View Full Version : New Subie Owner 06 wrx
ncon315 10-22-2005, 05:01 AM Hey everyone I'm new to this site, I just bought a new 06 WRX tr (first subie)I went with this because they did not have any regular ones in the whole state. Figured not a big deal can mod myself with the saved cash. Anyway what are everyones opinions on the 06 WRX model.
ImprezaTron 10-22-2005, 08:23 PM I keep asking '06 owners how the transmission is but have never gotten an answer back. I hear you guys get synchro upgrades for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears just like the JDM model. The reason I ask is because getting into first at any speed above 5mph on '02-'05 models seems to be nearly impossible. Also I think a synchro upgrade is essential given how much stress AWD puts on the tranny.
BTW, welcome to the site and good luck with your new ride! :)
ncon315 10-23-2005, 04:12 AM I know that the new 06 wrx has been given a new tranny not sure exact specs but it is definitely stronger than the previous one in the 2.0 engines
ImprezaTron 10-23-2005, 08:04 AM So how does the tranny feel shifting into the first three gears and downshifting into first (at a reasonable speed)? I also understand that they changed the clutch to a push type system. The '06 tranny could be a nice swap for us EJ205 guys that don't want to fork out the cash for an STi 6spd.
MPREZYA 10-24-2005, 03:09 AM The tranny is like "butta" compared to previous models. It's definetly a step up but still not perfect. You can still get some resistance to get into reverse and 1st (which you should IMHO since there's no reason to really need to go into 1st at ~25mph) but it will do it much smoother though I don't personally do it. The tougher problem is getting used to the Electronic Throttle compared to the cable throttles on previous ones as it takes some getting used to for rev matching/heel toe/etc. I loved it when I initially drove the pre-production Legacy GT and still love it now along with all the improvements they've made compared to the previous models it truely is an entirely different car.
Chp_Stix 10-24-2005, 04:09 AM I have had my 06 for about 6 weeks (7000Km) and i down shift into 1st at about 50km/h nicely, i find i can drive it hard through 1,2,3 and it is nice. i have been happy with mine will start moding come spring so i am exctied.

ImprezaTron 10-24-2005, 06:03 AM Good stuff. The tranny does sound promising in terms of better feel and drivability. Though it probably will not fit the needs of drag racers looking for something that can handle numerous trips down the strip. Improved shifting feel and operation is what I am looking for in my car. I find it rediculous when first gear will put up a fight even when I am rolling around 1-2mph. I don't expect it to slide right in at 25mph without some perfect double-clutch work, but at any speed 10mph and under should be no problem. I also find myself slowing down my heel-toe into 2nd because the feel becomes really notchy, almost grind-like.
bluetwo 11-16-2005, 07:17 AM Good fawking buy mang. I hope she gives you plenty of grins and no trouble at all.
Keep us posted on how she performs as you put miles on the clock and get past the break in period. I'm sure a lot of people are curious.
jay3737 11-16-2005, 07:43 AM i have an '06 WRX TR that just hit 500 miles. i agree that first and reverse sometimes take a little more effort than the other gears but it's not too bad.
i have no complaints about the car so for (except the stock wheel gap!!!) but i plan to fix that soon...
oh, and although the tranny seems fine, it's light years behind my previous car (S2000) - that car's tranny was incredible. however, at least now i have some usable torque..

wimprezax06 11-30-2005, 01:38 AM hi, i just bought a o6 wrx, i hav like 900 miles on it now, n one day at night driving, i heard my bov went pshhhhhhh, n i was hella juiced XD i was tryin to make it louder by takin off the vaccum line n do somethin to it =\ but it didnt work lol xD i hav alot to learn about wrx, cuz i duno much about the subaru yet =]
under pressure 11-30-2005, 12:31 PM I have an o6_WRX i got last wednesday and have about 900 miles on it already  . It's far superior than any other car i have owned and i havent even shifted above 4K RPMS yes (trying to be dilligent about following break in) I have boosted, not sure if i made full boost or not (getting a De_Fi gauge set up installed asap.) But its a blast, the tranny feels really nice, i dont know if its just me, or b/c the car is brand new, or that its different from other cars i have driven, but 4 to 5 is not as smooth as far as the physical movement of the stick in and out of gear.
The handling and traction available is insane (minus the understeer, almost as bad as my S13  ) but i know FOR SURE, ill never buy a FWD car again, and probably not RWD either. AWD > all.
But for being a first time suby owner, i am very pleased. T-minus 127 miles till we can see what this car can really do.

ghostrr 11-30-2005, 03:27 PM   I just picked up 06 sti 3weeks a go, currently have about 1800 miles on it. I had to take it to dealer for alingment ,another 200+ miles later it's starting doing the samething which is pulling to the left and the sterling wheel is not stirght any body experince the same thing or It's just the awd cars commons problems ?????
