View Full Version : 356whp / 362 tq off a Deadbolt vf22

Thanks to Doug at TopSpeed for tuning my car with the SMC alcohol injection kit. I picked up almost 40+ whp and about 40 tq off of my 93 octane tune.

Also thanks to Jerry for the turbo work. I think this about maxes my car out without going with a bigger turbo and injectors so this is the end of the modifications for the WRX (except for when the stock tranny finally goes). Now its time to focus on trying to finish my AWD 510 project.

I'll post the charts when I get them.

great numbers man, what did deadbolt do to your vf22?

LiquidForce

Its ported, with a slight clip and has an upgraded compressor. It hits 21+ lbs of boost around 3600 rpms. It may be more but my gauge doesn't read that high.

On a side note , I took my neighbor who owns a 68 GTO for a ride. He didn't believe that a 4 cylinder could put out that kind of power. He's a believer now ;)

Here is your graph... just for giggles I have overlayed it with a stock WRX dyno graph.

Enjoy

2.5 sti short block with wrx heads
txs tmic
txs tbe (catless)
helix uppipe
ecutek
pe 650's
walbro fuel pump
vf22 ported, clipped and upgraded compressor wheel
modified fpr and recirc valve

For reference here is a chart comparing my setup with a vf34 and the same setup with the worked over vf22.

That turbo is a PE1820 clone not a vf22.

so are you going to commerce dragway friday????????

also do you need a new fmic?

Like CMJ said, I don't think that turbo is really considered a vf22 anymore... Definitely sounds (and looks like) the pe1820 clone that jerry has been known to make... Nice numbers regardless...

WOW!!!

that's super-impressive!!!

doug-- jerry--

are there gains to be had on the stock vf39 (2006 version) aside from tuning?? i have heard some 'less than shining' stories of hybrid vf39's nto even making oem power or spool....

guess im wondering if there's payoff for any efforts into the architecture of the vf39, or if i should just be happy with the tuning??? (i have, on the other hand, heard SEVERAL shining examples of vf39 tuning that makes LEAPS AND BOUNDS of improvements)....

man, im anxious to get tuned....

I know its not really a vf22 anymore. The title was just a hook to get people to read. ;)

It's Jerry's Kong2 without the coating which is essentially a PE1820.

boost level?

afrs?

pure water, or water/alchy blend?

thx

boost level: i'd guess a peak of 24-25 tapering to 18 at redline. It maxes out my boost gauge and the delta dash.

afr's still in the 10's

pure methanol

Doug tuned it via the live tuning feature of the ecutek. I wanted to be able to revert back to my "stock" map when methanol was not available. Once Ecutek comes out with a version that allows real map switching I'll get a full blown tune for it. With the current user tune you can only pull out so much fuel. That's why its still so rich.

Well, due to the problem of cracked turbine housings, I would probably encourage you to invest in a different turbo if you want to start putting down more power with a reliable turbo.

thnx Jer-

for now (keyword, now), im looking to keep the stock system components intact. IOW, stock injectors, intake, etc....

what turbo will net as good as vf39 tuned performance?? i eventually will goto an 18G (tdo6H) with injectors and possibly an intake.....

is there another IHI series blower, or a deadbolt offering that will match/outspool the vf39?

sorry for the topic drift....

I have a similar setup but using the sti pinks for injectors. I also have changed the gearset to Sti-Ra and I can't get the boost level back up to where it used to be. I know that by changing the gear ratio I've effectively lowered the amount of load on the car. How, then, do I overcome this? Do I use a helper spring? Oh, I've dynoed 300hp and 300tq on my setup. My personal best at MOROSO has been a 12.8 at 109mph, for reference.

I have a 19lb helper spring on my turbo. It was about $2.50 at home depot. Before the spring the most boost I could get was 18-19. Best 2.50 i've ever spent on the car.

do they sell them by the pound number? Or did you test it with a line from the nipple to the wastegate actuator? You going to the track?

yuuuuup ;)
wastegate helper spring + vf22 = boost.

The spring I used was rated 19lbs on the package. I did not measure it. There is a picture somewhere on the boards of one hooked up.

If I can find some friends to go up to Commerce on Friday I'll go. I never go to the track without having an alternate way to get home in case something breaks.

Your best bet is to get AAA.
I get 5 tows a year (maximum of 100 miles/ea) with my membership. For $100, it's a great way of saving your butt when something breaks.

btw, great numbers. I'm a bit envious, especially after seeing the plot with the stock WRX overlaid.

Sweet numbers! I am getting ready to do the same setup once I swap to EJ257 block. Going PE1820 and I also have a Hyperflow TMIC.

I am running the older cryo'd and shot peened RA gears and hope that they will hold up to this. Don't want to go higher and feel this is probably the limit for these gears.

While it may not be a vf22 anymore, the numbers aren't that off of what a standard vf22 would probably put down on that set-up.
I know several vf22s that hit 270/280 whp ftlbs at 20-22 psi on DynoJets from ej205s; pinks, headers, tbe, FMIC/TMIC, ect (3rd gear pulls)
Add 25% more displacement, 4-5 psi of boost and alcohol injection and I'm betting you'd see similar numbers.
Understand, I'm not balking at your turbo (I've got a deadbolt ported and clipped vf22 myself) nor am I trying to downplay your power. It's Awesome! It's not too far off what a SZ55 on an STI will put down, at a fraction of the cost!

Id love to see those results plotted against some other turbos like an 18g on that dyno.

Seems like a very economical setup.

will the oem injectors suffice for a vf22 (2006 sti)??

curious if i'd need to go bigger (already have the fuel pump for my upcoming ECUtek tune)
