View Full Version : Air Care
5 Zigen 08-27-2001, 09:12 PM who here has done Air Care this year (2001) for their MY99 TS/RS/OBS???
just went thru it last Sat and they were extremely bad on the 4 wheel dyno....they can't keep up the speed w/ the computer and always go higher and lower and went out of range at least 4 times!!!
for the time being he always plays around w/ the gas pedal....that affects the result....it looks quite high although we passed....
anyone got their readings that they can post up?
I did mine on the 4wd setup in Richmond. They seemed to perform the test ok, but I could tell how sensitive the throttle is on our cars, or the torqu'iness at low rpm's. The car was bouncing a bit. My readings were very low. I'll post later tonight.
5 Zigen 08-27-2001, 09:29 PM haha
probably coz urs is 5MT....
the torque is good and once he has to accelerate tranny kicks down....there u go....then ooops....too high....slow down (tranny will helps to slow down too)....ooops....too low again....damn....haha....
so i saw him has a hard time keeping track....and at the last decelerating curve he just did it in no time....haha....didn't follow at all....probably the brake was too powerful....;)
Chris Chang 08-27-2001, 09:32 PM these are the readings for my rs
(HC): 0.0202 g/km
(CO): 0.1232 g/km
(NOx): 0.0241 g/km
my baby pass the test easily:)
5 Zigen 08-27-2001, 09:54 PM wow....is urs 5MT or 4AT Chris? stock or any mod?? and where did u go for air care?
the one we went is at Boundary and Charles....the technician was so sucky that if we fail i will protest the result to the manager and ask for a re-do!!! there is no way that he can play around w/ the gas like that....i am sure we will fail!!!
our reading is:
(HC) : 0.2099g/km while max allowance is 0.3700g/km
(CO) : 6.2548g/km while max allowance is 6.2100g/km (passed)
(NOx): 0.1895g/km while max allowance is 0.9300
i can't imagine how bad the result is....i am sure the exhaust and engine is all warmed up....geez....
Stock MY99
(HC): 0.0000 g/km max 0.3700
(CO): 0.1969 g/km max 6.2100
(NOx): 0.0033 g/km max 0.9300
Avenger 08-28-2001, 03:17 AM 5 Zigen: I noticed that your CO reading is higher than max.. but you still pass??
(CO) : 6.2548g/km while max allowance is 6.2100g/km (passed)
5 Zigen 08-28-2001, 03:32 AM yes....still passed....
u know how pissed off i was when i saw them trying to locate the OBDII connector? and when they can't follow the "curve"???
geez....they don't know how to drive....why don't they just use 2nd gear or sth and use throttle to adjust??? that's the highest reading i have ever seen on a MY99 car....geez....even my Civic i removed cat for a long while, put it back and go to air care there is no carbon or whatever built up in the exhaust or anything that will make it slightly higher....i passed way low at around 0....
geez....still so mad....they sure need more training....

oh well....as long as passed....i was surprised to see such a high reading passed....wow....

edit: like i said earlier....if we failed i will protest to the result to the manager and get them to give me a free fun and i will be the one driving!!!
just did oil change not too long ago and running 92....what if oil is dirty and using 87??? am i going to fail???
supaflyTS 08-28-2001, 03:35 AM i did mine in the begining of the year, just wondering, will you pass aircare if you have an exhaust with catback? just wondering...
5 Zigen 08-28-2001, 03:39 AM we have Apex-i N1 cat back....
i am bringing her car back to the shop to use our machine to test idle see if the apexi cat back or sparkco plug wires caused the problem....haha....
btw, i think where the problem is when they go to high speed (90km/h or 100???)....since he can't control speed i can see he goes up and down the line all the time....never seen techician do testing that unstable!!!
(always bring customer's car to air care center at work....so i have been to those places more than most of the others???)
Avenger 08-28-2001, 03:46 AM The way you said he was playing around with the gas pedal would bring your reading way off.. Even if you try it at your shop the reading will go high then back low because the computer can't compensate for the rapid change in a/f ratio. We once had a problem with a car passing aircare and the guy at aircare asked if we really wanted to get the car to pass..we said yes and he drove the car like crazy and it passed..
5 Zigen 08-28-2001, 03:54 AM not really crazy but must be steady....actually going slightly higher/lower now is not too much of a concern compare to back then? but if u are not steady....sensitive throttle response will cause air fuel ratio to keep changing and changing and it will eventually run pretty rich....and yeah....i probably won't notice that in the shop....still diff than dyno but i want to see what's the reading at idle and how bad if i rev couple times....
coz the machine we have i think is quite sensitive....those readings we got at the air care center usually is lower than what we got....so if let's say we have 20% gap to max the car will pass for sure....
anyways....it passed....hehe....just want to see others reading....the best is AT....want to see some AT readings....hehe...
Chris Chang 08-28-2001, 04:52 AM my car is a 4AT stock.
i did my test at Deerlake Parkway and Wayburne Dr. just beside BCIT. their service is not bad.
youthanasia 08-28-2001, 01:19 PM But it's 4EAT, I did mine last march, I can take a look later at the results for ya. . . :)
5 Zigen 08-28-2001, 06:34 PM Chris: wow....then shouldn't be the problem??? don't tell me it's the Apexi cat back or the plug wires....i got cat back when i went to air care w/ my Civic....just no header....and reading was way so low....
youthanasia: last March? March of 2000 or 2001??? 2000 has a diff standard i believe....and i don't think u need to do it for a MY99's car? i just did my first test this year....
youthanasia 08-28-2001, 07:41 PM March this year 5 Zigen . . .
Chris Chang 08-29-2001, 05:39 AM yah... i don't think the cat back or the wires will cause any problem too
next time bring ur car to burnaby for air care, maybe u will get different result
pm u for some other questions
death_blossom 08-29-2001, 08:10 AM Eric, did you goto do the AirCare for the RS at the BCIT aircare? u shouldn't have, becuz they are really dumb there!!!!
I had bad experience there b4, then I told my cousin not to go there, but he did just to see if they were that dumb and yup, they couldn't find some king of connector/sensor inside his car so they just bypassed that part.
I think it was the same persons that did both our cars, not to be racist or anything, but these stoopid CHA's need some education! how the heck did they get a job like that in the first place?!
sandy lam 08-29-2001, 06:20 PM I have a question, may seem to be quite stupid, but........ anyways....
i have a MY99, but I still haven't got the letter to go aircare yet, can I just go and do it now (since I am free now, no school), or do I need to wait until I get their letter??
thanks!
death_blossom 08-30-2001, 03:16 AM I think you can go anytime you want to. But DO NOT goto the BCIT aircare, just read my post above.
5 Zigen 08-30-2001, 03:21 AM i think there is a time limit....30days or 90days prior insurance due....
check www.aircare.ca or sth....hehe....forgot the site...
i got both mine and Joyce's done at Boundary at Charles (behind Mbenz)
Avenger 05-12-2002, 12:52 AM Went to aircare today and just barely passed. HC was at something like .32xx where the max was like .37xx Everything else was good. I suspect that idiot that was trying to drive it can't drive at all. It looks like he disengauged the clutch too quickly and it shook the car and I suspect it to bog the engine to get bad reading. Oh well I pass.. Now airecare is done my next step is to finish my turbo. I don't think it is possible to pass with a turbo at all with that type of max allowance. :( Guess my turbo will come off ever 2 years.
AllWheelDrift 05-12-2002, 12:53 AM My Audi 5ktq was aircared a few days ago and passed all the test with flying colours.

But they have higher limits. :p
Hojai 05-12-2002, 02:25 AM let say if i didn't pass aircare last time, do they have a record showing that my last test was failed?
if not i would really like to do it once with the turbo on and see how bad it is

They don't care what your past record is. You can keep trying until you pass.

Yeah, but the 10v Audi engines seem to run clean. Cleaner than the 5 cylinder 20v engines. I should check the numbers, because I wouldn't be surprised if they're still below the scoob maximums. ;)

Yes, they do keep records. But before they didn't seem to use the record for anything, not sure now. On the record it stats your reading, time you went there, which lane and place you went to and some other stuff. They were not to the public.

Well the thing with aircare now is that on 92+ vehicle they do a different test than the older vehicle. Before they just take a sample to see how it is like but for the newer vehicle they take everything. They collect the sample in a bag and separate them and record the volume, so the bigger the engine the more volume of exhaust that comes out.
Avenger 05-13-2002, 12:00 AM Hojai: What did they do about your OBD 2 connection? Since your using tec-2 there is no obd 2 connection, right?

Well, the port still exists. Probably if you plug in a OBD2 reader into the port, a whole bunch of CE codes will be thrown.
Did they plug into the OBD2 port during your Air scare?
I've gotta do mine this year. :( Oh well, don't have to worry about it till August.

Using Tec-2 I don't think the computer is plugged into the obd 2 port so it should be useless with no information comming from it.
Yes, they pluged it in before the testing.
You bought your vehcile after me? But you got nothing to worry about, if it fails just bring it back to subaru. :)
jackwei 05-13-2002, 12:55 PM actually, when I did mine last year MY99 5MT, one item seemed really high, but I can't remember which one...
oh well...

When did you buy your MY00? I bought mine in August 99.
We should collate various air-scare data and see how it pans out. My car has been running almost perfect. Only one CE light. Brought it back to the dealership, and they checked it out. No problems - Air Assist Solenoid CE light or something like that. Others have also had that CE light thrown with no actual problems.

What's up with that?
I bought my car in Aug. of 99 and had it insured. The following year (Aug 00), I had it insured again by the same company, but a few months later, I had to "change" my insurance since I was driving more than 15kms to work. Last year (Aug 01) I renewed my insurance again with the same people, and come this August 2002, I'll have to re-new my insurance again!
I did not receive any papers from ICBC or Air Care saying that I needed to aircare my car - yet. Guess I"m lucky! Saved myself $24 bucks! :D
