i need to replace my04 headlights and want HID's, however, i have heard/read that there r better hid's than the stock STi headlights. i basically want the best lighting possible for around $1000 (+ or - $150). i've discovered that the stock usdm sti headlights r not projectors. besides not look as cool as projectors, r the sti headlights not very good hid's? would i be better off buying some mercedes projectors and retrofitting them or paying someone to install them into stock wrx housings? any suggestions or anything that i've missed? sti hid's r ~ $1100/pair while stock wrx headlights r ~$550/pair. projectors from where i've seen run around $300-$400 for mercedes oem's plus installation. any better sources and/or places that could help me out?

If you're willing to spend $1000 check out hidtech.com they can retrofit your headlamps with projector HIDs. The output is better than the STi HIDs from what I have seen.
