I was just driving home 15 minutes ago from my gf's house, I was going about 60~70 down David where it has little street lights. All of a sudden I see something on the other side of the lane and by the time I could see it, it was right infront of me already and it was an adult deer. I braked soooo hard and maneuvered to the other lane with the ABS on, I was about half a meter away from hitting that thing. Good that I wasn't going any faster or else I don't think the Brembos could've saved my butt.

same thing happened to me a while back going around UVic, a deer just bolted through the trees by the road in front of my car.. slammed on the brakes while swerving, came pretty darn close

then a couple weeks ago a squirrel decided to go suicidal.. I was going 40 around UVic again but I clearly saw the squirrel running towards the road from a distance, started thinking "he'll stop...he'll stop... he's not gonna stop.." so I just came to a stop and the thing goes flying underneath my car and across the street... crazy little guy

Okay so this is about 6yrs ago, I'd been up all night partying with some goons in Metchosin and the house was a 10-15min walk to this wicked shake/burger take-out. I had about 4-5 hrs of sleep, my host had even less, I was the only person to hang out to help clean, and he was paranoid about how messy his place was. Anwyas so I insisted we get back into some of the leftovers from last night, and soon enough we're wasted and like 10mins late for our take-out.

Now we're responsible. We were too hungover to drive in the first place, realizing we're late we're not going to make things worse by driving after re-'hash'ing the previous night's events. So we're walking along (we called in and explained very carefully not to throw our food out), and there's this late summer splendor thing going on. The trees are all in full bloom, the flowers are all as good as they will look, butterflies and birds take to the skies, and everything is like a movie set perfect.

At this point I notice a family of deer, to fawns and a mom.. I point them out to my friend and tell him that it would be just our luck that the deer would run out into traffic to add to our already nasty trek. Just then the two fawns perk up, look around, freak out, and come running towards us! As they get closer they saw us walking and verred off, sprinting right into the road! The fawns were nowhere near the cars, they made it across easy. Mom on the other hand was spazing like she didn't know what the heck to do. She ran away from us and then turned around looked for the kids, then went straight for the road and there's the big old station wagon comming along.

Well you can guess the rest. The lady driving the station wagon was LOSING IT! She had 3 kids in the back, 2 girls and 1 boy. The boy wanted to get out and look, the 2 girls were totally histerical, screaming themselves silly.

Now outta nowhere, there's a cop on the scene! I guess he was in traffic or whatever, he's telling the lady to put her car in reverse and back up. So she revs it up and pops it into gear (totally mentally unfit to drive and almost slams into the mess behind her! At the same time the mom deer just pops up like a boxer that's standing up when they should of stayed down. She sprints across the road like nothing just happened!

We're hungry, that's a cop, we're amazed but not about to stick around. Off we go to claim our meals. About 2-3 minutes later we hear a gun shot, then 2 more following. We found nobody there on the way back and never heard anything. We assume the mom deer may of been too injured and the police officer shot it 3 times(bad aim?) or he shot the mom, plus the 2 orphans?! I guess it could of been some backfires on a crappy car, but either way it makes you wonder?!

yeah the deer saw me from far away but he probably thought he could be able to cross the road before my car comes. He probably got a bad sense of speed and timing lol... the only thing in my mind when I saw it was "NO NOT MY CAR! NOT MY LIP NOT MY WINDSHIELD!!!!"
I was shivering while I was driving home, never been that close to an accident like before, I usually see those wildanimals far away but the road was so dark without any street lights. Good that my HID caught it or else things would be different.

Just go to canadian tire and get those whistles that will scare off the deer before you get there.. The trick is mounting them someplace where they get the same direction/amount of air flow as a hood mount, without leaving them easilly visible?

I heard stupid people were sticking those inside the car where they can't be heard, under the hood where they can't get air, etc, and then saying they don't work when they hit a deer. No really.

You could stick them on the underside of the hood scoop and it would look like nostrils! :)

hahah, nostrils!

anyways, i used to have these one of my other cars, and they were mounted on the bumper with tons of air, and i saw no difference in the amount of deer i saw (atleast 2 a week).

Well more and more deers are running around the roads now because they can't find any food in the forest due to the construction building. How will those whistle sound? Never knew how they work, so air flows into the whistle and makes a sound that will scare deers away? That means we can hear it too? hahaha

similar thing happened to me about a month ago, but it was in richmond and it was an unleashed adult German shepherd!

i was driving on no. 3 road in the inner lane.
then out of no where this german shepherd jumped off the side walk
both my car and the car beside (outter lane) slamed on the brake
the other car nearly missed the dog but i didn't.
there's upcoming traffic so i can't swerve to the opposite lane, and i hit the dog w/ my right front corner with a speed around 20-30km/h. (when i hit him he was standing in my lane, and half of my car is on the central double yellow line already). everybody at the scene came to a full stop, including the cars on the opposite lane. I was afraid that I might roll him over!! luckly i didnt. but it was still terrifying! hearing this bang sound and the whining from the dog.

so i got off the car to see how is the dog, and before i even got off the car the dog ran off and is already one block away from me. (animals are just amazing eh...)

i checked my car and the support on the right corner light is broken, the corner light is hanging there by the light chord. and there's a little dent on the fender.

fortunately, there was a police car on the up coming traffic, she saw this and turend around to help catch the dog.

to my surprise, the owner of the dog didn't even come to apologize to me, let along paying the damage to the car, and the cop said nothing about it either.
i really hope dog owner could be a little bit more responsible.

I saw a similar incident in Richmond as well. Longer than a month ago though, it was on that road ... I think Alexander? I don't know the name, but the street you are on once you get off HWY 91. Anyways, I only saw the aftermath. Saw the traffic all packed, the cars aren't moving. Saw the dog on the ground with blood.
Does anyone know what happened??

I had one shaddy story too... one night I was going to go out, opened my front door, I was walking to my car and I stopped when I saw what I thought to be a dog, it looked at me and didnt bark so I lighted up my LED flash light and I couldnt believe I saw a big cat, I dont know what it is... wolf? its not a dog for sure... I ran back inside and never came out at mid-night.

The other day, in the morning, the tenant in my basement called us upstairs, she saw a bear hanging out at our back-yard. It was gone when I came out to the balcony with my camera

Bear just love my backyard, I saw the same two bears(mother and son) hanging out at my backyard 4-5 times this years already. They like climbed into my backyard first, then climb to the next door. My dog just keep barking at them at the sundeck. Fortunately, they don't know how to climb up to the sundeck. :p

One time I saw a bear(i believe that was the son bear) looked inside the backyard from the outside of the fence while I was dog walking, and it was only around 30m away from me. At first I dont realize that was the bear. I throught some kid climb up the fence and try to look at something, but it was during the summer time and I didn't think people would keep dressing black long sleeve shirt amd pant under 30C. And my dog was keep barking, and trying to get closer to the bear. I was like "Oh my god, Don't look over here please Little Bear". :furious: Then the bear just walked back to forrest slowly.

oh man now days the bears and all those wild animals are running around the houses... I used to see bears all the time in my backyard before I moved. Gotta becareful with your dog, I think thats how I lost my cat because my parents put her outside. Whats even more crazy is, when I saw that bear in my backyard, a neighbour of ours had their garage open... I hope the bear didn't decide to pay them a visit  ^^^^^^

I've been on hikes and come across bear before. Ususally they smell you and bugger off before you can get close but I happened to be down wind from a brown bear once and it was in a hilly spot. Actually I was just coming over the crest of a hill as I heard something and stopped dead in my tracks. Not more than 20 feet from me was a brown bear, also stopped dead in his tracks. The bear reared up a little bit, pawed the air and sniffed, then made a pained grunt sound as he/she turned around and trotted off in the opposite direction.

So I pulled my keys out and tied them to my belt so they hit my leg and made a metal sound. Bears and other predators don't hang out around wierd metal sounds, they tend to split when they hear something like that.

I wonder if bears stay away from wind chimes? Couldn't hurt?

She should make her own brand of bear spray. It would fit right in with her marketing.. A little bit of french, a whole lot of stench..
