View Full Version : Windows steaming up like crazy

It's raining here in Seattle (suprise, suprise) and this morning when I started my car the windows were clear, but after starting my car and letting it warm up for awhile while I had a smoke outside (I never smoke in my car), the windows were all steamed up. Nobody was in the car, so how did they get so steamy?
The defroster works instantly, but immediately after I turn it off the windows are all steamy again. I really don't want to have my A/C going all the time.

OK. I know (duh). Rainy weather = foggy windows, but this is ridiculous. It's as if steam were coming out of my defroster vents

run the a/c or forget it....
you can have the heat and a/c on at the same time u know...

yes... fog -x is a nice thing... leaves streaks and doesnt work all that well...

yes you can clean your windows all you want.. they will still steam up...

crack the windows open or use the a/c

the a/c has a natural inhibitor that works as a dryer for the air system... it keeps the windows steam free... as a Seattle resident for the past ???? 20 something years... take my word on it!!
heheee...

good luck!

you've got two trunk monkeys humpin their brains out in the back! Throw some cold water on them, and giev them each a happy meal. After a while your windows should clear up!
(sorry, it seems the medication is a bit more effective today :D)

Thanks SubieGal & blaster88,

Yeah, I know about the whole A/C drying effect and the fact that you can use it with the heat. I've just never had a car that steamed up the windows so quickly. I'm not a heavy breather (I don't think so anyway). My gas mileage is gonna suck if this hotter-than-hell-one-day-rainy-the-next weather keeps up.

Hmm... I don't know about trunk monkeys, but My wife did leave her bunny slippers in the trunk. You know what the say about rabbits!

I don't suppose you're taking orders for slippers are?
I think you'll need a warehouse by the time those little bunnies are done!! :D

Check your passenger floorboard... is it wet? If so, the seal around your windshield might be bad. This can be fixed with some silicon from a car parts store.

I had a similar issue where I came to about 2" of standing water on my passenger floorboard.

I always have my controls set to defrost+floor, slightly warm, some air moving. AC is only on when it fogging gets really bad or it's hot.

What does this do? With just a driver in the car, the windows don't fog up all that quickly. I've found that the constant warm air keeps them dry, keeps offgas buildups from forming (the evil haze). And it prevents fogging on the *outside* of the windshield, a weird phenomena I've only seen here in the PNW.

Like others said, make sure the air is not on recycle and make sure there's no other water in the car.

Here in SC the humidity is just as bad, if not worse, than Washington. Especially during the summer.

Anytime during or after a rainstorm the windows will fog up very quickly... instantaneously in fact. Since I love driving around in empty parking lots during rainstorms (scoobnuts anyone?) this can be a real pain.

AC on, set to cold. Press defrost switch. Defogger is now on. Presto! Problem solved!

Well, pretty much solved anyway.

I have also found that using stuff like Armor-all or carpet cleaners will evaporate and put a nice glaze on the windows, which makes it much worse when they fog up.

I used Fog-X and pretty much got rid of the problem. I was reading the owners manual and it say that foggy windows, and less air pressure from the vents may be a sign that the air filter needs to be replaced.....the a/c air filter that is. It should be relpaced every year or 7000 miles. That may be something to look at if you have the air filtration system installed.

just my $.02

I have an A/C filter? OMG, 153k, some rallyX's, lots of dirt roads, lots of mud and snow... i guess it's time to change it?

P.S. Where can I find this mythical filter?
