I have a question for those with swaps. To note, I am at the time to pursue a swap project.
Since all JDM vehicles do not contain a fully functional OBD system that is identical in working condition with its USDM counterparts, how does one go about CELs?
Do conventional code readers or Subaru dealership SelectMonitors able to read codes or access current data displays? Or does every just take a risk or do it the old fashion way with our 5 senses and a vacuum gauge. :D

for the 2001 Model Year japan adopted global ISO 9001 standards. This means any ISO 9001 code reader will read the codes. I have gotten nothing but conflicting information regarding these vehicles and passing the OBD-2 IM240 emissions testing. I am trying to find out thru a friend exactly what monitors the state is looking for when testing a vehicle.

Thats good info HT, thanks. I do agree on people passing emission testing that there are mixed outcomes of what works and what doesn't work. Even if the car is adopted to the ISO 9001 standard it may not mean the same for On-board Diagnostics.
But the more important question is if it is possible to read codes on those before the ISO 9001 standards? Such as a JDM swap from MY93-MY99. If I were to get a good engine, but comes out with problems in the long run, would I be able to check out what is going on?
Thanks again,

well all model years you can pull simple codes manually IIRC, if you connect the green diag connectors it will flash the check engine light. The hardest part would be knowing exactly what that code meant w/o some type of key.

Ah ok, that explains a big chunk of it.
Now I know the SelectMonitor can read the older Subarus that didn't have the OBDII port, such as the yellow/orange-ish connector thats on the right side underneath the drivers kick panel. Do you think that the SelectMonitor can tap in to that or would it need a different cartridge?
Thanks again!
