Hi everybody,
Just got a few quick questions.

I had driven/owned two cars before and both of them are type I-4 engine.
I just purchase a band new 2001 RS a 3 months ago. Knowing the fact that Subaru Impreza is a Flat-4 and EVERYTIME I start up the car it gives a shake left and right as I am starting up my RS. Is this normal?? Am I the only one experiencing this or? I never own a Subaru before and my pass auto didn't do that when I start them up.

Last question,
From time to time... when I start up my RS.. it "Double" starts the engine in one key turn. What gives? I'm that if this repeatly happens that it can cause some major engine damage. I took it to service and they replace the Iginition AY (Which I have no idea what it is).. but the problem still stands. Anybody experiencing this incident? Any solution?

Go back to the salesman you bought the car from and ask to start some other cars on the lot and you decide.

Since they replaced an ignition part once already, and the problem still exists, take it back again before you break a gear teeth on the flywheel or the starter solenoid.

the "dance" is normal, the double start doesn't sound familiar.

Thanks Albert for the advice. I definitely plan to take it back to service again. However, the problem only comes from time to time. About 20% of the time~ It is kind of hard to show it to someone the problem if you know what I mean.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif

It happens to me and I always thought it was normal.

It's the "jiggie" that gets it going.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif It's like the 1st best thing that happens after you turn that key. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/cool.gif

I also have a 2001 RS. I get the dance, and I kinda like it! It feels like it's waking up to kick some butt. However, sometimes when it starts I get a "boom" sound. It's not real loud or anything but I have never heard that in any other car before. It is coming from the engine bay not the exhaust. Any ideas what that sound is? Is that normal for Scoobys?

I get a bit of a loud grumble when I first start. I think it has to do with the exhaust gases firing and pressurizing your piping. Kind of like a pop/burble/backfire. I think its normal. At least I never worried about it. I had it with my stock exhaust and my aftermarket exhaust. Stock was just quieter.

Boxer engines have the pistons facing out, instead of up like an I-4. The "dance" you get when you start up is perfectly logical if you think about it. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif And I-4 has balancing shafts to keep it from shaking out of the engine compartment, where a boxer engine's piston vibrations cancel each other out.

As for the double start, I think I've gotten that before on my WRX. I'm not too sure if it's normal. I'm just starting to find all the little quirks in scoobies myself. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

2001 2.5RS and 2002 WRX both have these little quirks from time to time... It just ignoring sometimes and can get you worry so much you know? After all, we just got our baby not too long ago so~~~

Okay, who else is victimize of this double disco standard deal?

you should feel the dance with sti mounts and lightened flywheel! it's like a lil' muscle car. you make the car 'dance' by stabbing the gas pedal too.

i dont understand what you mean by 'double start'. could you explain that more?

When you turn on your car with your key... as you make the rotation turn to start it up and release it in one second... The car starts it self and in a 1/4 of a second it starts again as you are in turning the key.

Question: Do you normally only turn the key for a second, no matter what? Or do you hold it until things are purring?

Edit: One other thing http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif When you do start it up, does it ever grind because of the double start? Grinding=bad

I think it's only happened once for me, and I'm not sure it's exactly the same thing. I had turned the key all the way, car started, and after I released the key the engine bogged for a second and revved up like normal.

Well, I turn the key all the way (Full turn) and hold until the car start... after the engine started... just release the key.

Imagine doing the same thing as above but as you are holding until it start, the engine is about to be on but then dies and come on again... then release the turning of the key.

This doesn't happen all the time, It only happens 15% of the time.

I'm not too sure if we had the same thing. I don't know what temps. you have in the mornings down in FL, but this morning in NE the temp. was about 45. I had to hold it a little longer before it turned over, but once it was running it stayed. I'm not a mechanic, so I'd be guessing as to what it would be. Mabye it's a fuel pressure issue? Any mechanics here that could help?

Aliasangel- If what you are describing DOES NOT include some grinding from the flywheel and starter gear. I'm pretty sure it is normal I get the same thing if it's been real cold and I don't give it a little gas while starting. It's almost like it is going to stall but the ECU says "oh no you don't" and keeps it running.

Again to reiterate, no grinding = probably OK.

It happen a few times during outside temp of 91 degrees.
