View Full Version : How do I replace '02 fog light?

(I really tried researching this issue, but came up with nothing)

I have an '02 WRX wagon. The right fog light burnt out and I want to replace it.

Can I just buy a bulb or do I have to get a whole new wiring harness (black thing to grey thing to silver thing that holds bulb)?

I'm assuming it's the whole harness cause I see people paying $50-$90 for replacements which seems out-f***ing-rageous just because a bulb burnt out.

Thanks,
Andrew

Don't worry, you can replace the bulb. Remove the light from the bumper (3 10mm bolts, make sure you don't touch the 4th one which is the adjuster), unplug the connector, turn the cap counterclockwise to access the bulb.
The bulbs are H3, and you should do them both at the same time both to keep the light output of the fogs equal and because if one burned out the other will soon. Be sure not to touch the bulbs with your fingers when you handle them, and if you do clean them off with alcohol.
The reason you see people buying replacement OEM fogs is usually because the glass lens got broken by a rock. That is NOT a replaceable part.

Mulder,

I've got the fog light off the car and unplugged from the car. It's actually right here next to my computer.

I pulled the bulb out of the shiny silver housing that was retained by the wire spring, but the bulb has two bare wires sticking out of it. It looks like the bulb was soldered in and I broke the wires. The bulb does not have any flat contacts to make an electrical connection.

Me confused.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Andrew

The new bulb should come with said wires that you broke off the original bulb.

It's been awhile but thats how I remember it.

If you go to the store and buy the replacement bulb, it should all come together.

The bulb and the shiny silver "housing" are supposed to be one part. You'll need to buy a new H3 bulb (or pair of bulbs). When you get the new bulbs it should be apparent what needs to be replaced. :)

Thanks for everyone's help! I replaced both bulbs and did NOT touch them. My lens was not broken because I invested EARLY on in those lens protectors. BTW, while waiting for my son to get out of his guitar lesson last night, I found the instructions in the user's manual. RTFM!

Thanks again,
Andrew
