View Full Version : Just drove one...
Platinum03Wagon 09-27-2005, 05:24 PM I like the handling, I like the interior, I like the folding third row, and the nav system and swoopy dash.
I hate, absolutely hate, the auto tranny. At 40mph (1500 rpm) I dropped the hammer hard (gas pedal to the floor, literally) and was able to get in a full "one one thousand two one thousand" before the car actually realized I wanted to go faster...REALLY bad throttle lag.
The styling of the back is growing on me, but I can't get over the nose...
And $38,000+ price as tested? Seems high for what it is...heated seats notwithstanding...
Re-style it and re-map the auto tranny, and I'll take another look. Until then, its just another minivan.

Foxbat 09-27-2005, 07:22 PM (1) You don't need to pay $38,000+ for it. Many pay close to invoice or below invoice which is about $35,000. That is the top of the line model. Others are even cheaper. 5-seater non-limited Tribeca starts below $30k.
(2) It is not throttle lag but simply a lack of low end torque from the whimpy 3.0 H-6 to power 4,200 lb car. A turbo H-6 or NA 3.6 H-6 can easily solve this problem. It's not tranny's fault. Subaru Engineer did all they can to modify this tranny in order to get every bit of juice out of tiny engine. For comparison, all SUVs in this class all come with engines from 3.4L to 3.6L. I'd say it is not that bad for a 3.0L engine but a little more is appreciated.
totald 09-27-2005, 10:21 PM I have no problems with my wife's. If you want better response tap back while romping on the gas. Problem solved.

It looks like I may FINALLY be able to buy one soon! Where are you getting these numbers from? I don't see invoice numbers near that low on the window stickers...
Foxbat 09-28-2005, 09:34 AM Window stickers are MSRP not invoice. You can check invoice price from various web sites like Edmunds etc. You can also ask dealer to show you actual invoice of the car if you decide to buy. With current price of gas, you can easily start with below invoice price and go from there. I bought mine back in July for $500 over invoice when it just released. You should be able to do much better than that now.

I'm not a fan of asking a dealership to go below invoice...invoice or a little over is very fair. Holdback doesn't pay the bills.
Foxbat 09-28-2005, 04:26 PM It's called free market. No one is asking dealers to go broke. If one dealer sells under invoice, why should I go to other dealer the ask for pay more. If a dealer can't pay the bills, it won't sell cars that low.Period.

If you want throttle response, use the sportshift feature and drop a gear before hitting the gas. The engine is not that bad but you have to rev it.

Foxbat is correct. MSRP is NOT invoice. I essentially did what he suggested when I purchased mine. My dealership was more than willing to negotiate with me. I got my Limited 7 passenger Tribeca for about $34000. That came with other features like puddle lights and mud guards. Even got them to replace the foglight bulbs with PIAA Amber foglights. :p

I just got a new job with a substantial pay increase with a promotion there already on the horizon. My wife is starting to consider letting me get a Tribeca. I should get her to talk to you about the true cost of a loaded Tribeca as she still keps referring to it apprehensively as the "forty thousand dollar car". $34,000 is a great deal, if I can score that, I'd be a happy camper!
Kikin 10-01-2005, 09:23 PM And you are complaining about $38,000 for a 7 pass. limited. I had to pay $47,000 for mine down here and it does not come with NAV system.
SubaruRules 10-01-2005, 11:08 PM Yeah, it is pretty slow.

One thing I neglected to mention is that my Tribeca didn't come with the NAV system or the DVD Entertainment system. It did howver, come with the Exterior paint protection and leather protection. I may have gotten a good deal because I chose to purchase a rather obscure color (Seafoam Green). Personally I love the color. I like it alot better than the black and silver models.
rottenWRX 10-10-2005, 11:43 AM its a chic car, just like the murano the bmw suv and all other small suv's

I do the same on my Non Sportshift Forester.. It seems the New 4EAT has a lag, but not when you drop a gear.
