View Full Version : New guy moving to phoenix and has a question
blackdout 10-12-2005, 07:22 AM Hello my name is mark and I will be living in the phoenix area in about two weeks. I come from way up north in Anchorage Alaska. I hope to meet a lot of you in AZ and very excited to have a awd dyno in the location. One question I do have is that my brother said that there is a high theft rate in Arizona and he said my car would get broken into. Is this true or is he trying to scare me? I have an alarm system and wheel locks on my rims but is it really that bad where I cant park my car outside of my house?
anyway thanks for looking and I hope to meet some of you soon.
MrDestructo 10-12-2005, 10:01 AM Yes, it is safe to park you car, but you must realize that AZ now has a car crime rate equal to or greater than Cali. Just keep in mind that things do happen to all makes and models around here, and if you search you will find several horror stories in this forum.
Things to keep in mind here (at least what I do):
1. If it doesn't look right, park somewhere else.
2. Don't park in areas next to freeways. That just makes it easier to get away.
3. Get a "Club". It is just one more obsticle to theft.
Just don't be freeked out about it. Enjoy our nice weather.

GReddy_Ready 10-12-2005, 11:19 AM My WRX lasted 4 whole days after I brought it to AZ from Cali. ~$18K in damage. Fully alarmed (actually the alarm is about all they didn't steal)
After living here for going on 25 years now I can tell you 1 thing you should never do. NEVER leave your car parked on the side of the road. Like if you run out of gas or something. Most cars left of the side of the road anytime after dark, will either be stolen or all your windows will be broken out at the very least. Doesn't matter if it is a Yugo or a Ferrari, it will happen.
On a better note, the weather is nicer here.LOL Welcome to AZ!! :)
shawnshekari 10-12-2005, 03:17 PM Welcome Mark! Hope to see you and the white suby at one of our meets or at the track.
bongchild 10-12-2005, 05:10 PM Welcome! Heh, I moved here from AK too! Faribanks, to be exact. U chose a great time to come down as the weather is PERFECT this time of year and u'll have all winter to brace for Hell, er summer.
shemoves 10-12-2005, 07:32 PM It depends on where you park. Your factory alarm is not that effective. I highly recommend an additional form of security. Also, keep your VIN covered as that is a method that can use to get your key copied. However, the best thing to do is to make sure you have good insurance with gap coverage.
pudnana 10-13-2005, 12:29 AM unless your car is a honda or a chevy blazer, you're probably pretty safe out here :P

Chevy blazer huh? I would of never thought. my girlfriend had one and good thing we got rid of it. It was giving us problems anyway.
HemiKLR 10-13-2005, 01:41 AM Hey General Malfunctions never have problems. It really depends what area you are in. We do have a high theft rate here but thats to be expected with one of the fastest growing cities in the US. It's just about being smart and using common sense. Like the whole never blast your stereo near your house. It's just like everywhere else, if they want your car, they're gonna get it.

Welcome... THEFT - IT ALL depends where in Phoenix metro area you're moving to... Scottsdale vs. Glendale - huge difference.
dust12 10-13-2005, 02:26 AM Welcome Mark. I moved from Anchorage to Phoenix around 16 years ago. I prefer the weather in Anchorage, but you did come at the best time of the year weather wise.
Anyways, your car should be fine, unless you park it in a bad section of town. If you have a detachable face stereo, make sure you detach it and take it with you whenever you leave the car. Also get tinted windows, and don't leave any valuables in site. Pretty much common sense stuff around here.

I hope you aren't saying scottsdale is better than glendale...I've lived in Peoria and glendale my entire life and I've had cars broken into twice. Once in Scottsdale (old town) and once in lot 59 at ASU. A couple of my friends have also had their cars broken into in Scottsdale.
In reality, it can happen anywhere in this city. I will say stay away from Metrocenter mall though...that has statistically one of the highest theft rates in the nation.
blackdout 10-13-2005, 02:31 PM To give you guys an idea of where I will be at I will be about 3 miles away from kingpin performance. And then I will live in the scottsdale area a couple months after.
dust12 10-13-2005, 08:17 PM your car should be safer in scottsdale.

Your best bet there is 3 miles straight east (ASU area  ), if it's 3 miles south, well....good luck with your car man, you'll need it.LOL Used to live in that neighborhood, between myself and my 3 roommates we lost 3 motorcycles out of our driveway in 6 months. We recovered 1 but the other 2 were never found.
