View Full Version : Moderators on the Vendor Thread
SubaruParts.com 08-24-2001, 05:46 PM Hey, great idea on this thread, but the moderators needs to keep their opinions to themselves and not change the main pages of the threads! I want to know why there are thumbs down on SubaruParts.com and SPT Tuning and a mad face on JC Sports when all three start their threads with a thumbs up! On top of that, SPT Tuning does not have one thumbs down on the entire thread! Please do not go back and change the thumbs to meet your views and opinions! These are the views of the members posting their own personal experiences! If I am wrong, please let me know!
Thanks,
C. Scott Williams

WagonMonster 08-24-2001, 06:17 PM yeah, I'm confused with the sudden Thumbs Down as well, especially considering that I've had positive experiences with both SubaruParts.com and Mike at SPD.
david2z4 08-24-2001, 07:12 PM Hmmm you are right the thumbs have changed.
North Ursalia 08-24-2001, 07:46 PM The moderators are not changing the icons on the threads... the moderators (well, me anyway) have been merging the threads to keep all the ideas about a particular vendor together... if there is a thumbs up, thumbs down, or whatever on the post, it is there because one of the threads it was merged with had it, and it was given by one of the people who started whichever threads were merged... I know, for myself anyway, that the icons are not being changed by the moderators. I don't control which one shows up, when threads are merged, as something just like this would result if I did. Be assured that if there is a thumbs down there, someone gave it ;). I can split the threads back up if you folks do not believe me.

North Ursalia 08-24-2001, 07:59 PM Ok, here's a "for instance." I merged 2 threads about Teague's Auto, one from Warp 3 and one from Gulio just now.
This is a screenshot of the first post of Warp3's thread:
http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/hosting/teagues2.jpg
It has a "thumbs up"
This is a screenshot of Gulio's post:
http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/hosting/teagues1.jpg
It has a "smiley face"
This is the merged thread, as listed presently in the forum list:

The thread got the thumbs up in this case. Why is there almost a "conspiracy theory" running around about the moderators? We really are not evil people doing the devil's work I swear... no blood letting ceremonies this week ;). I don't understand why a thumbs down on a post means a moderator did it... I merged your threads Scott, and I for one am very happy with you and have gotten quite a few items from you in the past...

david2z4 08-24-2001, 08:28 PM That's cool I guess. It should say at the top of these threads that it is a Merged thread so if things don't make sence we know the reason why.
edit: just checking to see if I can change the Icon.
Looks like the first poster can go back in and change it to the correct Icon they want.
the Dabbler 08-28-2001, 01:25 AM North:
Is there any way to rectify this? I ask because I started the thread on Mike Shields at SPD and I have had GREAT service from him. I come back to visit the thread, and find to my horror that a "thumbs down" has replaced my initial "thumbs up".
It may be a minor point to some, but the thumbs up/down is a powerful suggestion for someone who doesn't take time to read the mostly positive things said about a particular vendor (SPD, this case).
I realize this wasn't intentional, but can it be fixed? Perhaps the solution is to split the threads up again? I hate to suggest this and create even more work for the moderators (I, for one, really appreciate the work you guys do). But I think this is actually pretty important.
Very interesting North Ursalia, I guess we as moderatores will have to pay more attention to the posts we are merging until we can find a "fix" for this. Thanks for the heads-up Scott.
HRE | giulio 08-28-2001, 09:11 AM if there is mixed reviews... just make it the icon that i used here. notpad!
Hey look, i'm like... famous! moderators are quoting me
JGard 08-28-2001, 10:06 AM so, I guess what you are trying to say, is that just because we are moderators, we are not allowed to have an opinion?
i'm not a mod in this forum, so I can't change a damn thing, but you know what? I've had plenty of experience with Vendors and the like, and I feel it's only right to let people know what happened.
I don't generally post much of an opinion, rather, I post my experiences, and let people decide on their own.
I try to stay out of posts in this forum.
but if you screw me, then expect to hear about it.
I'm a member here too, just because I'm a mod.. does not mean I have to keep my negative experinces to myself.
as long as I adhere to the rules, and convey fact and not emotion.
then it's fine.
HRE | giulio 08-28-2001, 11:56 AM jgard, fishguy:
you totally missed the point. on a few threads, the icon was positive (in the forum's thread list). When merged with other threads, the icon changed to negative. or the other way around.
if negative and positive threads are merged, the icon should be neutral.
g
giulio - The problem is that we (moderators) cannot change the icon. Something in the code of vB changes the icon when a moderator merges two seperate threads into one. How vB decides which icon to use is unknown to us at this point.
North Ursalia 08-28-2001, 02:24 PM Actually, we can change it ;). I however feel it would be completely wrong to do. Why does the icon matter so much is what I'm getting at... say the merged thread has 30 replies but starts out with a thumbs down, and only 3 or 4 people express dissatisfaction with the vendor. Looks to me like one person didn't like their service and 26 people defended them. Flip the coin- one person starts a "bob's donut shop kicks arse" thread and 29 people villify that.... should I/we change the icon? Hell no. This is *not* a directed statement towards anyone, but I think that if people are just looking through here and going by icons on posts to decide who they deal business with, they need their heads examined, as well as the people who believe that there are people who do just that. The members of this board are FAR too intelligent to be swayed by an icon ;). Would you rather
A) have all the posts about one vendor in one spot so you can have all the info about one vendor in ONE place or
B) potentially miss the thread that says "I got ripped off by X vendor dont' do business with them"
You tell me which you think is better (rhetorical question BTW ;)).

Not that I feel directed upon, but I guess I need my head examined, because I'm thinking that there are people that look at the icons and take them at face value. Maybe you have more faith in people than I do. Getting cynical in my old age. :)
Hey North,
I think this got a little off-track here. Or at least, off track from what I was trying to say.
Let me restate. And again, this is not a flame on moderators. I don't think anyone here was saying moderators aren't entitled to opinions, or anything like that. Moderators are obviously people (and customers), too.
The point is, I made a post. My personal experience was positive, so I put a little thumbs-up icon there. I return to find that my thumbs-up (I consider it mine, since it's next to my name in the topic list), has turned to a thumbs-down. I realize this was not intentional. That's just what vB does when a thread was merged. I also realize that this means someone at some point created a thread with a thumbs down and that's where it came from. I'm all for that. I certainly want to hear about bad experiences as well as good. But the point is, my icon changed.
If it's going to change, can we do like someone suggested and just make them all Notepads or little imprezas or something neutral?
So, how about:
C) Have all the posts in one place. Change all topic list icons for merged threads to Notepads. All the info is in one place, no one has their icon (and by extension, a visual representation of their opinion) reversed, and no one misses any info.
I realize this is creating more work for you. And as I said before, I do appreciate the work you guys do. So whatever you decide to do, I understand it is your prerogative. Thanks for considering this request.
North Ursalia 08-28-2001, 09:03 PM Actually, that's really a damn good idea! I think I will adopt the http://www.i-club.com/forums/images/icons/icon2.gif arrow tag as most people don't use it and it does look like something is "moving" together ;). If it's done to all the merged threads, it's democratic ;). Doing that now... very good solution!

the Dabbler 08-28-2001, 09:16 PM Arrows are good! Thanks, North!
(And to giulio for the original suggestion)
david2z4 08-28-2001, 09:27 PM Sounds like a very good idea.
North Ursalia 08-28-2001, 09:31 PM Ok, check it out... arrows and "(merged thread)" ;).

Thanks for the great modification in the site.
All Moderators on this forum:
I apologize about accusing you of changing the thumbs and faces on the mail page. This was out of your control and I now realize this.
All the members on the I-Club:
I hope you have a nice day!

democracy in action. it was a beautiful thing.
North Ursalia 08-30-2001, 12:02 PM Jamie, because merging threads gives an arbitrary one or the other icon, and changing them per what I thought would be good just seems wrong, I went ahead and changed every merged thread to an arrow (can't be unfair if you do it to everybody :D) and changed the titles to "(merged thread)". I'm going to do that from now on to keep things sane ;).
