View Full Version : Straightening and painting intercooler fins
jigga 09-12-2005, 06:32 PM i have performed a few searches and found nothing that covers this,
but is there a toolt hat one is to use to straighten the fins on a Tube and fin FMIC? Also, what about repaining? My APS DR500 has a few spots where the paint has come off, and I would like to touch all of this up without the job being obvious...
Any ideas?
I was reading about radiator paint in a few other threads, but there is no mention of where to get this stuff from.
I could not find anything on how to straighten out the fins that may have been bent by road debris.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
jigga 09-12-2005, 06:34 PM oh,and mods, please feel free to move this thread wherever you see fit... I thought it would best fit into this section of the forum...:)
AndyH 09-12-2005, 09:07 PM Check out the radiator fin straightener tools available from the Eastwood Company, I bet they'd work for a tube/fin intercooler too.

jigga 09-12-2005, 11:10 PM Andy,
Thanks so much for providing those links! The pahe even has the paint that I would need as well to touch up the intercooler as well too!
Now to see if I can get that tool up here in Canuckland..:)
Hank3 09-13-2005, 12:16 AM How well do the rake and pliers work? Anyone have experience with them?
Samurai Jack 09-13-2005, 11:03 AM Yeah, I'd like to know that too. I just use a small screwdriver and gently straighten out the fins if I need to. If the fin straightener works, could be time to order one.
AndyH 09-13-2005, 01:42 PM If you guys are asking me how well either of the tools work, I have no idea. I just knew in the back of my mind that Eastwood sold them as I get their catalog in the mail.
jac04 09-13-2005, 01:43 PM A pair of tweezers with a broad, flat tip works great for straightening fins. For the rounded bends on the fins, I use the shank of a small pop-rivet to straighten those areas.
MT_WRX 09-13-2005, 05:53 PM I use a round toothpick and some patience. Works great!

^^^^ and/or a small common screwdriver....anything else is kinda a waste.
jigga 09-13-2005, 07:31 PM hmm thanks for the input guys... truly appreciated.. I think i will try the screwdriver trick first.. I know i tried it in the past with my turboXS TMIC, witht he bar and plate setup, and while the screwdriver helped, it wasn't as perfect as I would have liked.. Perhaps it will work better on a tube and fin intercooler core.
pityr 09-13-2005, 08:08 PM Ive used a small screw driver and a toothpick before and would recommend the toothpick over the screwdriver.

they work fantastic, especially since intercooler fins aren't exactly straight lines, they're all S shaped..
