I’m in the process of investigating a DIY 2004 USDM STi 6 speed swap into a 2004 standard WRX. It appears that there are two different clutch part numbers for these two parts. Does the 6 speed have a different input shaft where the splines or needle bearing do not line up, or is the difference only due to the different flywheel and / or increased performance over the stock WRX clutch?
I’ve got a nice clutch setup for my (now trashed) 5 speed and would hate to spend (even more) money on a clutch that I might not need to buy.
Thanks.
yes you need a 6 speed flywheel and clutch ..
they are differnt
Ones for a 6spd and ones for a 5spd....
You want the logistics behind it? You can't use a 5spd clutch with a 6spd transmission.

Yes! Where did you get your data... or is this just something you pulled from another thread?
P.S. Upon further investigation, it appears that the clutch from my 5 speed WILL WORK JUST FINE infront of a 6 speed. I would quote my sources, but it appears that I don't need to around here.
Sorry, I've gone with what I've heard, stupid me. I admit fault. http://www.rs25.com/forums/images/smilies/zbanghead.gif
research indicates 5spd clutch will work with 6spd tranny. However you must use 5spd flywheel as well... Issues that arise with not using the 6spd clutch and flywheel with the 6spd tranny is loss of surface area and efficency.
Also, you may have to use the 5spd starter versus the 6spd starter.
Also, the swap is not backwards compatible. 6spd clutch/fly with 5spd tranny. The 6spd clutch/flywheel is about 1mm or so larger.

5 speed clutches WILL work with a 6 speed transmission, you can not use a 6 speed clutch with a 5 speed transmission.
The 6 speed clutch is larger diameter then the 5speed clutch.
there is no difference between the starter on a 6mt and the starter on the 5mt.
and yes i have done 6 of these swaps personally

People have run the 6mt clutch/flywheel in 5mt trannies also. Mikaust and Dug-E-Fresh are doing this. You have to machine out the bellhousing a bit. It's apparently not difficult and works quite well. I'd contact them to find out more information about it, as i have no first hand knowledge sorry. Good luck.
