OZrally 10-22-2005, 10:50 AM Dose any one know if these will work on a 99 Legacy gt sedan?

Yes, and no they wont.

MitchGT 10-24-2005, 01:23 PM Can someone tell me if these are wagon-specific or if they will work on a BE too? I imagine the rear spring rates are high for the wagon but I just want to make sure.
iamrazor 10-24-2005, 02:32 PM Thats a smokin' deal. MitchGT, just get 'em ;)

They're as good as sold as soon as I confirm they'll work on my car.
iamrazor 10-24-2005, 03:16 PM I wish i had the extra cash right now. I'd already have bought them.
Rice & Gravy 10-24-2005, 03:20 PM Man, if the drop wasn't so pronounced I would get them!!!!!!
LetItSnow 10-24-2005, 04:09 PM They're awesome springs. Mix 'em up with GR-2's and you'll think you're in a different car.
MitchGT 10-24-2005, 04:11 PM This is killing me, I have my credit card in hand ready to buy these but I can't confirm ANYWHERE that they'll work for the sedan :furious:
subysouth 10-24-2005, 04:21 PM The H&R website is equally confusing.
Listing the only springs available as "wagon type" but then following that with "BE/BA". ????
They are sure they wont work on Outbacks though.

I know, that's what has been throwing me off  I'm thinking that it won't work and would cause the back end of my car to sit pretty high. But at the same time i find it odd that H&R would make springs for the 3rd gen wagon and not the sedan  Someone on here has to know the answer to this. Tora? :)
subysouth 10-24-2005, 04:33 PM Logic would suggest you would need different springs for the rear like you say. Subaru uses different springs for the rear oem.

MitchGT 10-24-2005, 04:41 PM I got H & R's number, I'm just going to call them in a few when I get out of work and ask them about it. If they fit I'm buying them as soon as I get home. I'll let you guys know what I find out.
iamrazor 10-24-2005, 04:49 PM wrx_driver_2002 sold a set to Staar a while back. Thats the P/N he had too. Both of them had sedans, so i'm guessing they'll work. I think you may need Impreza group N tophats though....

Already got 'em
MitchGT 10-24-2005, 05:45 PM Well the guy at H&R was no help: "I don't think they'll fit but I'm really not sure"
LetItSnow 10-24-2005, 07:15 PM To the best of my knowledge, the wagon and sedan springs are different. You will need Impreza tophats (they sit on top of the springs, if it helps clarify what you need to the parts man) for the front, although they don't really need to be Group N. I used the stockers, and they work fine.
wrx_driver_2002 10-24-2005, 07:54 PM They worked on Staar's sedan just fine (At least I think that's what she said). They weren't for my car at all. I've got a BD Legacy. THe only reason I had them s=is because they were left over from another customer who bought them for his BD, and they ended up sending springs for a BE/BH, which wouldn't work on his 1999 BD.
kevinsUBARU 10-24-2005, 08:02 PM you could always just buy them, then return them, and let me get them for my BH at an even more discounted price!!! ;)
MitchGT 10-27-2005, 12:58 PM Just an update on this. I spoke through email to subaruparts.com and they said they would fit but I would need to change out my front struts. I am assuming he meant strut mounts. Anyway, I'm going to buy them, if they don't work I'll sell them to one of the BH guys on here for more of a discount. Thanks for all the input guys.

I wish that made sense, but it doesnt AFAIK. Not what you wrote, but either option above. Cant see any reason for changing front mounts or tops for a BE versus BH. They use identical front struts unless I am mistaken.

MitchGT 10-27-2005, 04:26 PM ^^^^ Exactly what I was thinking. My only hope is that the a$$ end of my car isn't sitting up in the air. :)
LetItSnow 10-27-2005, 06:48 PM As above, you'll need Impreza spring toppers. They're something like $13 each at the dealer.

x4 or whatever we are up to
The BE and BH (USA) are not different but most of the springs come from overseas and the top hats, spring peach, or whatever you want to call it they use for the BH/BE (non-USA) are different there so they make them for that application. You will need Impreza tophats (just the crappy metal Chinaman hat looking thing) Like LIS said you can get them new for like 13 or at a yard for even less.
You will understand once you take your strut/spring assembly out.
Disclaimer: Now that I type up the whole USA/overseas story I am thinking I may be full of crap. But either way you need the Chinaman hat from an impreza.
MitchGT 10-27-2005, 07:57 PM bhall, the "chinaman hats" are only needed for the fronts correct?
bhall 10-27-2005, 09:14 PM Correct just the fronts the rears are the same. Once you get it all apart you will see what I am talking about.
If you are doing this your self a couple things to watch out for:
First make sure you break the top strut nut free before you get it out of the car. Not off just broken free, the 3 small bolts will hold it in place when in the car but out of the car you will have to squeeze it in between your legs or something. I used a pair of vise grips around a socket and put an allen wrench through the socket on the strut to keep the shaft from spinning.
Second make sure the cone shaped spacers that sit in between the strut and the tophat are like this / \ not this \ / other wise you will get a bunch of binding when turning. Don't ask me how I know about this one
Its much easier once you get in there.
MitchGT 10-27-2005, 10:01 PM Thanks for the tips bhall. I just ordered these so they should be here in the next week or so. I'm going to order some GR2s next week as well. Any other tips on the install are welcome!

First I've heard of it, but that makes sense I guess. May be different spring diameters for the Bilsteins?

Staar 10-28-2005, 05:40 PM wow all this confusion. i dono. mine went on fine and i didn't have to change any parts to fit them on my stock struts.
if they are the same springs i have (pn: 29443 va/ha) and they're going on a BE, there really shouldn't be a problem.
MitchGT 10-28-2005, 06:06 PM LOL, now you see why I've been asking you so many questions Staar?
