru ;)
brainrally 08-24-2001, 06:13 PM I like the Legacy, too. I sat in a Legacy GT Sedan, and my reaction was "This is cool." I think I'd have been just as happy tooling around in a Legacy as my RS. The only difference was that the RS is lighter. I also almost got the OBS.
Since the WRX came out, though, I want the WRX Wagon. The only thing that convinced me to overlook the OBS was that it didn't have as much power as the RS.
I'm keeping the RS.
gtguy 08-24-2001, 09:19 PM No apologies, mate. At a recent Midwest meet, the best-looking car there was a black GT Limited, 95-99 body style.
I got into a WRX wagon from a Legacy GT wagon, and only miss my car in theory. But they're very different rides. The WRX speed, handling and body rigidity swayed me.
Having said that, even if a WRX STi came over, I would wait for a high-performance Legacy. You can tune a WRX to get close to an STi in performance, but you can't make a Impreza into a Legacy.
I'm a Legacy guy wearing Impreza clothes, I guess. In 2-3 years, things will really be interesting in Scoobyland.

eastbaysubaru 08-24-2001, 09:34 PM I would agree with Mike2000GT, I wouldn't want the H6 in the legacy lineup anywhere, other than the OBs. I think it's a disgrace that they think they can push that ***** on us. It's heavy, which makes the front end even heavier. I also would like to see the twin turbo. I can't see a 2.5L turbo because they've never used that block to turbo before, why not go with a proven motor? I just hope they don't disgrace the GT.

remarcable 08-24-2001, 10:14 PM Legacy.
More cargo space!
Although I certainly do have WRX envy to some extent, I'm growing happier and happier with the outback after tossing some mod-candy at it and watching the mods get gulped up and added to the muscle mass.
Any Sube would be a good choice. But I fell in love with the 96-99 body.
Jazz95 08-26-2001, 11:22 PM Thanks for all the input guys...
HIHO, that's a sweet looking Leg you've got there. The only thing that I miss about the new body style is the absence of the hood scoop..."drool"
Anyways, I just got back from the ocean, and I drove my friends WRX down there and back. And putting it through the same test that I put the GT through just solidifies my choice.
I went to the supermarket down there, and I was just not impressed with the overall look of the car when I walked out of the store. And, the truth is I got more looks from other drivers in the Legacy GT. Bottom line, gotta have the GT.
However, I did enjoy the pure speed of the 2.0L turbo. Downshift, double-clutch, take off. Gotta be some of the best acceleration I've ever experienced. Although the overall ride was just annoying, cause when I got out of the car my back and my butt hurt like crazy. Too many bumps and jolts, and the RE92's present a really rough ride compared to the 703's that Mike2000GT has.
Still gotta have that Legacy!!!
Hey Mike, I might just have to go and talk to Pam and see what I can work out. :D
Jazz95
On a side note, I'd be HIGHLY dissapointed if they imported the H6. I love the way the 2.5L engine performs and I can only imagine what it would be like with a few pounds of boost. The weight factor plays a big part too. You think your rotors are glowing now...
silverSurfer 08-27-2001, 12:13 AM ya ya ya!! let's go Legacy let's go!

oh and no "glow" on these rotors :D

Mike2000GT 08-27-2001, 12:18 PM Jazz,
When you go see Pam, make sure you act REAL indecisive. Lemme know when you go... I'll harass her some too. :D
Seriously thou, save some $$$ for a downpayment and wait for the 2003s to come out. You should be able to get some sweet financing deals on 2002s. The selection of 2001s prolly isnt all that great now... and Subaru rarely offers deals.
Also, Pat Olsen had an article about him helping his sis in buying a Subie. He has some info on the research he did and found out the price the dealer pays for the car. It gives you a barganing chip. (Meaning, I probably could have worked a little better deal had I not been so awed by the GT. :p ) Do a search by his username (Patrick Olsen)... you may even find a link to the video of his roll
You could also enroll for a Subaru credit card. You get $$$ towards a purchase or services. I've got mine maxxed out already! (j/k)
THEN you'll be ready to do some driving schools! muhahahahah!
The ultimate country road with no speed limits and no cops.

GooseMan 08-27-2001, 03:55 PM Dude! I love the look of Legacy's too! I was contemplating finding a nice used 98-99 black GT wagon....that would be soooo cool. Tint the windows DARK, lower it slightly, but keep the stock mags.....
you gotta get a BLACK WAGON!!!!! DO IT FOR ME!:D
-EDIT: silversurfer, your car is NICE! :D
MY99 2.5GT 08-27-2001, 04:43 PM I don't understand why all of you would cry if they put an H6 into the Legacy. For one it would probably be cheaper than developing a boost ready EJ25. Plus why not boost the H6? I wouldn't mind seeing 320-350 horses out of a 5-7 psi bolt on turbo setup.
Sexy Rear End Is Right!

Retsyn 08-28-2001, 09:54 AM *Sniff sniff* I miss my baby too. 1998 Legacy GT. The limited came only in an automatic that year so I made them put everything from the limited (leather, subwoofer etc.) into my beautiful silver GT. I kept telling the dealership that there was something wrong with the tranny (weird noises etc.) they kept telling me there was nothing wrong and that it was "just a normal Subaru noise". 2000mi outside of warranty the thing starts making nasty noises and shaking on the highway. The dealership all of a sudden finds a $3000.00 - $3500.00 problem. I did the math and discovered that for the SAME financed amount as my Legacy was, I could have a brand new Impreza without chronic tranny problems. Thus I'm now in a silver Impreza. I too however am a Legacy guy in Impreza clothing. They just HAVE to give the GT more get up and go. They do that, I'll buy a new one, but as it is right now, the new GT's have less go than my 98 did and I'm not going there. Besides, I WANNA HOODSCOOP!
