View Full Version : Coil pack resistance readings

I have 2 OEM coil packs for my '97 2.5GT. I bought a replacement a few years back when I first started having misfire problems. The coil turned out to not be the problem, so I have two "good" coil packs.

My Haynes Manual gives a quick procedure for testing the primary and secondary resistance to see if the coil pack is healthy. As I was replacing my plug wires this evening I went ahead and tested both coils. According to the Haynes Manual the spec for the primary coil resistance is 0.62 - 0.76ohms, but I don't have the ignition system portion of the FSM so I can't see what Subaru says it's supposed to be. (Anyone know?) Both coil packs steady out at 0.8-0.9ohms, so a bit high out of spec. Secondary coil resistance is right in the middle of the band, so no worries there.

I'm just wondering if it's more likely that the Haynes Manual spec is a bit off, or if both the coil packs I have are bad? I'd hate to spend $$$ to "fix" the problem by buying another coil just to find it shows the same numbers.

FSM says 0.73 +/- 10% so you are fine. At that low of a resistance the quality of your meter comes into question for such small errors anyway.

Thanks, Rob, that's reassuring. I figured multimeter accuracy isn't perfect, too.

Patrick - I saw the same variations for my 02 rs. Not sure what the exact numbers were. But i was able to head into the dealership and they let me test a new coil with my multimeter. Turns out i got the same readings.

WOW
My Technicians reference booklet states that the resistance between Ignition terminals 1 and 2 should be between 12-14K Ohms.
Maybe we read the Ohms differently  Imperial Ohms versus Metric
Go figure, isn't that wierd?

That's not weird at all. What you're referring to is the secondary coil resistance, while Pat LI, Rob and I are talking about primary coil resistance. Two completely different specs.
