Let me preface by saying that the dealership is taking good care of me, no complaints there. Also, this car is anything but abused... Pampered is more like it.

For about 10,000 miles I fought a coolant loss problem on my '02 OBS. 3 sets of head gaskets and 2 timing belt tensioners later, SOA recommended replacement of the short block. Sure enough, when the block was pulled, there was evidence of lots of coolant blowing through the #1 cylinder wall and also the #4 cylinder was so ovalized you could see it from 3 ft away w/ the naked eye. POS...

Got the short block replaced. Had to correctly route the accelerator cable and clamp some hoses coz the dealer wanted to get it back to me asap, but it wasn't a big deal.

1000 miles later, big oil puddles under the engine. Head gasket leaking on passenger side. New gaskets. Clean garage floor.

1500 miles later, bottom of the car looks like the Exxon Valdez after it ran aground in Alaska and broke up on the rocks, oil frickin' everywhere. Coolant almost gone too. Grrrrrr...  Put protective cover on garage floor temporarily.

Back to the dealer. Oil pump mounting flange not machined correctly and the rt side head is leaking oil again. God only knows where the coolant is going. Needs another short block, this one is tits up. Waiting on one from SOA, maybe from Japan.

This just in: the transaxle and driveshaft is making noises. 46,000 miles on it. Dealer serviced all the way. Might be my last Suby.

Now, having said all of this, I feel better. Thanks for listening.

Added on 1/11/06:

Well, the dealer replaced the short block again. I now have 3K miles on the new short block and guess what? No power. Crappy gas mileage. Losing oil. And... STILL LOSING FRICKIN' COOLANT.

Took it back. Can't find one thing wrong with it. Sheesh. This is absolutely disgusting out of a Subaru. Asked what my options were of Subaru customer service, and the answer is pretty much "We'll give you top $ for you car on a trade in."

Going tomorrow to ck out a laser red '01 Audi 1.8T A4, loaded with 69K miles on it. I had Audis before (A6, 90S, S4), and they never screwed up as bad as this. The dealer made me a nice deal on the Audi, ended up being $30/month less than my Suby for 1 year longer than I owe on it, and replaced the water pump and timing belt in the deal.

Do like we do in the Army. Toss a frag into the engine bay, yell "FIRE IN THE HOLE!", and run like hell to the dealer for a new one on their dime

As much smoke as it's generating as the oil pours over the exhaust, it looks like a "technical" in Afghanistan that just took a round from a Barrett sniper rifle thru the engine.

Hey! There's an idea...

AND... I see that the moderator moved my thread to the SOA and Warranty sub-group even though this is neither a complaint about a warranty nor about SOA. Get a D- in reading there, guy?

this is still going on from the original diagnosis. I think its time you called lemon on it and ask SOA for a new car.
