View Full Version : How much do foglights help in the fog?
turanuk 11-14-2005, 06:02 PM Simple question I guess...is it worth getting foglights on a 2.5i? Don't know if anybody goes to SFU, but it can get really foggy up there (to the point where headlights aren't useful) when it rains. Is it worth the cost for foglights/do they improve visibility significantly in those conditions?
If foglights are worth it, anybody know where to get some for an 06? Don Docksteader quoted me 600 something for the kit + 150 for the bezels. I could just buy them in the states ($300 US for everything) but I'm curious if any local shops would have them in for cheaper.
Finally, if I were to get foglights, is the install difficult/do I need any special tools?
Thanks in advance.
buster 11-14-2005, 07:33 PM You could get PIAA's for less than that with nice yellow bulbs for crap weather. Or, you can bend over and get taken from DD....sorry I hate them.
Yes the yellow fog lights do wonder in crappy weather, better than HID.
turanuk 11-14-2005, 08:56 PM so you're saying I should grab the foglight assembly from the US and switch the bulbs?
buster 11-14-2005, 09:01 PM Yep...
turanuk 11-14-2005, 09:52 PM do you have any links to ones that might be compatible with the 06? I only see stuff for the 05's, and the lamps look rather big. Can anybody rate the 06 foglights on their wrx or give an opinion on how they might compare? thanks again.
jonney_boy 11-14-2005, 09:59 PM I have a 03 ts (bug eye) with fogs and they are very usefull when I head up to SFU. The fog lights can cut through the fogs much better than the headlights can. In the pouring rain they also help greatly by lighting up all lane markers.
The new 2.5i uses projector fogs and i'm not sure how different they are to my "huge" reflector fogs...... projector = more efficient.... reflector = bigger.. LOL
turanuk 11-14-2005, 10:01 PM lol are yours stock/dealer installed?
jonney_boy 11-14-2005, 10:05 PM yes there where... part of a "package deal" at DD when I purchased the car. The fogs where $300-350 installed back then if purchased seperately.
With the price of the fogs being sooo expensive ($600), I personally would be tempted to either buy the kit from the states, or just purchase the surrounds and a set of piaa. they are prob of better quality than the dealer installed fogs and still come out a "tad" cheaper.
turanuk 11-14-2005, 10:12 PM yeah thanks for the advice guys. piaa makes bulbs and lamps, are you referring to the full lamps or just the bulbs? Like you can open up the stock foglight and stick in a yellow piaa bulb instead right?
jonney_boy 11-14-2005, 10:15 PM I was refering to the lamp.
I figure, $100 for the surround + $300 for the piaa lamps < $600 for OEM setup.
Also, imho the piaa lamps are better quality than the OEM lamps.... this is only if you don't mind spending a day "making them fit" tho.
The easier route would be to just buy the oem lamps from the states. If they are anything like the previous subaru's it should already be pre-wired and just plug and play. $300 + tax + exchange < $600
turanuk 11-14-2005, 10:21 PM is there any chance of me screwing up my electrical system? Don Docksteader seemed to imply that if I developed electrical problems after the install they wouldn't do electrical warranty work, but I'm starting to get the sense that their service department is full of crap (and only after 3000km and a free 1500km inspection....that's a bad sign lol).
Also, another quick question, what about the switch? How does subaru traditionally do foglight switches?
buster 11-14-2005, 10:46 PM ahhh, good old DD...tell them to stuff it up their ass. There isn't anything in a properly installed PIAA system that isn't in the stock setup. In fact your probably better off as the monkeys they use for techs at DD will probably screw things up for you. And I ain't joking.

turanuk 11-15-2005, 05:53 PM i've decided to go with the stock foglights from the US. How hard is the install? The US shop quoted me $114 US to put them in, but DD only wants
$64 canadian to do the job (US shop claims it's a good 2 hour job). Has anybody done it and knows the steps involved/how long it would take? Thanks!
