View Full Version : So, I Suck at Driving
Perpetual Burn 11-17-2005, 01:13 AM Well, like I mentioned I would before... I took my TR out to the local drag strip to see what it could do stock. This was my first time ever driving at a strip... and it shows.
First run, I went up against a Mini Van rolling like 6 deep, just some dudes messing around. I lined up first and then I watched the van get set... for too long. When I look up at the tree the light turns green... doh. So, I take off with no launch, and get a 1.973 R/T.
2.502 60'
15.660 1/4
90.86 MPH
Well, I figured I had to do better than that on my second run... and I did, but nothing impressive. This time I launch at 4500 and slip the clutch to keep the RPMs up...
.585 R/T
2.235 60'
15.117 1/4
92.57 MPH
Well, I decide to launch a little lower on my third run... 3500.
.410 R/T
2.235 60'
14.979
92.76
That run was the only run that I shifted into 4th before hitting the trap... the first run I got it up to like 7000, and 7500 on the second. I dunno if shifting helped me or hurt me, but I felt like I accelerated harder after I shifted.
So, there you have it... the '06 WRXs are slow. :D Or I suck... take your pic. I think it's mostly in the 60'... which I'm sure I can improve. I just need to practice.
No flame 2 hard plz,
Justin
HalfBaked 11-17-2005, 01:22 AM The r/t doesn't have anything to do with your 1/4 mile time...and work on that 60' you'd really reduce that 1/4 time!
If you get that into the 1.8s you'd run low 14s!
99subi 11-17-2005, 01:30 AM hey its your first time its all good
WoohooRX 11-17-2005, 01:31 AM Wasn't there some post that claimed the 06's ran 13's??
I figured with the inc. hp/tq should'nt it be in the high 13's? 13.8/13.9 etc.
Good job, that's not bad for your first time. I haven't gone yet, but I'm sure I'm not going to get lower than 15.
Perpetual Burn 11-17-2005, 01:34 AM Yeah, I was really hoping for sub-14s... but not with 60's like that. I'm gonna practice launching whenever I can... and hopefully I can go back next Wednesday or sometime soon and do better.
CalcVictim 11-17-2005, 01:37 AM don't worry about it, my first run at the track I ran a 16.2---> later that night my best was a 14.79 at 94.7 with a 2.00 60 foot time. This is on a tbe+uppipe bugeye.
White 2.5rs 11-17-2005, 01:47 AM they allowed your oponent to have passengers in the car???
Perpetual Burn 11-17-2005, 01:54 AM Oh yeah.
Pastapuck 11-17-2005, 02:15 AM Was the strip at a high altitude?
Turbo20VJetta 11-17-2005, 07:24 AM Ah, my first and only run in my 9-2 wasn't much better...
14.8 at 92 with a 2.18 60ft time.

Nope, Florida... and about 75 degrees out; no excuses there.
PHATsuby 11-17-2005, 08:37 AM i would say launch at a higher rpm too, are you bogging at all? Once you hook up at that low of an rpm it will probably drop you out of boost range for a bit.
Or, you could try the neversatisfied approach and use the rev limiter as launch control:lol:

If you knocked 4 tenths of a second off the '60, you'd probably chop upwards of half a second from your 1/4 mile ET. The other thing that will hurt is shifting speed -- shift like a grandma, get times like a grandma :). Truth be told, you really have to be unafraid of breaking your car and drive it like you stole it if you want ultimate times. Most people don't want to do that..

Davenow 11-17-2005, 09:07 AM Hell man I ran 14.0 in my STI the first couple runs, and I have a little bit of drag experience. So dont sweat it.
any reson why you rev it out till 7500? isn't the redine at 6500 in the 06?
Freon 11-17-2005, 09:55 AM You'll get there. When the light goes green, floor the gas and try to slip the clutch to hold 3000rpm or higher.
I'd shift at 6500 in 1st and 6000 in every other gear as a starting point. I believe the '06 2.5L WRX has the same turbo as the old 2.0L, so it is probably choking hard at higher RPM.

yea it claimed like 13.5 or something dumb
mycal 11-17-2005, 10:07 AM Most of the Flat4 crew in 02-05 wrx's are in the 14's modified to stage 4 and 15 with stock turbo. A few stage 4's get high 13's. My bugeye's best on a stage 2 TXS was a 13.8. Most of these guys race at least every other event. This is in Las Vegas at LVMS, so there is some altitude and temp/humidity difference. But not bad for the first time out. :)

Damn you have some sucky drivers in your area.... 14's on stage 4 thats horrible.  :furious:

That's only in 3rd because I don't want to lose time by shifting into 4th right before the end... usually I shift at 5500-6000.

yup, on the street, it feels faster shifting around 5500-6000 vs redlining
Chiketkd 11-17-2005, 03:33 PM Hey, as long as you had fun and didn't break your car, I'd say the night was a success! :)
Practice launching on an empty street on the weekends. When you get the hang of things, go back for more. My friend in his 5MT '05 LGT can cut 1.9 60ft's with an 'easy' 3,500-4,000rpm launch.
drdome99 11-17-2005, 05:15 PM yup, on the street, it feels faster shifting around 5500-6000 vs redlining
See I understand the reasoning behind this, as the power drops off after 6000, but at the same time wouldn't it make more sense to run it to red line so then when you shift you aren't dropping to a lower rpm and bogging the car somewhat?
Every time I try to compare the 2 ways at the track I either f up my shifting or launch on the back to back runs.
don't worry about it, my first run at the track I ran a 16.2---> later that night my best was a 14.79 at 94.7 with a 2.00 60 foot time. This is on a tbe+uppipe bugeye.
I also ran a 16 second 1/4 my first time out, and I had to endure the mass burn my buddies with Hondas threw at me. I ran a 14.3 shortly after that, and haven't been back yet. All times were stock bugeye WRX with an axle back muffler.
michaeldover 11-18-2005, 12:43 AM I have a 2006 WRX My track day expiernce wasnt to bad.

Probably not worth runnig 100 octane with no real mods. You should be very safe without it...Never hurts though I guess...
wrxwhat 11-18-2005, 01:02 AM haha you crashed your car with 32 miles and lost to a stock honda!!!!!!!!!!!!!

don't say the car is slow YOU SUCK! keep practicing.
I drove my 06 against a scion tc i shifted slowly cuz I thought i would just have fun with the car, the car kept up with me. I won by 1 car difference only. the second time i did shift correctly and pushed the car cuz my friend from the tc was saying my car was slow and this time i could barely see him in my rear view mirror  it was like a 10+ car difference. yeah i know i shouldn't be racing scions! its just a good example.
"Its the INDIAN not the BOW"

Budd told me to say it ;)
Perpetual Burn 11-18-2005, 12:47 PM Well, Budd needs a life.
wrxwhat 11-18-2005, 01:34 PM How do you lose to a stock civic though? :(
Perpetual Burn 11-18-2005, 08:28 PM I hardly call a motor swap stock... with AT LEAST an intake, header, and exhaust, performance suspension, and probably tuned ecu... and who knows what else, since his cousin thought he'd sound way cooler not saying what mods they've done.
PLUS, his cousin sat in my car along with my 300+ pound friend... vs a 2700 lb gutted civic.
And of course it was from a roll, where all wheel drive doesn't matter... and he still never pulled more than a car length away. And I never shifted higher than 5000 since I was still kind of trying to break in my engine... while the little VTECer was RAPING his tranny. I asked him if he wanted to go somewhere where we could let everyone else out of our cars and start from a standstill... but he decided to think that he conquered the world by beating one WRX from a roll a few times, and just went home.
So, there's the story about me losing to a "stock" Civic.
So, get outta here with your fake sad face and go tell Beau to stop being such a hater.
js3324 11-18-2005, 08:32 PM Atleast you can probably do steep hills, I cringe when people are behind me in my STi and even thinking about telling them to get off my ass - damn its scary(thats how much more I suck compared to you) Getting used to the clutch, 60 miles...its a bit harder to master than my friend's bmw325.
If i went to run, I would pull a 17 on a 13 second STi, lol.
