View Full Version : 05 hesitation under hard throttle
maxFy 11-12-2005, 11:41 AM Hello all, I've had an 05 wrx for over a year. Yesterday I did matched-revs down shift from 5th to 4th and nailed the throttle to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle. The car bogged HARD-seemed as if power went away completely, then came back on. Unfortuately I had lifted when this happened, so I don't know what would have happened if I stayed at WOT. Looked through the 2.0 l turbo thread about det., but I'm not sure if I have the same issue. Car seems to run weird at times. I rarely get on it that hard, or take it above 5k. Car is bone stock, 93 octane, ambient temp was ~40deg. Thanks for any help.

When exactly was the hesitation? If it was imediately after you release the clutch, it could've simply been the a combonation any number of things like:
turbo lag, hesitation of the computer, bad gas or something causing detonation... which in turn caused the computer to retard timing, your air filter needs replacement, your fuel filter is clogged or needs changing, etc, etc.
You see where I'm going with this? It's hard to diagnose a problems that includes so many factors. The first steps should always include making sure everything is maintained correctly. If that doesn't fix it, bring it somewhere where they can more acurately diagnose, like the dealership. You've got a waranty :)
Just one person's opinion.
maxFy 11-12-2005, 12:24 PM Thanks for the reply. Air filter is new, fuel filter is original, so perhaps that's a thought....The 'bog' did happen when I released the clutch, just felt very weird, scared the heck out of me. Almost as if the motjor just stopped for a second, then wound back up. hmmmm, bizzarre. Any other thoughts, comments?
kevin2.5rs 11-12-2005, 12:47 PM Its the stock EM
maxFy 11-12-2005, 12:58 PM Factory EM is what it felt like to me, if that makes any sense. Any stock fixes? Haven't approached the dealer yet.... Wondering if there is a factory reflash or some such thing. Thanks for the help guys.
timmah 11-12-2005, 04:36 PM nope, no factory fixes, they made it that way for a reason (emissions). reflash is your only option at this point really.
WRXVT 11-12-2005, 05:06 PM yeah this happened to me to for the first time last week. There is a thread somewhere on here that talks about this in detail. I just swing through the 4800-5300 rpm band to avoid it

above 5k is where all the fun is!
maxFy 11-12-2005, 05:39 PM I know, I should be winding this thing out a bit more....I guess I was thinking that the motor would last longer if I carried fewer revs, and know that I may have some sort of problem, I'm even less likely to do so-don't want to unload the motor due to det. or something...but I should be able to have fun with this thing, thats why I bought it.
its the OL/CL crossover. Em is the only way to fix it.

you should have fun with it. The way I see it, the motor will last 180k if you have fun with it (not abuse, but >5k whenever you want) and it will last 200k if you baby it. If you baby it too much you may wind up lugging the engine which is bad... and arguably worse than revving it up. In either case something will happen for me to get rid of the car before that point. It does sound like what you have is a normal stock EM characteristic.
RexyGirl 11-12-2005, 09:14 PM Did the check engine light come on after this happened? Does it still continue to drive like crap? How high did the RPM's go? It sounds like you could have put it into safe mode, due to the higher RPMS.
maxFy 11-12-2005, 09:32 PM No check light, I think the revs only climbed to ~5200, maybe 5500. Not high really, because I did lift when it bogged; just surprised me, so I jumped out of it.
Thinking of having the ecu flashed-a conservative tune if possible.
Thank you to everyone for their help

This
maxFy 11-13-2005, 12:01 PM Yeah, the Cobb thing sounds sweet; thanks for the link. I'd be interested in paying someone to upload a map as opposed to shelling out $600 for my own unit. I'm not interested in tuning the motor (I'm a suspension/chassis guy), just like a conservative map that addresses this issue. If there is anyone in the Rochester, NY area that does this, let me know.
timmah 11-13-2005, 12:45 PM MaxFy,
The way the accessport works, no one can just "upload" a map and let you use it. The accessport "marries" itself to your ECU.
AnorexicSTI 11-14-2005, 04:30 AM I have a similar problem with my 02 WRX. Coming out of a corner and accelerating, I get this in 2nd gear at roughly 6500 rpm, and 3rd gear at roughly 4500 rpm. It basically feels like the engine hits a brick wall, and then comes back 1s later. I noticed this started to happen after I installed an ACT clutch and flywheel, but wrote it off as coincidence. At first, it only happened once in a while, but recently it became worse... but then better again... go figure. I have roughly 75,000 kms on the car. I have not changed the fuel filter so that is what I was thinking. Air filter is clean.
Can the dealer fix this under warranty?

Of course, I should have known that, sorry for missing the obvious...I was under the influence of wishful thinking I guess.
WRXVT 11-14-2005, 10:17 AM I wonder if any damage is being done during that bog... it doesn't sound like it would be good for the drivetrain or existing EM
EagleRockWrex 12-03-2005, 01:56 PM I had the same problem yesterday, in 3rd getting on the freeway, let it loose to get around a slow car and I was waiting for my subie to really start moving, I had my neck braced and it never came, then right around 5200, it shot off like a bullett...... so strange, it was doing it all day till I came home, reset and took it out, runs fine now. 2.5 Catless TBE is my only mod.
What it boils down to is....I need an Access Port.....
